Unbelieveable, what a waste if they shut this off, and I haven't even been up there yet. We need to organise a quick condensed RRRR mission up there.
If all the ADV riders and four wheel drive club partned up might be able to do something, put in a heavy duty gate somewhere and charge a small access fee. 4000 visits time five bucks each would look good on a club balance sheet.
Bit far away from HB but hopefully someone closer can pick up the ball on this one and run with it. Be a chance to show DOC how proper organised access can benefit them like the mountainbike club has been doing.
If someone sets up an organised ADV club structure and fixes this problem it might lead to access into other DOC areas maybe???

Why would you want to restrict access? The issue with with the hut, not the road in. Access restrictions don't prevent idiots going up. As others mentioned in the article, the hut is probably too difficult to maintain in that area. It's a destination, but having been there, I wouldn't want to stay there.

You can understand the frustration here but why do we have this mentality in NZ to punish the majority because of the actions of a few plonkers? A motion sensor camera hidden in the bush might sort it...that and bring back public floggings, the stocks and hanging :spanking:

Magic road. Like I said in the other thread, they’ve been threatening to remove the hut for years. It’s actually the road that they can’t be bothered maintaining.

That was my take on it.

+1 If the last 500metres involved walking the hut would suffer less.

Typical govt dept, always an ulterior motive. Maybe we should report some rare bird sightings up there and the road will get funding :)
When I say restrict access above, I mean only in relation to the idiots and its a better option than DOC closing it off to everyone. Yes you wouldn't stop all the vandals but a few minor things would keep 95% of them away.

You would have to have some huge rocks or something a gate would not last 5 minutes.i dont blame them.its not the authorities to blame its the f wits who smash/steal/shoot/burn stuff. And its the road that allows the f wits up there

just pull the hut down & stop maintaining the road...
become a better ride..
DOC's happy / 4WDers are happy / Motor bikers are happy..

The road also goes through a section of private land, so this may also be a factor.

Lots of speculation on my part.

Possible not. Takapari Rd is a gazetted road for the lower portion, which parallels the range. I'm betting that there is an easement for the balance of it.

I'm thinking that DOC have made a call on the 'value' of keeping the road maintained, & that the hut is a subsidiary consideration to that.

They wouldn't want to destroy or reduce maintenance on the hut without public consultation for primarily 'political' reasons. If they destroyed the hut without that, & some one later had an issue because weather closed in rapidly, you can imagine the outcry.

However they can / are using the hut as a trojan horse to advance those discussions. If a 4wd or deerstalkers assoc picks up the tab on the hut, then so much the better.

Rare bird sightings / snails / in fact any rare or protected species would give DOC better grounds to close the road, to in order to better protect...
