View Full Version : Exhaust note

At the cemetary circuit on Boxing Day I was impressed with the exhaust note of one of the BSA B31's ... it sounded real sweet and was obviously tuned to perfection.

What bikes are out there, that you love to hear the sound of their exhaust ?

Not being one eyed here, but the sweet sound of a TL, VTR & Ducati are hard to beat. From idle to red line!, mate! Music to the ears!.

I like the sound of a duke, especially when you have a 996 crawling up your ass or when following one around the twisties they sound great, my other mate MO's VFR800 has an Arrow high rise, and when he blasted past me on Sunday, that sounds very nice.
But I the best would have to be the TL1000 r or s.:D

Nahh - a GSXR 600 through an Akrapovic system having its nuts hung out to dry is the sound for me - unless its the wailing banshee moan of a Honda 305 six .......will we ever hear its like again......?

apparently my GSXR750 (MIG shotgun on it) sounds awsome according to me mate Dave, who had me blasting past him at full noise.

Can't say I know what my bike sounds like as it sounds alot different when u r on the bike.

I'm a big fan of 1 litre V-twins. I've heard some Tl1000's sounding real sweet just idling past.

But I'd wager that V8 moto guzzi attending the classic bikes show (feb) at Pukekohe could sound pretty damn saucy too!

And speaking of exhausts...
me new zx-6r is a bit quiet for my tastes. The 250 could be heard from blocks away (and over the stereos of some sleepy drivers!) and I like the safety aspect as much as the vanity of a loud one. ( waddya expect from an acoustic engineer!?) :D

I can't seem to find any 2nd hand cans (in good nick)around tho. I don't really want to repipe the whole deal, just get a bigger can without having to pay the earth.
I talked to custom chambers yesterday but I am wondering if anyone here has some good leads on where I could look for new or 2nd hand cans?

cheers!:bigthumb:

Coldkiwi have you checked out Neptune mufflers, they are made in Wellington & are fairly new to the bike scene. I am looking at getting one for my ZX6 as well, are reasonably priced & they do have a web site

;) Never thought much of Honda exhausts but rode with a guy on a VTR with Two Brothers Racing cans and was that sweet! Almost as good/better than my Duke with Termis. My other Duke had arrows pipes and I think it sounded better than the Termis. Also try the net for prices, I get a lot of things over the web, so far much cheaper, faster and great service. Carbon end cans wouldn't weigh too much to ship but the whole system might make shipping expensive. Still doesn't hurt to check.:bigthumb:

theres nothing quite like the old honda singles (1978 XR500 motors) running just the 2 into 1 header :) or a megaphone muffler slapped on. now they are music to my ears :)

thanks guys.. I'll look at that

Bikerboy, I dunno about the VTR of your mate... but those termignoni's on your 996 are SWEEEET! A wonderful noise... I REALLY want a falco now!!! Thanks for the ear candy :)

I like the sound of my VTR with the racing Scorpians on - nice deep throaty rumble, and barking on shut throttle...

For those who came on the now infamous ride on Sunday, I would like to hear what you think as it DOES sound different when you are on it!

SPman
17th February 2003, 21:12
Yeah, its got a bit of a bark to it ... a harder edge - or it could just be the way you ride:)

I must admit I quite like the noisemine makes - particularly up in the rev range, but, as you said, they do sound different from the seat&nbsp;&nbsp; <IMG alt=Stoogie src="http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/images/smilies/monster28.gif" border=0> (javascript:smilie(':stoogie:'))

I've never heard a triumph duet.. but I've been subjected to a ZXR 250 duet (one DID can, one Vance and Hines).. You can ride in a locked formation within centrimetres&nbsp;of the same spot because the harmonised tones change quickly with any speed/gear differential! Quite a cool experience but reminds me of being buzzed by a swarm of mozzies!!

well lets see, i used to love the rumbles of a nice singles, twins never did it for me (not a big fan of helicopters landing), love 2 stroke screams.
Have to agree on the triples - the best sound so far (wot about a 2 stroke triple???)
Fours.....well.....they can sound winey, F1 style ring the guts out.....but when i found a ZXR, its exhaust is bridged, so it doesnt quite sound like a 4, twin or a rotary. And mine has a Laser Exhaust designed for a ZX9R, so its music to my ears
Sucks sitting at 100k, doin 6K revs (no more no less) going deaf - stupid harmonics :bash:

Man would be telling porkies if he did not admit to liking the sound of his own bike, so Guzzi on full noise or full over run, does it for me.
Trumpy Hurricane, now that is a totally different noise, have spent many an hour following one of these, magic sounds.

My Speed triple was great sounding but kept blowing up so have to listen to a full Ti system with genuine Tri oval Yosy Muffler on my 03 GSXR1000 life's tough but getting use to it with help from 165HP

I always had open pipes on my B31s,never used a muffler at all, although ran a slash cut with the M20.At one stage I was running some weird cams I never found the timings for with a megaphone, shit that was noisy, had the whole BaaaBaaaBaaaBaaaaaaa bit when you backed off,I couldn't get enough of the sound, but I don't think my neighbours were too impressed when I had an early start when doing shifts.

My XLV750 sounded glorious...to me,but apparently just sounded like a couple of XR250s to bystanders.

Gotta say,Tridents are the best sounding bike ever made - I always made my wife ride in front so I could listen to her bike....

Best bike I have EVER!!! heard? The MV's when Ago came over, you could hear those things all the way around Puke,a totaly animal sound, like nothing I've heard before - and Ago's shifts??,I've never heard anyone change gear like it.

This is going to sound crap but I always recall the sound of a redlined XJ550 with a 4 into1 screammming an ethereal wail. That’s all they are good for though.
A lot of people remark on my YZF with the V&H pipe.

I like my GasGas flat out.

Better still is a V Twin NSR500V. Sounds like 2 angry CR250s & man do they boogie.

Four into ones ALWAYS sound like you are ringing the bejeeezes out of them. In days gone by it was a sure way to attract Mr Plod and make him believe you MUST have been speeding. :argh:
Wonder how I know these things :apint:

Recently best sounding bike was the CBR600-wheeled XL500(!!!) run by a local bloke with straight-through pipe, whole bike was totally outrageous,it was on Ebay and I thought"neat" no-one bought it then I saw it on the road and I was kicking myself, overtook me a week later and I`m stil regretting not following the guy and asking "how much?"
Prior to that I saw a yoshi CB750 owned by a Persian(as they were known then) back in 1975.CB750 was hot-shit enough back then let alone 4-1(never even heard of them until then) and mag Wheels(truly exotic, think that far back they cost about the same as the bike)mind-blowing sound at the time. Then there was the guy on the GT750 Suzi with the race expansion chambers that did a "fly-by" of a local Kawasaki dealer`s open-day and had the un-divided attention of absolutely everyone, heard the bloody thing coming for about 2 minutes before he went a-holing past, not even close to legal.

Being an acoustic engineer you should know by definition that the correct term would be a wonderful 'sound'... :Pokey:

THESE BIKES ARE JUST PILES OF SHIT I HATE THE SOUND AND THE LOOK THEY SHOULD BE IN A MUSEUM NOT BEING RACED AND DROPPING OIL EVERY WHERE ON THE TRACK. I LIKE THE SOUND OF A V TWIN 1000 OR SCREAMING GSXR1000 WITH AKRAPOVIC OR YOSHI FULL SYSTEM AS LONG AS ITS NOT TOO LOUD

My brothers 124cube S&S powered twin cam.
HDs with straight pipes are just noisey, this thing has an S&S exhaust that makes it quiter then some possers straight piped bikes but when he starts it up it sounds like a big bore rifle shot, then it just sits there sounding nasty.
All petrol heads and even those that dislike American big twins just stop in their tracks. At full noise the sound is undescribable.
The bike is the proven second most powerfull road rego'ed big twin in NZ,I'd love to see/hear the #1.
I don't get on with this brother much but I bloody love his bike.

Hey Jackrat Know a guy here that has a 2.6L MP powered Harley/D has a Supertrap exhaust on it ,You cann't ride behind him as it's to loud . He brought it round to a friend's place one time & parked it in front of a ranchslider door at his place , when he went to leave after pushing in the decompression plug's in the heads so it would start to much compression to turn over for the starter ,when this thing fired up at about half throttle it broke the glass in the ranchslider's door . Fuck we laughed so hard the owner gave us the thumbs up & left a black line up the road for 2 lampposts . This bike owe's him just under $100,000 to much for a Harley.

Well, I'd be lying if I didn't say the sound of my gixxer with its yosh tri-oval screaming didn't do it for me, part of the attraction of the i-4. Otherwise (and I'm suprised no-one else has mentioned it) the sound of an RC30 on full noise is just beautiful. Camgears whirring, v-4 pumping, sheer aural beauty.
