View Full Version : How about some motard riders in Auckland?

Any around? I've seen at least a couple in my travels around the shore but admittedly don't notice too many about. Would be keen to try and get some tips or learn some sweet skills. Currently I take corners way slower on the drz than I did my gn! embarrassing...

try to behave round town. not really the place to go stupid. since fitting this new carb I have noticed a tenancy to pop wheels tho. I prefer to find twisty b roads and push it along a tad. I'm enjoying not looking at the Speedo every few seconds as was the case with the vfr. a few of the welly riders know that the vfr goes ok but it likes to cruise at 120~140 which was alright in the 90s but not cool now. You will know my bike as it is not pretty :shifty:

hell no. have better things to do than polish a bike. Not like I can see what it looks like when Im riding it. As it is I get lots of stares on this. People possibly thinking "wtf??". More important to me is how it runs/handles :D

Ooo she's beautiful. Gone out for a decent ride this weekend? Getting more confident? Apart from riding down to Taupo on Thu night, track day on Friday and riding back on Friday night I haven't done anything else as I've had the kids this weekend. Will really take some getting used to though as I was way fucking quicker around corners on the freaking GN, this is the wierdest feeling ever on this bike. Also my upshifting is retarded and don't get me started on my down shifting LOL.

very nice ride there. muffler looks like it might be a bit more free flow than stock :D
how did the track day go ?? and what are the seats like on the 400sm long distance ? 650's are notorious for having the same comfort levels as a peanut butter sandwhich on a plank :/

Yea not sure what other drz's sound like but love her sound for sure.. especially when she pops in down shifting... Track day was total arse, I just wasn't enough used to the bike and the track was wet for the better part of the day so new bike + unfavourable weather = me very nervous. I swear I was much faster around corners on the gn. Never mind, I will get there! Yea I can confirm the seat isn't that great, I had a sore lower back when I got back to Auckland that's for sure but I guess the bonus is you can stand up on the pegs and stretch your legs although I guess it probably looks weird to people in their cars. It's not the seat that concerned me though it was the wind coming off huge trucks if I was riding directly behind one, it literally shook me around, pretty scary at some points.

Apparently the seat on my DR-Z was made by "McDonald motor Trimmers" (http://www.trimit.co.nz/) and VERY comfy it is too!
DR Trim (http://www.drtrim.co.nz) in Morrinsville do really nice work as well, went with a mate of mine there to get his CB250 redone, took 2 hours looked great!

Does you partner work at Colemans ? I was talking with the sales guy there on friday when my bike was being done he mentioned his partner was going to a track day that day ... he saw the seat on my bike and commented on it :-)

Your tyres are directional. Meaning that they are designed to rotate in a certain direction. There will be an arrow marked on the sidewall that will indicate correct rotation.
After a google search I think they are mounted correctly. Just looked a bit unusual to me.

you would think the motard would be a much more popular style to ride, so much fun at every turn, every little bump, jump, hump, traffic island, all little ramps to launch from.... red light queues? traffic jams? effortless on the motard, very cheap on gas, costs me 13cents per km for gas. not to mention alleyways, parks, carparks, however, im not a huge fan of a lonnng ride though.

Even though it only had a fraction of the power, I still love my little tard. Ideal bike at the moment would be a 990smt. Or a dorsoduro. Or a hypermotard (yea that's not really a motard but I sat on one and it's so comfy). Tards are perfect for everything except touring. But still better tourers than sportsbikes.

Sort of why I went with a dr tard and not the highly strung performance beasts out there. I can do long distance on mine. Gravel roads with road tyres are good fun too.
More comfortable than the vfr (which Ive ridden to welly from the Bay of islands in one day rides over 60 times).
Chock chasers for the win :D
still have the vfr tho. Hard to let go of a bike that yourv had for 20yrs and still starts first pop :/

I *might* go out for a ride on the beach on Sunday, have to check with a friend (leathel) first. Would be fun to learn how to wheelie if I can and the sand is certainly softer than the road... I am riding down to Hampton Downs in the morning and then possibly going on a ride with a (non-motard) friend on Saturday afternoon if any one is keen?

Iam in Australia at the mo.... took out a suzzi 1400.. boring. just gum trees and stupid kangaroos, which tend to hop out in front of ya. have owned quite a few bikes. last was a TDM. 850. but I found it very top heavy. and I assed of it a few times. had a v strom 650 in NZ.. good bike. then a DR 650. that was good, got a bit light in the front on the road....
Iam coming back to nz. and looking for a motard. haven't got room to work on it .. as I will be living on a boat.
have got somewhere to leave the bike...
I think KTM have a 690 tard... does anyone know about them? have heard they are quite good bikes..
Australia isn't that great really. the shelias drive me mad when they open there mouths..
were I live has got a few snakes. mainly browns... 1 bite and ya got about 45 minutes to get to hospital.
sitting here a few days ago. and looked up.. there was a spider in a web.
I got out some spray.. and shot it.. then a bigger spider comes out. now iam a kiwi. I don't know much about spiders. I caught it in a jar....
an aussie mate turns up.. and asked what it was. FUK.. he said.. don't touch it.
it was a black widow.... dangerous things....
have just got back from the philippenes... didn't do any biking there.... theres people everwhere. but had a bit of fun... had a bit of a look on retardme for a motard.. but iam not in a hurry..... something will come up.

It is a shame you could make it as it was a great day on the beach...... but with the call out I had to shoot that deer making me later and your commitments in the afternoon you would not have ended up with much beach time

This could have been you :P

Can any one recommend a space in Auckland to mess around in/get used to a motard/not annoy other people? I have two days leave I have to use this month so during work hours would work too.

Have just ordered a Husky, can't wait till it arrives! :2thumbsup

Would recommend going to to Warkworth via Puhoi Pub via Coatesville.

I did that last weekend, took the gravel detour (I think it was Upper Waiwera Rd?) to Puhoi. Was awesome. just make sure you fill up in Silverdale, I nearly ran out of reserve between Puhoi and Warkworth. Filled up 5 times on the one trip haha.

Roads of note:
Ridge Rd, off Riverhead Coatesville
And my favourite - Woodcock Rd near Warkworth

I'm a noob, so YMMV on how awesome you find the the roads.

I am leading the Pie and Pint run next Sunday for the fat bikers, Starting Papakura Autobahn, to Kihikihi for a pie, back to Waingaro for a pint then home..... via SH22 for some and SH1 for the rest :)

What K's do you get on a tank.... Might have to throw some fuel in the saddle bags :P (or do another regroup at a fuel station)

Just after something a bit thicker than what Suzuki provides, the case savers are also a must, and I'm also tempted to get some better axel sliders, the Big Knobs (http://www.bigknobs.com.au/) ones are nice, may be a little on the high price side but I've been told they are good .. and the guy making them is an Aucklander living in Oz.

strandedinnz
22nd September 2013, 23:15
The sliders that come on the SM are are a bit naff in that they can get pulled out when sliding alone the road, the Big Knobs have a steel pin all the way through, so more chance for them to stay on the bike taking the damage then coming off and the forks/swingarm taking the damage.

Plus they got recommended here on KB so they must be good right ? ;)

Pie and pint run, with the option of some windy roads on the way home on 22 if you like, but if going out 22 you Motard riders will need to fill at Ngaruawahia or cart some gas to top up at Wangaro, or go out to Huntly and home on SH1 like a bunch will be, still some tighter stuff but opens up to some open windy roads :)

Personally I'd not silicone them on, I'd get some of that velcro tape with the sticky back, then if you need to get it off you can :) Though finding some tape that won't come off once warmed up might be a bit awkward.

Braided meant to be much better for harder braking but will wait and see. Will need to look at brake pads and fluid change perhaps as the brakes feel shit, guess I could just be used to them now though.

Why would I want to take it off? Might have to think more on this one but I'd have thought you'd want it on there proper in case you're in an accident?

Just had a little look at the TT savers on their website ... I think they screw on anyway, looks like the saver goes right over and has passthrough holes for the original bolts ... be interesting to have a looksie at yours when you get them :)

It has found its way on here....

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=3092&day=2013-9-29&c=all

I have the approval of her indoors to go out this sunday :) I'll drop a PM for details.

Cheers, bizarrely enough it was the eyedrops they gave me at my eye test today...embarrassing but they were nice about it. Rode the bike the short way home, then my luverly elderly parents offered to come and take me back to their place for some TLC. Still got a headache and that 'somethings not quite right' feeling.

I would be asking them what is in the drops and seeing your doctor. If you come across that product again the reaction will be worse.

You need to know what it is.

Im allergic to Penicillin. If I touch it the result is dramatic. I cant even give it to my kids in case I accidentally touch a pill.

Bosslady have I seen you riding through the Mount Eden shops occasionally in the mornings? There's a lady on a black DRZ and she looks like she knows her stuff, so if that's you, I have no idea why you think you need help :P

I wouldn't call mine a motard, but has a motard-ish riding position and it's the best bloody bike I've ever had, so easy to handle even for a fairly heavy thou. It's certainly a bit of a change from the old sports bikes eh! If you're ever looking for a riding buddy I'm around, although I wouldn't be able to give many pointers haha.

Just saw this, I'd be keen. Installed something called a "Booster Plug" on my bike today, be interested to try it out. Supposed to be an easy 10 minute job, took me two hours...usual story. Also I'll definitely be wearing a hat when not on the bike, due to the unpleasant after effects of sunburn. :o

I'm too lazy to read the whole post... have you done the jet kit, 3x3, K&N, etc etc. They do like to breathe.
