Standard wheels vs motard wheels?

Well Ive got my self a KTM 450exc for a bit of dual sport fun and other stuff, so looking at setting up a second wheel set for more road use.
the question is whats the difference between standard wheels with road tires vs motard wheel in terms road feel and handling?
other words do I need motard wheels?

Dual purpose tires, average on the road and under average off road. Or average off road and under average on the road.

If you want to go hard on the road and on dirt, get 2 sets of rims.

The big benefit of getting road rims, tire choice. Try getting a decent road tire for a skinny 21" rim...

Yeah have been checking out the T7 wheel sets, seems to be the simple way to go,
So how does the change in wheel size effect the geo / handling?
I'm not looking to go too hard out to start off with so something that's not knobbly will prolly do for tire.

i fitted road tyres to my XR on standard rims (had them straightened first), the front was a pirelli route and really i couldn't fault it's grip factor, hey it's not a superbike, so it's not going to push the front so much. The back tyre was some hideous melty thing though and by fluck that was a laugh, it got too hot and slid around everywhere... perhaps i never really got to test the front because of it. Now i've invested in a set of matard wheels thanks to a good bastard off kiwi biker. I know it's going to be better. My advice would be this though, if you're going to spend the same amount on either motard rims or standard wheels then go the motard, obviously. But if standard rims are considerably cheaper, put some road tires on your standard wheels first, give it a crack, you might be pleasantly surprised.

To the OP: There are a few things you need to consider. Changing from a 21" front to a 17" front poses a serious suspension consideration because you're dropping the front end of the bike by a significant amount - this can lead to serious instability in a bike that is already quite twitchy (like my 690 Enduro R).
If you start pushing the bike harder on stickier tyres, you can also overcome that suspension quite easily leading to quite a bouncy ride. Unless you're prepared to fully reset the forks and shock each time you swap (not the end of the world of course).
If you head to the track with it, you may wish to consider a front brake upgrade as the brake setup isn't designed to be mega powerful.

I've been quite surprised how fast you can push a set of Continental TKC80's on the road in the dry. I had been considering a set of motard rims for my bike, but am now thinking about just a second set of dirt rims and just running roady tyres on one and pointy tyres on the other.

I run T7 wheels on my CRF and they are pretty sweet for the price, yes I think they are cheap too......

The handling will be vastly improved with better grip on the wider rims and less rotating mass. Go the spokey dokeys.....:yes:
