Repairing and painting a Ducati fairing in Christchurch?

Took my RHS mid-fairing to Plastec in ChCh last week to weld a crack. The result is good for $40, and cheaper than ordering a Plastex repair kit from AU or US and doing it myself.

Now I need to get it painted and I've been given a quote for $180, but I'm on a budget and that is over it, especially for a 3" square patch. Granted, there is labour involved with colour-matching, prep, and all that but I don't want the whole panel repainted.

A co-worker has a spray kit he uses for painting his scale aircraft, so does anyone know a place to get a small pot of 473.101 Anniversary Red from? And will any clearcoat do, or do I need something special for plastic? 'cos the last thing I want is for it to crack when I put the panel back on. I believe the answer to that is many very thin coats.

There is a place in St Asaph st who will match your colour code, and put it in a spray bomb ready to use. Works well. Name escapes me sorry.

You seem to have a problem... on the one hand, you want a good job... on the other, you want to pay no money.

Your would be best to leave it alone until you can afford it, whatever you do will not match, not blend, and generally just look like arse. Having said that, Spray Store that SVboy mentions, will match a can to that panel. Make sure you get a can of their clear coat to go with it, the paint itself is not sufficient.

No. Not no money. Just not as much as that as this time. A situation that I dislike but have to live with. Gone are the days when I could maintain an exotic sports bike to the standard it requires.

While it is certainly not my first vehicle respray, if my own attempt comes out looking "like an arse" then I'll book it to be professionally done. No harm. No foul.

$180 to take what you have to finished is a very reasonable price. Take imdying's advice and wait till you can afford it.

Indeed, agreed. $180 to skim,match and blend into the surrounding panel is cheap as shit.
Maybe wrap it in a vinyl (matching on opposite side) until you can justify the $180.

No foul.Custom cans are around $20 a piece, a quality clear in a car is probably $15-20. You'll need a scotch pad to key the surface (another buck), plus a few sheets of sandpaper to finish it. You might as well just pocket the $40-50ish and wait till you're flush.

You'll be able to get some stickers from a bike store for nothing, that'll keep you going in the mean time :)

I paid the $180+GST. They repainted the entire panel, masking the decals as I don't have replacements. Not noticeable unless looking closely. Won't know if it's the "right red" until I put it back on the bike and see it in the sun.
