I have a set of ROX anti vibration risers.. yer need something.. as 4000rpm area is bad for vibration
and thats where the motor sits at 100kph...
Do yer know you can set some of the injection setting from the insturment panel.. theres also a rev counter in there
for setting idle.. plus the error codes for trouble shooting... if there a issue with the ignition or injection it will
show a error code to tell you where the prob is... you need the codes list...you can also change the TPS & O2 settings...
turn key/kill switch off...
hold down both buttons while turning the key on.... keep holding the buttons down till the dialog screen comes up..
" take note of the setting before yer change anything"
Turn key off & any new setting will be retained..
The system has preset values it will not go outside of... so yer can't do the motor in...

Havent noticed any vibrations yet but probably used to it after the ktm. Dont like how the bars sweep back so will maybe look at changing them one day - makes an awkward angle for the wrists

Get a set of Yamaha XTZ engine bars to protect the water pump...
they are around $300... Cheaper than a $1000 engine case.. "2nd hand bits are few & far between.."
Yamaha don't make them for the XTR so I had to cut up a set of XTZ ones..

Pass.......... I like my air filtered...Did notice the HP drop when I removed the stage 1 & 2 DNA filters... Be good on a XT660X motard thats only used on the road.. stage 1 & 2 DNA's can flow 9% more air than what the motor can suck at red line...

My xt660z 2010 with 23000 ks starts getting a bit noisy in the engine, but with arrow mufflers on i didn't notice straight away, but i did notice eventually. Horrible sound it was, sounded terminal. Did a google search and found a thread that a guy videoed his and the sound was exactly the same. He said its the nut on the primary drive ( end of crank ) so i strip it down and yes its loose, i pull clutch assembly apart and off and checked balance shaft (its fine ) put it all back together. Now to replace torn gasket. A very cheap fix. You need a torque wrench that will go up to 90 nm and a small one low as 9 nm. Do yourself a favour have a careful listen when your bike is idling if it don't sound sweet get it checked or do it yourself

Just pulled the rekluse clutch apart in the XTR... just to be nosey & put a heavyer set of springs in before the DB1K...
Being a WR450 unit the heavy springs surplyed with it didn't fit the XT.. So I have been useing the XT springs..
While it was apart I measured the friction plates... there is no measurable ware after 5000km..
both 3 plates that are omited when the rekluse unit is instaled & the plates in the clutch are between 2.9 / 3mm thick..
So that sort of makes the friction plate fiber getting in the oil & causeing big end issues look a bit suspect..
Theres no more friction plate ware than with the standard clutch it would seem..
Heavyer springs can only make it better as the Rekluse unit can only apply as much force as the springs
as the springs are what it works against..
Think I will up my 3000km oil/filter changes to 5000km & stay with the Motul 5100 oil... Stay with what seems to be working...

Bent rear break pedal couple small scrapes on r/h engine cover. Few we marks on tank and the grey cover by the tank done it's job taking the brunt of it. You can hardly notice any thing happened. yes thats the prob with the XT660... there so much weight in the motor it makes it
hard to lighten them any real amount... But thats why yer see reports of 140k first engine life...
The frame could never be said to be under built either..
Can't have everything I surpose... The weight kills performance...

Would it be to much to hope that AJP are going
to build us a new XT660R.... Now Yamaha are
going to stop production of the XTR...
PR7... PR700?

Holy crap, expensive! Something to be said for Carbs aye...:)
Maybe scout the ole net and look for a good used one from a wreck? eBay perhaps?

Did you run it out of fuel? Fuel is needed for cooling and lubrication. Main cause of fuel pump failure.
Anyway... I replaced the fuel pump in my Pegaso (same motor, but possibly different pump) at about 80,000km IIRC. I bought a pump off a wrecked F650GS for a good price. Many different pumps would work.
PM me and I'll dredge up a thread in the Pegaso forum.

yes it was low on fuel.. mines got 40,000k in it...
I pulled the yamaha in tank pump unit apart & found this little tiny pump hiden inside
75% of the unit is filter screen & fuel gauge sender and a still fuel chamber for it to work in..
A quick search tuned up just the pump on e-bay for $30nz shiped..
So Mr Yamaha can stick his $830 pump unit where the sun don't shine...
so now I wait..........
if it works ok... will get a spare one...

Hey guys, I am new to the riding bit and just bought an 05 Xt660x which I am loving so far. It even put a bit of a grin on the old man's face when we rode up to pick up his new superduke. Just thought I'd weigh in and say hi

yes thats the prob with the XT660... there so much weight in the motor it makes it
hard to lighten them any real amount... But thats why yer see reports of 140k first engine life...
The frame could never be said to be under built either..
Can't have everything I surpose... The weight kills performance...
The R/X is 170/180kgs & the Z at 209kgs.. none of them are really light..
sounds bullet proof, prefer this (reliable) versus lighter.
You guys have me interested........ more research required. like research.......
interestingly this was the first model I thought about choosing for my first bike. Was a bit intimidated when I went and looked at it the first time (so tall, I am 5'10)
so brought its smaller sibling Scorpio.
any comments versus DR650 and any other comparisons etc

If we compare it to the other 2 jap contenders KLR650 & DR650
KLR at the road end & the DR more at the dirt end I would put the XTR
somewhere in between them...
as I have said there real draw back is the weight... really kills there
performance.. the XT660 motor puts out more HP than the XR650R
but it's pushing so much more weight yer never know it..
seat hight... If you put a high pipe system on them you can lower
the bike 50mm & still have 10mm more ground clearance than with
the standard low twin pipe system
Heres a good site for everything XT660 R/X/Z
