Just watching the midday news and  bloody tourists moaning about the amount of smoke the Earnslaw pumps out.....christ they should be appreciative to be able to see such a rare thing; doesn't stop the @#*s blasting around in jet boats that pump carbon monoxide straight into the water system

Oh yes, the huge amount of pollution a small steam boat makes lol. I bet those same cunts complaining drive around in a fucking landrover on the way to work

As for the jet boat operator, hello pot :tugger:

Easy for them to forget that it was the Earnslaw that made Queenstown an iconic destination way way before adventure tourism.

The old hag on the news bleating about  should F-off back to her Florida retirement village :shifty: ...probably older the Earnslaw anyhow

The Coleslaw is allowed to do that, it's a heritage steam boat. It has permits. Perhaps rowing boats should be provided for the whingers who want to get across the lake to Walter Peak Station in environmental safety?

I'll add my  to the rest of them.

Probably adds up to a small fraction of the emissions from the tour buses sitting idling at the kerb at the same time.....

If the ship has been belching out black smoke for 100+ years, then why isn't the wonderful scenery the tourists still come to see, been coated with soot etc.

I dearsay, some genius will come up with an electric system to drive the Earnslaw and have " cutesy " imitation black smoke that is non pollutant to appease the sanctimonious blue haired farts from Florida.

Can't belive that someone who lives in or near Queerstown could actually see any point in complaining about the Earnslaw. Makes a bit of smoke, wow! Get over your poor miserable lives and go find something serious to complain about, please.
Worse some sandal wearing tree hugging greeny will make it an item of interest at parliaments next sitting and POOF ( Oh wait theres another one wanting the reins) the good ol Earnslaw will be toast.
Wankers haven't got proper lives and don't have to worry about the mundane like having or finding a proper job, raising their kids ( they don't have them, this sort)the usual shgit that the ret of us deal with day in and day out.
Fuck Em, let the Earnie belch as much smoke as she wants, she's old enough and earned the right.

yeah nah mabey.
I can't help think that there could be a compromise somewhere. If I farted in your face every morning its not that amazing - but if I farted in your face randomly one a year you would be surprised, amazed, perhaps even inspired.

Having been on the old girl more than once - I think there is a place for her. But at burning 1 ton of coal an hour, that place could be say 3 times a week.......and a fun "lets go check out the good old steamer". Not as an actual form of transport - more an adventure.

Kinda like what motat do with their various steam tractor engines. Felt really special to go see them fired up. When I was in Queenstown last xmas wife asked me about Earnslaw - "What's that? Should we go for a trip?"
"Nah just some old steamship, we can look at it tomorrow"

I swear part of my childhood died then - I felt really stink that I didn't care about her anymore. But think about it - when you were last there - did you go for a ride? Or even care that it was running? Be honest now.

I mean who gave a shit about the Kingston flyer? Did you go on it last time your were there?

Just as well they didn't visit Rottenrua, might want to stick a million ton concrete cap on the place. Wonder if they are aware of Merckas stance on the Kyoto Protocol.

I plan trips south around the times I can stop and smell that smell.

It's the smell of my childhood.

Fracking Hippys

Their "carbon footprint" is staggering, as they fly to the Antarctic to watch the ice melt, or to a conference in Geneva.
Last election, 70,000 Green votes came from overseas, and it takes half a ton of aviation fuel burnt in the stratosphere, to get one smelly hippie to Los Angeles.

You do the maths.

This picture of a smelly anti-fracking hippy has been added to to point out just how ridiculous their hypocrisy is.

It really makes you wonder – do anti-fracking protestors think nylon tents, PVC groundsheets, and plastics grow on trees? No doubt the tents also contain high tech synthetic fibre sleeping bags, and gas powered camp cookers.

Do these hypocrites actually think about what sort of world they would have to endure, without the cheap hydrocarbons, and cheap plastic synthetics, the petroleum source of which they oppose?

Yeah nah I have to admit I did a mental facepalm travelling on it when the captain( / purser whatever) proudly announced to the passengers that it uses one tonne of coal per hour.

In it is a cool ride, however in this day & age where eco tourism is fashionable something like that doesn't have to be said.

Fair call. It is what it is but in this day & age best to accentuate the positive. Coal not really a medal winner down south at the mo.

Off topic, but there is talk of re-opening the coal mines oop here. Top quality for steam boats & we have a steam train tootling through town too. Poop poop.

I spend a bit of time in Queenstown and there are times when it looks like he has thrown a couple of tires on the fire. It is scenic, it is historic, but I am surprised nobody has complained before about this little corner of 100% pure NZ. Yes, the planes that bring the complainers over here dump out far more emissions, but you don't see them.

The cream cakes and the sing along on the way back are worth it though, so fuck em.

Once apon a time Queenstown was a proper adventure tourism frontier 100% eco friendly and the old girl was plying her trade gracefully day in & day out that's what made the place; it's just the recent years of Queenstown's existence that have screwed the place with the hordes of wannabe eco tourists & jumped-up goodtime charlie pissed heads that have ruined what was a tranquil beautiful place.
Come dusk & into the wee hours in the township see how many of the pricks are being eco friendly

:yes:T'is the same up here in the season. After swimming at the Dolphins, sticking hooks into fish & praising the lovely ocean from a 1000hp jetboat or jetski, it's off to the pub for a good brawl, a burger & a vomit onto someones shop window. Admittedly only a minority.
Mind you, the locals do worse all year round.

North Dakota, right now, is being absolutely destroyed. On a grand scale. Any American having a go about the Earnslaw should fuck off and kill themselves.

Total hypocrisy because they can see the smoke. Heck I ride two strokes so maybe I'm biased, but yes drop in the Ocean combined with "pick a loaf out of your own eye"

That boat is friggin cool. We went on it when down for our Honeymoon (quite) some while back & all very good, all very rustic.

- then it accelerates from standstill. Feck me it can Haul!:shit:

Energy release from idle is intense compared to IC engine & this was a good demonstration. I'm not sure if they always give it that much stick, but I was well impressed.

Last time in the States i was amazed at the sheer waste that goes on. Thousands of acres covered in abandoned oil pumps.
All of them going rusty with hoards of long grass growing up around them.
Americans have to be worst eco friendly people i have come across.
A hanger the size of 10 footy fields that house hundreds if not thousands of Stealth fighters with cobwebs all over them.
Why??? For "just in case" i was told. Huge waste of space and money.
I could go on and on about the things i saw that made me shake my head, it was quite astonishing to be fair.:done:

Just because it is not said doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

It's funny how every one gets up tight about things - but don't actually admit they have taken a ride recently.

I have lots of cool stuff that I tinker with - some of it very old and inefficient.
But because I don't get to see and play with it much - it makes the moment special.

I would rather have 100% of a once in a lifetime experience than the 10% of same shit different day.
Earnslaw should have that kind of excitement involved. The sheer fact it doesn't tells me something is up and perhaps we have missed something.

I am big enough to admit that I didn't take the last opportunity to enjoy the old girl last time I was there. Lots of little men here creating tea pot storms because it is their god given right to defend a boat stays on the water even though they don't know why.

Having seen the old man dive down at the port, only to bring up tons of spilt coal - As a kid I couldn't help but think. She is cool - but something has to change, we have to stop milking the cow for all she is worth and make her special again. Like seeing the britten race, or seeing a blimp.
Rare things, seen rarely, are a moment to remember. Bucket list stuff.

Earnslaw is not in my bucket list, but I would like to think that it could be in future. But the fact it travels every day, 2 times a day.........I don't count that as something I am likely to miss. Perhaps I will catch it next year. Or 10 years from now.......I will keep postponing it. As lots of you have.

:weird: Knowing it's there continuing what it's does is enough and that's what makes it special; the majority of us have taken trips on it on multiple occasions but we aren't running down to Queenstown every 5mins to take another ride. It's unique and iconic...there are people who come from around the world to see it & experience it. For decades it was what made Queenstown what it is before all the tourism operators started milking the place for all it's worth.
It'll remain far more environmentally friendly than that bloody catamaran once it's operational; It's a historic machine in a beautiful setting so leave it be...Queenstown has already been ruined by modernisation & the lust for the almighty dollar, don't destroy it any further.

Yeah maybe running it 3-4 times a week would bring back a bit of the mystic of the old girl but don't shelve it just because twats with nothing better to do have a moan...if they don't like it they can F-off back to where they came from

A couple of weeks ago they had posters on a vacant shop window on the main street suggesting KFC were coming. I imagine it was a piss take but some of the comments written on the posters suggest some think otherwise.
