View Full Version : Mom in hospital with viral meningitis
Maha
9th September 2013, 00:04
Anne has had the worst headache in years which started on Friday. Today we went to Red Beach Medical centre and they sent us down to North Shore Hospital for a head scan
CT was done as were blood samples, came back all clear. They wanted to a Lumbar Puncture, there was no way I was sticking around while they did that but it had to be done just to rule out everything that they suspected.
The spinal fluid showed she has Viral Meningitis, not the kind that will kill you, but a stay in hospital to sort it all out. They are keeping her till the headache goes.
I have just got home after leaving this morning just after 10am, long long day for us both, I best get some sleep as I have work tomorrow.
Already got a text as to what to bring on my next visit...I might need the van!

Well this is fun. NOT!
I am home armed with morphine, tramadol, panadol and brufen, still have a back ground headache, and can barely walk thanks to the doctor who found the nerve root (I love that word) that has left me in agony in my lower back, around into my pelvis and down the tops of my thighs. I screamed alright, I never had that much intense pain, that just went on and on, and because the needles were deep in my spine and had to be sheathed before being removed, it took ages for the doctor was able to take them out.
Far canal, I am not making any sense here, too much shit in my system I guess.
Treatment for this is rest, lots of fluids, and as much pain relief as I need to keep the headache at bay.
ED at North Shore Hospital is fantastic, the ADU on the other had is appalling.
Thanks for the well wishes. I am looking forward to feeling much better really soon I can assure you.
I can now prove I have a brain, I have pics to prove it, though the doc was reluctant to comment on how it functions.
Off for a nana nap, I am utterly knackered.

Observations from day 5 with the dreaded lurgy.
1) The neighbours poxy, yappy dogs that annoy the hell out of you when they bark outside, all night long, REALLY piss you off after a massive continuous headache for 4 days and a night with no sleep in hospital. The council will be visiting her today  Mind you, I don't feel bad about that, I rang her last Wednesday after 2 nights of disturbed sleep thanks to her barking dogs, she said she had not heard them, nor her phone ringing at 3:30 am when I rang her about the dogs earlier. Seemed as she didn't hear them, it was all good. I told her I would just ring the council each and everytime I got woken by them in future. So, 2 phone calls last night, I reckon I fell into a coma after 1am LOL. These dogs are a known barking nuisance, the entire neighbourhood detest them and the owner does not care apparently. I am fairly certain she was told the council would take steps to remove the dogs if they received any further complaints, I am not the only one complaining :sunny:
2) Even though you are exhausted, and fully loaded with Tramadol and morphine, you still hurt, just now in other places, as well as your head :violin:
3) My boss (incredibly demanding normally) is very supportive and does not want me back at work until I am fully well, "take as much time as you need to recover", I am his PA and there is very little cover available for me
4) My GP, who I cant ever get so see, rang me and wants to see me
5) Typing while under the influence of drugs creates some wonderful new words. Editing the words makes my head hurt, so I am off to have a little lie down :baby:

Take it easy, eh? Codeine is very addictive so try to get off it as soon as poss. Tramadol, if you can tolerate it well, is good for long term pain management. Thinking of you! If your head is okay you can handle things better, but if your head hurts, it's no fun at all! :bye:

I hear you about codeine, I just seem to sleep on it, cant see me getting addicted to sleeping somehow
Great day today, got up took pills, watched 1 Americas cup race, took pills, nana nap 9am to 11am.
Roused myself, had some food, took pills, Mark drove me to Hands On to get this wrist checked. Cast came off, tests were done, cast stays off
Got driven home, took pills, had a nana nap for an hour or so.
Roused myself...
Rest is apparently what I need most, so sleep during the day sorts that, now all I need is a full nights sleep, best part today...
No more cast on my arm! Not better yet but much improved, I have some exercises to strengthen my wrist - she explained them to Mark as I am not sure I totally compos mentis really :o

Couldn't wait to get off the Tramadol after my knees-fix
I had a similar opinion of Oxycodone (another synthetic opiate as Tramadol is) when given it following knee joint surgery. I have no problem with morphine or codeine (both opiates), but the synthetic version made me feel like shit. Depressed, nightmares and overall just a real bad head space. Told them to stick the Oxycodone after a day's worth. Guess the makers missed a few things in the synthesisation!
Mom
12th September 2013, 19:15
Well that was interesting. Just come back from the doctors who thinks I have a viral encephalitis, not meningitis. Oh joy! Still all it really means is it has a longer recovery time. My poor little brain :baby:
Get to tell my boss I off for another week at this stage. Wont I be the popular one?
Might see if I can do some from home if the brain will think that is.
Fatigue is my number 1 problem at the moment, I hope a re-jig of my medications will improve that in the days to come, a balance between pain management and fatigue. How decadent to have 2 naps a day :D

They were going to send me home on oxycodone, tramadol and panadol, then changed it to tramadol, panadol and morphine. I am lucky I guess, tramadol is manageable as far as the side effects, I am not sure I would drive too far while taking it to be fair, tramadol and codeine = no driving at all.

I asked the Hand Doc today if the clutch action is therapeutic? ...affirmative! :2thumbsupThat surprises me. Those spring things that tennis players squeeze to work on forearm strength are really bad for your wrists I was told, as they compress the wrist joint. Clutch is a lot lighter than those springs though, so might not be the same.

You seem to have had a rough couple of years with your health. I'm glad you're back on your feet again.

:eek:Sheet only just seen this I hope you are all well and and healthy now Anne fook that Meningitis shit

How decadent to have 2 naps a day :DAh do you own any cats? cos cats are encephalitis carriers

Ah do you own any cats? cos cats are encephalitis carriersI thought the strain that cats carry, was only likely to harm pregnant women, and infants...
Is there something Anne and Mark aren't telling us?

It's been a long time since that could have been a possibility in this household, and my kids wont do the decent thing and make me a Grandma so we have to make do with a little black cat. Fortunately she is not a carrier of toxin/toxit/whatsit thing your much smarter bro named :sunny:

Toxoplasmosis.
thats parasitic encephalitis,, but most docs are hard pressed to tell the diff from viral, aids patients and low immunity are at risk
its attacks anyone immune compromised and moms stress would contribute to recent issues
the body is great at telling us what we need to do, if we listen carefully
stress affects immunity, acids foods promote disease
