Greetings,
Get Routed are shipping my bike (2010 Ducati Multistrada), from Sydney across the ditch to Christchurch where I will be picking it upon the 17th of Feb, and will spend 3 glorious weeks touring around your country.

So I'm looking to work out some sort of Itinerary. I'm hoping to do all the best roads, best pubs and look all the neat stuff I have seen on on other peoples postcards back home.

I will be travelling alone, so happy to have anyone who wants to show me around their part of NZ along and they can tell me their best aussie jokes.

P.S. Commiserations on the america's cup. I got confused and thought you were racing us on account of all the aussie accents on board oracle. Turns out, they only had 2 yanks on the boat. Ahh well at least you can look at the bledisloe cup :pinch:

I missed Baldwin Street when I was in Dunedin. I'm improving though, the last two times I managed to miss Dunedin completely.

There are some brilliant roads in the South Island, if you do a big figure eight you can get to ride all the passes. Canterbury generally isn't wonderful but the inland scenic route is OK, and Akaroa can be a great place to eat fish and chips by the water. The West Coast south of Greymouth is magic.

Karamea is worth a look too, as is Takaka. Although I'm talking about the roads rather than the destinations.

In the North Island SH43 Stratford to Taumarunui is a treat, as is the Gentle Annie between Taihape and Hastings. If it's not a holiday period the Coromandel and the Sea Bird Coast up the western side of the Firth of Thames are good rides.

See if you can buy a copy of the NZ Motorcycle Atlas, it shows the good bike roads.

If you are going to use the ferry there are hints on what you need in multiple threads in the touring forum.

Enjoy.

Thank you for the offer kinger, but I think I might buy my own so I can make notes in it and plan a future trip (I dont think I will get to see everything I want to on this trip).

All these references to balwin street make me think that it would be a good place to get a photographic momento (albeit an expensive one) of my trip to NZ.

Thanks for the suggestions guys I have noted them down and will incorporate them into the planning of my trip.

Three weeks is not really long enough to see most of what the South island has to offer in the way of good roads, good pubs and great people, but your still going to enjoy what you do get to see.

The North island is much the same as far as time frames go,you really need a bit more, but again you will see some good stuff and meet some good people.

So good luck and take care mate.

No worries about the Americas cup, those guys were on an up hill battle from day one and did pretty bloody good in my book.

National Ducati Rally is in Hammer Springs from 14 - 16 March

Extend your trip and come along. Warren lee from Ducati Au will be there as well and so will Paul Smart. Will definitely be worth it. More info here:

I would probably be able to meet up for a bit of the ride to see some of the sights in the Christchurch area, maybe a ride to Akaroa, I may even organise for a few others to come out too.

Just PM me closer to the time you make it over and let me know if there is anything specific you want to see.

Thanks for the welcome FF and no, apparently there was not enough interest from melbourne alone so get routed are shipping bikes from all along the east coast of Australia from sydney (fair enough I guess). Im getting pretty excited about it and will be trying out my new camping setup this weekend at the holy isle (phillip island) for motoGP. :bleh::bleh:

One of the guys on another forum has a house on said holy isle which has been dubbed 'Turn 13'. We all pitch tents on his front and back lawn.

Mushu, sounds like a plan...... I will be in touch.

There is a group of us heading to Phillip Island this weekend. We will also attend the National Ducati Rally next year. PM me if you want to hook up for a beer.

bugger Jafasaffa, sorry I missed you guys.

I went to the travel agents the other day and picked me up a nice thick travel brochure on NewZealand. Geez you guys have some great stuff over there.

In other news I managed to find myself a Job, and they wont want me starting there, doing a couple of months, then pissing off for a month so I will do 2 weeks on the south island and come back to do the other half next time.

SO, with the aid of googly maps I have been working out an itinerary that will take in all the sights I wanna see and stuff I wanna do.

check it out (http://bit.ly/17SWadS)

I will be stopping in Omarama to do some gliding (I wanna catch me some wave lift)
Te-Anau, to do an overnight cruise on milford sound
Queenstown, just to spend a day lookin at stuff
Franz Josef Glacier, gonna spend a day there.
Hamner springs to check out the thermal pools
Nelson, my base while I check out the wine region.

Then finally I will return to queenstown via kaikoura to check out some whales.

Got any other suggestions as to what I can see/do?

any other 'must do' roads while I am in the area ?

Cheers

Looks good, a couple of comments though:

Hwy 1 from Chch to Ashburton is about the only boring bit of road on the island. Take the inland route 72.

If you can fit in a 1/2 day side trip from Nelson to Takaka/Golden Bay do it - the road over the hill is fully sik ;) Another sweet in-'n-out is up to Karamea on the West Coast, do it if you have time.

Unless there's stuff you specifically want to see in Dunedin I'd consider leaving it out & including more inland roads like the Lindis pass, Mt Cook, Hwy 6 along lake Wakatipu.

If the Multistrudel can deal with some cruisy gravel roads, the Braeburn & Maruia Saddle tracks around Nelson lakes, Danseys Pass & the Molesworth could all fit into your loop too.

Cheers
Clint

Thanks for the tip Clint640, I will be sure to include them.

Bike has been collected, sent to sydney and is due to be loaded into a container tomorrow.

How stupid is this though, I have just found out that the ozzy gumbyment is going to charge me $50 to reimport my own motorcycle which has the appropriate compliance plates and has been registered here for the last 3 years..... WTF man !

17 days to go till I'm in NZL and 20 until I pick up the multistrudle

not that anyones counting......

heh if your gonna complain about a $50 fee your in for a surprise in NZ.
MAF will probably hit you with a couple of hundy fee just to let the bike in after inspection.

Just plot a bit loop and plan your service stations. Generally if you can get gas you can find somewhere to eat/sleep. Doesn't matter where you go its all good.

Yeah, I hear it is a bit like that.....

I was at the the international historic challenge on the island last weekend where I saw an old riding mate. She tells me that the place is frickin jaw dropping everywhere you go and its hard to go anywhere cause you're always stopping every 10 minutes or so.

I have revised the plan a bit. I will be stopping queenstown, greymouth, nelson and back to christchurch 3 days each with a couple of days up my sleeve. The idea is to camp for the 3 days and ride all the roads I can while I am sight seeing. Having the bike unloaded means that I can 'enjoy' the roads a little better than I could otherwise.

Better than the $200 for warrant and rego is the 15% duty which I have to pay to make sure the government gets it cut if I decide to sell my bike while I am over there. ON my multi, this equates to a bit over $2500 !

Its a good thing they are going to refund it when the bike is shipped back to the land of OZ.
