Hey people,
i already have awesker and ~XD coming around to mine this Saturday (27th) to have a tinker with a few things so i thought i'd leave it open for anyone else to come around too.
I have heaps of cleaning stuff, a decent amount of chain lube and brake fluid. If you want to do an oil change/filter change, lube and adjust your chain, check your brakes, and give your bike a good old wash but dont have the space or place to do it then you may as well come round to mine and get it done.
dont expect anything for the resources (though i wont be supplying you with oil and filters for your bike) but i wont be turning down any offers :devil2:
I am by no means a mechanic but i have tinkered with my bike enough to be able to do the basics - if any 'know how' people like FROSTY want to come along to make it just a tad more beneficial that would be awesome.
just post here if you are interested... will post my address and a time later on. Might go for a quick jump out to muriwhai afterwards for those interested.
p.s. if anyone has old 4L oil containers lying around can you please PM me so i can pick them up, they come in handy for disposing of the old oil.

I got two old oil containers sitting in my garage...
You are most welcome to them as they are just laying there waiting for the next inorganic collection (2006)
I got to lube my throttle cable.... as the throttle aint winding back that quick... I got the CRC for the job.

Have you got summat else you can use instead of CRC, crashe? It's not the best of lubricants.
Did I see you riding down Ponsonby Rd yesterday? (Can't remember what time - might've been around 4PM).

I was walking the other way, just north of Williamson Ave. If I'd waved, you would've gone, "Who the hell is that?!?"

Well, it's better than nothing. There is lube specificaly formulated for cables, but I dunno what it's got in it. The trouble is, most cables these days have nylon or teflon liners in the outer sheath, and shoudn't be oiled. CRC and WD40 are good for freeing up seized things, but not that great for prolonged slipperiness, although they can help clean out a cable full of gunk or dried-out lubricant.
I had a quick google of the interdweeb, and some sites said "don't lube plastic-lined cables", while others said it was fine. Most said to use a dedicated cable lubricant, and many said if your clutch/throttle/whatever is sticky, it's more likely to be the levers at the end and/or a cable that's routed incorrectly so that it's bent, kinked or impeded, and that if the cable is sticking, it needs to be replaced.
This site looked sensible: http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcdirt/trailrider/2tlbox97.html

I did pull out the barrel inside the handle bars the other day....
and just about lost the bolt holding it all together inside the handlebar itself....
was a wee panic on.... hehehe.
But after putting it all back together.... the throttle itself is still not working properly.
I have CRC'ed the bit on the actual bike....down below...
(Ok I can't recall the actual name)
so it looks like I will have to pull it all apart...
a bit like what Gazzar did to Keystone19's throttle on the other track day...
Thanks for the website info.... will have a good read of that.

I might be up for that. I need to do some basic maintenance on my bike. Where I live is mud and gravel so if you have a proper garage of flat area that would be handy. Any time in particular? Do you have a good selection of tools? Where are you?

Good idea. Certainly needs some extra mojo. Unfortunately the R1 is prolly in parts all over wrecker yards in NZ.

Would copper wire do the trick??
Ignorant person asking a question - not suggesting an answer.
R6_kid
27th August 2005, 12:44
you need a split pin. the pin part goes thru the hole in the threaded bar (axle) then has one half loop back up to stop it coming out, hte other end is the head and fits into a grove/slot cut in the nut, this stops the nut from turning back on the axle.
Whats the point in compromising when i have what he needs anyway... :wait:

No. Use a proper split pin. They're there for a purpose. Copper wire is soft, might stretch, break, or just allow the nut to loosen anyway. Not knocking you, just answering.

Yep it's a bit cleaner. Crashe is a real stickler for cleanliness (typcial woman) . Bike feels much the same as before, but not so snatchy as chain is tighter. All I need is 50hp more and some sticky tyres and it'll be an excellent bike.
Thanks to Gareth for his tools and place etc!
