and yet still NZ refuses to have compulsory professional driver training
of course the reason is clear,so many muppets would fail their courses that they would just drive without a license anyway, and also the amount of vested interest and powerful political lobby behind the all powerful automobile mean that any change is at best slow and at worst will never happen.
Meanwhile when I ride I expect every other road user to be a homicidal incompetent maniac and often I am right.
meh..same old same old

At the end of the report, it mentions men are far more inclined to be involved in accidents than women. I guess that is to be expected given that the car has replaced the battle field as a means to 'prove' one's self.

 Sorry that might the PC quasi correct answer but the truth is that most driving is still done by males. Are the females driving become more the norm then it will balance out, the same as how with more females in work the rate of female heart attacks has risen. Another factor in this report is the area, Tuaranga being NZ fastest growing city as oldies retire there, thanks to Age Concern arranging for the abolition of retesting, this population is driving on lessons learnt last century and is definitely a generation where the male drives.
Note the way they try to spin the poor driving in to a speed issue. True if you can't drive you can't drive at speed but instead of reducing the speed and having the bad drivers still crashing off cliffs etc they need to bite the bullet and improve training, possibly even some form of retest with the 10 year renewal.

Most driving is probably done by males but men do tend to have a more aggressive approach to most things in life. It's how the species survives.
As for Tauranga having a high elderly driving population, it would be interesting to see real stats that show how many of them are involved in accidents. Most would not do a high annual mileage and then, mostly around the urban areas.
Having said that, I was pleased to see my elderly father fail his last retest. He had become a high risk on the road. Re testing back then ( 2003 ) definitely saved him and most probably someone else.

I heard there were some insurance company stats that clearly showed women had more claims for low speed, parking type damage and men wrote more cars off.
