View Full Version : Got a new bike, well new to me, a Suzuki A50!

So i now have a rather sad late 60s Suzuki A50. I have seen that just about all the parts i need can be found on E-Bay However i have a few problems that i figur you guys will know the most about.

1) What sort of spark plug should it have? I need to clean the plug most times i let it sit for a bit after running it. The current plug is rather old and rubbish looking so will get a new one...
2) How do i adjust oiling amounts? Due to the amount of smoke etc it is producing (and the state of the sparkplug) Id say it is over oiling. Any tips for getting it right?
3) Any power upgrades that arnt too hard on the engine? (IE bigger carburetor etc?) I would like to get a few performance ideas before i take it bucket racing :) At some point in the future...
4)Seems that the exhaust slide valve isnt sealing very well with some exhaust gas coming out through the carburetor inlet after the engine is stopped, is this a sign of overheating in the past and is it adjustable?

remove oiler and run premix in the tank at around 30 to 1 for starters

Dosnt the oiler introduce oil in a more important part of the engine? Like the rg150 bikes? Thanks

An AC50 was my first bucket racer a looooong time ago.

The standard ignition is very basic and severely limits things. It has an iron cylinder which gets hot dropping power. They handle REAL bad and with the skinny 18" rims you are stuck for tyres. The front suspension is more basic than basic. I only ever ran premix and it wasn't a problem and the bike was reasonably quick. The only quicker 50 I came up against was Pete Sales land speed record GT50. The gearbox is crap as well. I'm sounding pretty negative but in fact I really enjoyed my AC50, but I had done about everything to it that you could.

My advice is to bring it to bucket racing and give everyone a good laugh. I certainly would not spend money on it as there are too many limitations to get even moderately quick nowadays.

If you are really desperate to do something they respond well to later closing of the disc valve. The two little boost ports can be filed out to make a single bigger one and that works as well. The ignition will hold you back at every step. I made my own battery powered, points triggered, CDI which solved a lot of problems.

Hi McDuck glad to hear you have an AC50, I think they are great. When they were in the shops new, I brought a green one like this and would love a project, if you get bored with yours please PM me.

In the meantime bring it along to Buckets, the 50 class is quite open at the moment and there is plenty of room for a bit of fun.

Is there any difference between an a50 and an ac50? Looking at it i might restore it, i like the shape and there arnt many left :)

Restoring it, would be good.

I am not sure now what the difference between an A50 and AC50 was, but as I remember it, there was a High Pipe and Low Pipe version, so maybe thats it.

Yeah had one that was to be my first bucket (was one before I got it). Never made it to the track I sold it on & got an MB50 as it was much better as a racer. But that was outclassed by the new RG50s that had come out.

Do a light resto on it & sell it on. Buy another bike as a bucket, you'll never have as much fun on a bike, but the A50 isn't going to cut it for handling & tyres.
