Working in harmony

Last night was a great case of bikers working together.

I was riding along on the inside lane... traffic was slow, but still moving so I was happy to go along at the same speed.

I spotted a guy in my mirrors, who was filtering. In his mirrors, he spotted someone who was filtering faster than him.

So... with no communication whatsoever, I moved over, to allow the 1st guy filtering room to move over, which he did to allow the 2nd guy through. Once 2nd guy went through (with a thanks to both of us), 1st guy moved back out again, thanked me and carried along on his way.

I then moved back to my original position.

Not one word needed, just simple courtesy. Efficiently done.

Can you imagine anything like that happening with three car drivers?

I can imagine three cars in pieces because they where all trying to be in first place and the drivers blaming each other without taking any responsibility upon themself.

Funnily enough, even though as a rider I know you can easily pass most vehicles, whenever I see a bike coming up behind me when I'm in the car, I always pull over as far to the left as possible to allow them plenty of room to pass! Some acknowledge me, some don't, but I still do it where it is safe. I know they are trying to be courteous, but I hate it when car drivers move over to allow me to pass approaching the brow of a hill or on a really windy section of road. I am never happy about passing in those circumstances in case someone coming the other way is over the centre line.

As for courtesy amongst riders, it is very good to see and should be encouraged! I always move over to give faster riders room to pass, or I keep to the left if I see one filtering through traffic behind me.

Apart from being courteous, its sounds right gentlemanly, coming from England and all. We need more of that here.

No hope of 3 cars doing something like that. Horns blaring, birds flipping. More cars would get in the way too causing even more trouble

I also ride like that myself. A few times in heavy traffic, I've pulled into gaps and allowed faster filterers to pass me, almost a sixth sense sometimes, but it's all part of the brotherhood of riding.. Most of us look after each other..

as for seeing cagers do that, I wouldn't mind one bit.. or trucks for that matter.. just cos they struggle, everyone else has to? pahh.. On the open roads, I do notice that often cars/trucks move over if they can to let me pass easier. They get a big wave back for a thanks..

Aaah the good old days; slower cars pulling caravans, trucks, pulling over onto the shoulder to allow you to pass. Your more likely to get overtaken by a truck these days (if your in a cage). Courtesy seems to be mainly out the window these days. When I'm in the car I try to be as courtious as possible with fellow motorists. It is a pleasant surprise when you are the recipient.

I second that. The amount of times I have come across a cager that would rather spend his time annoying me than allow me to go on my way is immense.

Can happen. Few years ago , when I lived on the Shore I was coming south onto the Harbour Bridge. I in leftmost lane, needed to move to lane on right (in those days left lane was forced to Ponsonby). VERY heavy traffic, nose to tail. Put my indicator on and waited. Car in front of me to the right indicated to move left (ie into my lane). I dropped back a bit to open a space. He pulled left into that, I pulled right into the space he left, as he moved. Looked into my mirror, and loo and behold, the guy now behind me was indicating and moving into the space I just vacated . AND the guy who HAD been behind me before I lane changed moved into the space the last dude vacaated. To top it off, then the guy two spaces back moved left into the now vacant space.

6 cars changed lanes within a few seconds, using one space. All without hassle , all unrehearsed. But if you saw it , you'd have sworn it had been choreographed. I'm sure though that the Stans and Mabels who saw it would have been purple about such "dangerous driving"

I stuck my arm out the window and gave a high five, one guy tooted, and we all went on our way looking very pleased.

It's really good when you run into a group of competant drivers or riders. Happens sometimes on the open road, really good when you get that.

Have to disagree. I quite often encounter courteous drivers, both on the bike and in the cage. Reckon at least once every day. Always try to give a wave or a toot or something. And , of course, be courteous myself. Hardly ever takes anything in way of time or money to just be a bit helpful to the other guy.

Yeah I agree with Ixion, it doesn't take much to be courteous and its appreciated lots by those around you. Its all good.. =)

Although I think I'd rather be in my cage in that stiuation. Ive had family in Saudi in the past. Some of the driving I see in NZ is very similar...
