View Full Version : Dual purpose road legal sub 250cc
DrunkenMistake

Hey guys,
I'm looking for a sub 250cc dual purpose bike,
Must do at least 100km/h with a fat ass on it.
Something older like an XL250 or what have you,
I want to do some casual trail rides and some middle of nowhere fishing over summer,
I also want to teach the misses how to ride, so its going to take some punishment,
Im pretty happy if it looks looks balls, so long as its a good runner and is road legal, i.e Rego runs out in a week and has a current W.O.F,
I was scoping up a 200 for a little under $400 but the seller is dicking around a little too much for my liking so I thought I would try here,
Somewhere closer to Dunedin is preferable maybe as far as Invergiggle/Oamaru,
Probably dreaming on the price but I am a tight ass after all, let me know what you have and what you want and I might be able to convince the wicked witch of our joint bank account to let me dip into it.
Cheers.

I had a xl185s that did 100 easy enough
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/dirt-bikes/auction-631032504.htm
Would be ok but in welly and would need so indicators etc and plate added so would cost 500 to road legal it.
I think 500 is going to be hard to find a road legal trail bike

Yeah im thinking you might be right,
Im in no rush so will sit back and wait I suppose,
I was looking at one and the seller was interested in $300 but he has taken the auction down and told me it has some sort of clutch issue but didnt want to go into any detail as to what it was,
if it was fuck all then I would make another offer to snatch it up haha, had a months rego left and a wof till december and was a runner.
Thanks for the link though

tf185 came out road legal you could ask this guy if the wiring harness is complete and if the speedo works. $300 in your area.
led indicators and brake lights are very cheap to get.

as long as chasis number is there and its not been stolen shouldn't be bad. Ive done 4 new plates but you need factor plate cost,6 months rego and a warrant at about maybe 350-400 now for those. indicators about 60 for 4 off tard and 30 for a tail light. You want to know what wiring bits etc still exist.
Sometimes a better budget to start is less hassle.

free police check of chassis or vin or old plate for no interest. brake declaration if after 1991(memory only. need confirm that). then take it into testing station the rest is like a warrant of fitness.

I was looking at this one just a moment ago will make some enquiries through work to see if maybe they can stash a bike of that size into a pallet box and freight it down with my next stock order.
Or I guess if the plate is on it still I could ride it down.. im sure 300km on knobbies would be all good :P

Dealers plate if your friendly with a local bike shop. You will want need tires if your going to have it on the road anyway. The turners one is already road legal etc but idd say that's going to go to 1700 approx by auction end.

Yeah its looking that way,
Realistically I could comfortably go up to $1200 but that would be my max, so it would need to be fairly easy to collect and be legal beagle and good to go

the dr 200 would cost 400 to road legal assuming the plates dead. If the plates not 12months expired, less and the old owner gets the back pay bill in the post later.

Yip I asked the seller if he thought it might be warrantable as it is at the moment, if he says yes then I will look into that one a bit further,
It wont hurt if it has to sit in my shed for a month or so,
Although it is running out of room these days..

I think its a good deal if you can get a hold of it for 800+-100. Looks tidy. Even has the original passenger pegs.

This guy had a starting bid of $400 and said it had a whine and he thought the bottom end bearing was shagged,
Having talked to him on the phone it sounds more like its either got low oil or needs an oil change, its more of a tick that a knock or a whine and its only uphill,
He removed the ad after discovering it needed new rear wheel bearings and there was an issue with the clutch, having talked to him about these issues as well, sounds like the clutch issue rolls back to the oil,
Bike has another weeks worth of Rego and has a WOF until december,
I was pretty happy to go to $500 for it so long as he tossed in the gear he was advertising with it, I offered him $400 and he came back with $575 so I have made a counter off and he is going to sit on it for the night,
Will wait and see how we get on, if I get it and the bearing does go pop then worst case is I could about put a secondhand motor in it, or what not.

Looks like a possible chain to tight. Do you have shot of the other side? it could be chain and final bearing noise.
Car oil added is likely the clutch issue.

The noise sounds like over tight chain that has tight spot. The chain seems to be tight in photo and trail bikes get tighter when suspension lowers down with rider load.

Workmate who is a field service tech out there had a look for me, he said it looked like the chain had a tight spot otherwise sounded fine,
I have made an offer and he has accepted @ $475

Comes with some gear, so will probably flick them off cheap or give them to someone who needs them, they won't fit me.
Now to just recoup some losses by selling some shit on trademe to keep SWMBO happy.. haha
