View Full Version : Tardme - yet another rant

HenryDorsetCase

I have come to the conclusion that a lot of people who think they are trying to sell stuff on tardme aren't really trying to sell things, particularly motorbikes, at all.

They use it as an online vanity project: See my cool bike? Isn't it awesome. Yes its five years old and has done 50,000kms and because I have put tassels and these bitchin new handgrips on it, of course it is "worth" 90% of the price of a brand new one with a two year warranty.

Get real!

Indeed. In the current market, once a bike has been rolled out of the showroom, it's worth much less.

And Mr Insurance Company will happily tell one what one's bling is worth if one makes a claim. It's largely worth nothing.

No one is ever going to put their bike up for sale for what it's worth to be pushed lower.
If you don't want to buy the said bike at said price then don't, but calling the wambulance is a bit ott.

I have recently sold one of my bikes on Trade Me, i had it priced quite high for a while as i didn't really want to sell it but the wife said i had to many bikes that weren't being used so one had to go  but in the end it sold fo a good price and i used the money to buy another bike :Punk: haha the wife wasn't to impressed when i got it home.

A set of Yoshi end cans is considered a "Trick mod" by many people which "dramatically raises horsepower and torque" so no doubt the bikes worth an extra 3k just for the exhausts...

Got my Busa with 29,000km on the clock for $7900 and it included 3 sets of gear and a pack rack. Deal of the century in my eyes, there are genuine people on there but there are also a fark load of dreamers...

yes its a lot like that now, if you are trading a bike you look at the highest price example on trademe and that sets the market price apprantly, however if you are buying one you find the cheapest and that sets the market price in a lot of poeples eyes,

If you dont think the bike is worth that price, dont buy it,

also learn how to use the expired listings search, very handy to see what is actually selling and not just sitting there

I'm happy, parted out a car for almost twice what I had it listed for as a classified.
Other than the VW world being made of tight arses who want stuff for nothing. $1 reserves meet the market.

Watched a bike for the last month and bought it for a grand less than he started with.
Sold a Triumph project in a day....I doubt if it was a good investment but it sure saved me from it becoming a money pit.

Mind you, I see lot of bike dealers going on TM too and finding the cheapest price for said model and telling you that that what it is worth to for him to trade. Even if it is 2-3 years older and has 10-20K more milage then the one you are trading...

i have no doubt they do, but ifs its on trademe its still not sold, it is a good reference tool when used right, but in the end, something is only worth what someone else will pay for it,

I totally agree. I see bikes sitting on there for 6-12 mnths and sellers still beleive that they are worth an outrageous asking price. I guess it all depends if it is a model that is popular and how much someone is willing to pay for it. I had one dealer tell me that my old 08 CB900F with 8K on the clock was only worth 4k to trade, and he had an 05 model with 45K sitting there for $8.5K. Went to the dealer next door and got offered $6.5K for the same bike not more then 20 minutes later.

Had a guy once tell me a story about a car he was selling.

Put it up for* a bit over what he was after and he had about 5 people lowball him.

After a couple months he dropped it to what he was actually after and someone came around, inspected, and bought it at that advertised price without haggling as they felt it was a fair price.

That little anecdote has always stuck with me.

Prolly because it makes little to no sense.

Do you mean he asked for a little bit more than he really wanted, and got lowballed. Then when he dropped to what he actually wanted, it sold for that, no questions?

2. Excessive fees - greedy pigs.
3. Extra charges for everything. A$$holes.
4. Excessive fees - greedy pigs.
5. Crappy search functionality.

7. Reverts to Featured First everytime you change search.

9. Allowing negative feedback from buyers who never pick up their sh*t.
10. Excessive fees.
11. You have got to go to your watchlist to find items you're bidding on.
12. Excessive fees.

It's a shame ebay never took off as it's functionality is 100 x better....

1. Shit sanity filters on their searching. 2cc car (2L)? Made in 0093 A.D.? No problem.
2. Dealer listings. Usually have fuckall content, 1/4 of which will be incorrect, and a 50cc scooter in the 'tourers' category? (Complained about one of these listings and still in the wrong category 2 months later)
3. Mobile site is pants, I can't figure out how to get to the 'Helmets, Clothing and Footwear' category without switching to full version.
4. Excessive fees!!!!
5. No free tech support chat for established customers (say, over 50 feedback)
6. Categorisation is terrible for some things. For example.
Clothing > Unisex accessories > Unisex Bags > Backpacks
Clothing > Womenswear > Bags and Handbags > Backpacks
Clothing > Boys > Bags and Accessories > Backpacks
Clothing > Girls > Bags and Accessories > Backpacks
Clothing > Kids > Bags and Accessories > Bags & backpacks
(sorry menswear, no backpacks for you, but you can have....)
Sports > Camping & outdoors > Packs > Day packs

etc.....

What's really interesting is to check out some of the listings and auctions on early to mid 1990's Japanese "performance" cars such as a WRX, Mitsubishi Evo, and in particular the RWD Nissans like the Skylines, Laurels and A31 Cefiros. Some of the language takes quite some time to decipher. The Q&A section in auctions is known to be especially entertaining.
