View Full Version : Note from police in letter box

How nice, I got a leaflet in the mail today from the police.
"COMING... READY OR NOT.
We're targeting drink drivers in your area. So, with more unmarked Police cars on the road, you could be stopped anywhere.
MORE UNMARKED POLICE CARS ARE ON THE ROAD TO GET DRINK DRIVERS OFF IT."
How nice of them to explain why I've seen at least half a dozen mufti vehicles in the region in the past week or two. Bit of a waste of money to send out warnings like this if you ask me - those who drink drive will ignore it, and it won't make any difference to the behaviour of those of us who don't.

Not much point. I only get grinning, greased and gased 1-2 times per year these days. Which reminds me, I'm about due to go and do it again :devil2:

My thoughts are that it is a way of justifying the amount of muftis they've got on the road busting Mrs Jones for 111km/h on the Raumati straights... "Well we had all the coppers around to look out for drunk drivers, and in the process we came across this flipping lunatic housewife trying to kill people... so we booked her for 111km/h."

I agree with the points made by Hondacmx450. If you drink and then drive/ride you won't get any sympathy from me. Drink as much as you like, then get a cab or a sober driver and stay safe.
Beemer is also right on the nail in stating that those who drink/drive regularly will not take any notice of these flyers.

Why don't they just post a cop out side the pubs at and test anyone who goes out of the pub and tries to leave the carpark.
That way they won't even get on the road.
AND they can save a lot of money in cars and the speed guns needed to catch the dickheads they let loose in the first place.

Don't they do that already where you live? They do something very close to that here, and they do it in Blenheim too 'cause I was in the car. (Happily the drivers passed the tests in both of the instances I 'm referring to.)

Does that not imply that they are accusing you of being a drink driver ?

Yeah, I took it a bit that way too, sort of "watch out, we're out to get YOU!" I don't drink and drive - no desire to be stupid, and my husband doesn't drink so I always have a sober driver with me.
I don't believe in warnings, if you get pulled over and you have been drinking, you deserve to have the book thrown at you. Unfortunately the ones this campaign is aimed at won't give a toss about how many mufti cops are on the road, specifically out to get THEM - they probably already know how to get home without using any of the roads the police have their check points on.
Good idea to have them outside pubs, but considering many people drink at restaurants (and some pack away a bottle or two during dinner), it would be hard to target all the offenders. Even if they made it a zero limit, some people would STILL drink and drive.

Unmarked cars to "stop drink drivers" - that's a Tui ad mate.
Is it because they're planning on catching drink drivers by blending in to the traffick and purely just looking for cars that are swerving all over the road? Surely our policing isn't that bad yet? That's the only explanation that I can work out as to why the cars need to be mufti ones. So to be pulled over, does a driver need to be driving to such an extent that it's really obvious by their driving that they're drunk? If so, mufti cars might make sense (apart from the fact that if someone's that drunk they might not notice a marked car so quickly anyway), but I would have thought only quite a small proportion of drunk drivers would be caught by their dodgey antics as opposed to breath checks. Not the most efficient way to do it anyway. I wonder how they're going to pay for such an inefficient scheme? Hmmmm - I guess there's no need to state the obvious.

I hadn't even thought of that, perhaps they are going to use the mufti cars to follow people they suspect have been drinking? Will the officers be in mufti as well? If so, would YOU stop?
The problem is, many people who have been drinking are often extremely cautious when driving, not wanting to attract attention - so how are they going to tell the difference between a drunk driver and someone who is just naturally timid?
The more I think about it, the more I wonder how they are going to use the mufti cars. Perhaps a cop in the know could enlighten us, without giving the game away, so to speak!

Ah feck, EVERY car I stop I test the driver for Excess Breath Alcohol.
No exceptions!!
No slack cut for those that give a "Fail General" on the 'sniffer'.

All the things that have been in the paper that Ive been involved in have been totally manipulated. Turns the whole story into a total load of cobblers. I reckon what we read in the papers are light propaganda and to be taken with a grain of salt

ways around that too though... get a sober mate to stagger out of the pub and weave along the road.. when he blows a 0%.. he can explain to the copper that he is " Designated Decoy"

Yet another way the Nz government are using to spend all our money.... DAMMIT! If you going to drink and the cops do catch you, you're lucky they did before a tree or something else did... As for telling us that unmarked cars will be around is that not the point of them? so that we are unaware of their presence? makes good proper sense to me  . Still i suppose it's the thought that counts.

Well, if I was a cop, I reckon I would park the mufti a short distance away from the pub, close enough for me to see who is leaving but not so close that drunks would notice a cop sitting in the drivers seat, there by alerting them to the presence of the filth. Then I would simply start picking off the drunks as they left the pub, couldn't do that with a marked car.

More simply get someone to park or just stand opposite the car park, and radio the details of cars leaving for marked cars to stop. Don't see any objection to such tactics m'self. Leaving pub = implied likelihood of having been drinking. Only question is how much. Moderate drinkers will pass test , topers won't. All good.

Becauase of a lot of people go to have a meal and a social drink. Moderate intake, or a non drinking driver. Bit tough if you couldn't ferry granny and the grandkids down to the pub for lunch on her birthday ?

Hypothetically speaking of course.
I guess that sounds semi-plausable. Do you reckon that's actually the reasoning behind it though that's going to be put into practice?

It is not a crime to stagger when you walk. If they draw the incorrect conclusions...
Remember the main rule when dealing with the cops, especially if you are a naughty boy. Keep your mouth shu - don't make it easy for them to bury you

Actually I think I have seen it claimed that those who are well over the limit have very seldom gotten so at a licensed public house.
The landlords nowdays have concern for their licenses.
'Tis much more likely that they got tanked up at a party, or their home, or some mates house. Or just beach/park whatever.
Bound to be exceptions , of course.

Well, if I was a cop...
You should apply. I get a feeling that you've got what it takes...
I think it's a good idea to post the leaflets. If it keeps one selfish bastard off the road so that he doesn't possibly kill or injure an innocent person then it's money well spent IMO.
Isn't prevention better than cure?
