Hey guys just wondering how bad of an idea is it to get a yamaha r6 while still riding on a restricted license. I'm not asking about riding it just if i get pulled over by a cop?

If you get pulled up then i think its a $400 dollar fine for wrong class of license not to mention if you have an accident the insurance won't cover you due to the fact that legally you should'nt have been on the bike in the first place.

Don't pull over if you don't want to get an infringement notice. But don't do a runner either unless you're sure you can safely get away with it.

There's not much "chase" to begin with if you get away quickly enough to disappear from sight within a few seconds. It generally works better if you have a big head start, but first weigh up the risks. It's usually better to just pull over.

I'm on my learners and ride an R6, had it a year and done quote a few kays, yet to find out what happens when I get pulled up on it, if you're not being a dick you're not likely to be pulled over and usually they don't seem to check bike licenses at RBT checkpoints.
The biggest thing would be whether you have the skill to ride it (definitely not a good choice for a first bike) and the self control to keep the speed down

It becomes a bigger issue should you have a crash on it while still on your R. It's pretty easy to ride outside your restrictions and not get pulled up on it by the popo, but should the expected happen and you have a crash, better hope that it's either not your fault, or the other person has insurance :P
The question you should ask is, if I have a crash, can I afford to pay to fix that lambo I just hit?

Must be a trusting lot down your way mate, they ask to see your license every time you get pulled into an RBT stop up here.
Mind you the odds of getting pulled over for just a license check is pretty much non existent around here unless you do some thing stupid enough to attract them in the first place.
I rode and drove for 5 years without a license and never had an issue with the cops because I simply never gave them cause.
In fact I reckon everybody should do a couple of years without a license because it makes you bloody carefull and the lesson seems to stay with you.
At lest it did with me.:corn:

You need to post a bit more before that changes. Eventually you can customise it. The info is available somewhere if you look for it. Just make up a whole lot of bullshit and post it in as many threads as you can. That is what most do!

I think it's just intended to demonstrate how horribly fucked you could be in the event of an accident. Hit a new Mercedez, VW or Audi (there's plenty of these around, many with absent minded drivers behind the wheel) and you'd have a pretty damn big repair bill hanging over your head. A big repair bill isn't as bad as it could be, though. What if you were to, for arguments take, hit a pedestrian or cyclist in the crossfire and injure them? Sure, you can ride for years and not be pulled over or crash but all it takes is once. It all depends on how much you want to take the risk. A fresh restricted rider on an R6? Doubt he'll be riding it like a grandma...

The lambo was a bit of hyperbole to illustrate a point my illiterate and deliberately obtuse friend.
I was hit by a car on my bike a few weeks back now. I didn't have insurance at the time as it was a new bike. Fortunately, it wasn't my fault, and the lady had full coverage.
However, the point still stands. If you're riding your r6 while on your restricted, you cause a collision, and it's your fault, can you afford it? The damage to my bike after a low speed (~20kPH) slide was $4,000. And that's because it had aftermarket fairings and bits on it. If it had been OEM would have been well in excess of $6,000. And that doesn't cover whatever it cost the lady to fix her car.
Both vehicles were barely damaged. Now, imagine you cause a collision where your r6 is written off, and you've severely damaged somebodies car. It isn't going to take an awful lot to start reaching stupid figures in excess of $30,000.
So to rephrase it for mr literal over there, if you run your r6 up the back of somebodies toyota corolla, can you afford to fix/write off both vehicles?

Yes, try Germany. You just need to take about 14 hours theory lessons and then the theory test, followed by 30-40 hours riding lessons and a practical test. But that would probably result in too much skill to work with your suicide plan. And you seem to be in such a hurry, too...

If I wrote off my R6 and severely damaged a car I would probably be more concerned in my physical state than my financial state, $30k + hospital bills + unable to work = me bankrupt anyway so it really doesn't matter if it's a Corolla or a Lambo.
Plus I live in Christchurch so you're crazy if you're driving a Lambo or the like on our roads

The lambo was a bit of hyperbole to illustrate a point my illiterate and deliberately obtuse friend.
So in other words, it is an emotive argument that tries to sway on on shock value and very little logical basing?
Going by statistics (Pages 20 & 61) (http://www.transport.govt.nz/assets/Import/Documents/The-NZ-Vehicle-Fleet-2012.pdf), the average age of vehicle in NZ is ~15 years. In other words, most vehicles on the road that you will encounter are shitboxes worth fuck all. So statistically, the damage you cause is going to be pretty insiginficant. However, I suspect this situation is somewhat exacerbated by most people's shocking financial incompetence and tendency to live paycheck to paycheck.
I'm certainly not advocating non-insurance, but remember that the real reason to get insurance is to protect your asset, i.e. if some uninsured bro hits you in his bongo wagon and not for some other munter's benifit. Make no mistake about that.

Have to agree here, as I said I do own and ride an R6 myself, on my Ls but I also own a DR650 so I can be legal and I ride it more often than the R6 which mostly gets ridden when I go out of town.

i'd rather red line the cbr than ride an r6 far below its capabilities. the r6 becomes more of status symbol than something you can ride the hell out of and truly enjoy, does it not?

I don't look at mine as a status symbol (it's not helped get me laid). Obviously I rarely use anywhere near the full capabilities of the bike but I love riding it knowing that if I want to take off there are very few vehicles that can keep up, the occasional bike and only the fastest cars would have any chance at all. I still want to get out on the track with it but can't justify the cost (tires, leathers, more servicing and the possibility of damaging the bike.)

I still want to get out on the track with it but can't justify the cost (tires, leathers, more servicing and the possibility of damaging the bike.)
yeah that's fair enough, I don't mean to say that all riders of high powered sports bikes own them as status symbols, but it's always puzzled me a bit to see them slowly chug along with the rest of the traffic. it must get a bit boring not being able to get it out of second gear most of the time. it just seems a little overkill and not worth risking it to ride around the city. i understand the enjoyment and satisfaction of owning such a well oiled machine, though. at the end of the day, everyone has their own preferred style of riding, i just happen to enjoy getting a bike up into its powerband and through the gears

I bought a YZF600 whilst on my restricted and rode it, just never gave the cops a reason to have a look at me.

Just not legally, which is probably what he was getting at.

Dear OP, answer this question:
What will you regret more?
a) Getting a sensible LAMS bike cause Mr. "I-Am-The-Law" said so OR
b) Buying the bike you've always dreamed of, wetted bed for, and wanted, accepting the risk of consequences.
Really, there is no "correct" answer. Both have ups and downs. It's just sometimes you got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.

Grammatical question.
Is it 'a R6' or 'an R6'?
A R6 just sounds wrong... sounds like I'm saying "uh-uh 6".
To OP... insurance... what if (insert thieving and crashing etc)?

Will any insurer cover you to ride illegally? Say you hit a dog and crash, total write off. An insurer will look and see: warrant, yup. Warrantable condition? Yip. rider licenced? nope. claim denied.

"An R6" is correct.
"A Yamaha R6" would work.
"A R6" doesn't.
