Heard a wee story today... A genulmen with dual citizenship, fed up with the unwashed driving unregistered cars, of which there are many round here, scanned his out of date rego, tutued it to bring it upto date & stuck it in his windscreen. He is self employed & owns his home. What are the potential consequences should he get caught, have an accident etc?
Er, it's not me. I like to lie straight in bed at night, the hospital is just next door & every now & again I see a nice bit of tarmac which I may have contributed to.

he'll get bent over and fucked in the ass. first by the "justice" system, then by his new hispanic room mate, named kevin.
i'm guessing they'd do him on various kinds of fraud, using a document to obtain pecuniary advantage, falsifying legal document, failing to display valid evidence of rego, being a cheeky cunt, rorting the system, not paying his dues to society...

pretending to be a legal c*nt is probably worse than saying "ftp yo" and ignoring the c*nts.

Yes, I figured he would be buggered if caught or involved in an accident or when he decides to sell his nice car. Being buggered would probably spoil his holiday options, no? The more I think about it, the greater the buggery. No doubt bugger his business credibility, too. Quick check & fraud pops up. Oops. Buggered again.

oh no, its well worth doing. You just have to know the whyfore.
Look out for a white commy with the confederated tribes flag instead of plates.

In all seriousness, on KB terms, this guy is a mate, a smart arse admittedly but... No doubt this is a knee jerk reaction on his part, "if they can, I can" etc.
Fraud is a criminal offence, yeah? Goes on record. He renews his "other" passport, European, it will come up?
In an accident, if somebody is hurt, will ACC chase him to recover costs?
I'm just wondering if the consequences of his actions are worth me having a word in his selective shell like or not. I think it's dumb. A smack on the wrist & a fine is one thing, chastening, but having a serious criminal record something else entirely.

depends on his whyfore, and any situ he finds hisself in.
The cops wont tell you, but a crime requires an injured party.
Yes, as the average yob, if shtf, he'll likely be listed as maori. Or undesirable.
Depending how it plays out, it may be a bit of lawyer chortle and laa dee da, but if they decide to make an example of him....

It is an offence under the Land Transport (Motor Vehicle Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2011, Clause 85 (http://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/2011/0079/latest/DLM2938442.html) (1b is moving, 2b is stationary)
And it carries a fine (for an individual) of $100 for a moving offence or $200 for a stationary offence under Schedule 6 of the same regulations (http://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/2011/0079/latest/whole.html#DLM2938492)
Of course if they try to convict you for it, you would get a penalty of up to $1000. But that would cost them a lot of money in lawyers fees etc obviously so is less likely. They'd have to find you first? :headbang:

Well, deception is a $1000 fine, thank you. But is it deception or fraud?
Deception could be as simple as obscuring part of the rego. A fake, yeah, deceptive, but where is the line which separates that from fraud? He has deliberately produced a sticker to avoid payment.
Oh, he's very easy to find. Straight as, generally.

Shit, I can do this, too. 2 bikes, 3 cars, I like chips. $1000 fine, can't afford a holiday. 2 years at least before I see the wig? Laughing.

'round this way, he'd have to never drive on the gorge. The new speed camera is apparently a plate scanner too.
(Camera doesn't care about the fake "sticker" of course, just sees the plate and looks it up.)
Would be seriously annoying to always have to go the long way.
They have cameras like that anywhere near him?

Yes, he would have to put his rego on hold to avoid the vehicle being de-registered which would add to the legal problems

Good on him for doing it but unless these people had those unsavory files somewhere where you can't avoid seeing it, it's a breach of ethics, which they are quite big on in the IT industry.

This altering the rego label in really not a good idea. As previously stated rego plates expire after a time if not on hold. It may pass a casual visual inspection, maybe, but not if a data base is searched if stopped by the cops for any reason. Insurance, forget it. Not only will he get the usual "using an unregistered" ticket he is in the gun for a fraud charge. "altering a document to gain an advantage" That's Crimes Act, punishable with a little bit more the wet bus ticket slap.
These labels have an issue date ( and time) on them on the right hand side, and a bar code for scanning. Very hard to mess with them successfully. Why, because its Government tax and revenue. Those departments have astounding search and seizure powers available to them and the penalties are risk prohibitively harsh.
Its not if but when he gets his arse kicked.

Well and truly mate.
As pointed out having a false sticker is going to carry some heavy shit compered to just not being registered.
Personally I wouldn't worry about fines and such because they amount to fuck all anyway, but the possible insurance issues would be a major problem to anybody that was self employed.
Having two passports,I have a friend that is wanted in NZ but he has an NZ passport in his legal name, plus an Australian one in his mothers maiden name so he travels in and out of NZ on the Aussie one,but I do believe that loop hole is going to slam shut very soon,,,,,,so get in while you can I guess.

Short term 'solution'.
Rego stickers are almost obsolete over here.
Plate Scanners do the job now.
Won't be too long over there.
Every time I've been pulled over my numbers have been run through the computer in the plod car anyway.
This would only make matters much worse.

If some haxxor pwns their computer, then it serves them right for not having a properly configured firewall.

Just try a good port scanner....Softperfect Network Scanner is good as it finds open SMB shares and tests the permissions for you. DAMHIK.

It already seems wrong that you need a WOF to get a new license, but you still have to have both the WOF - and - the rego on your vehicle.
Daft.
(I realise the periods of validity don't always line up well, but it still seems a kind of overkill that could be tidied up.)

You have absolutely nailed it. One person steals from another, as long as the thief is a member of the perpetual victim/grievance classes, not even the proverbial wet bus ticket slap will get administered. One person steals from the government, and the thief is not a member of the perpetual victim/grievance classes, the government is unforgiving and its minions relentless. As the sticker says, "don't steal, the government hates competition".
