View Full Version : Suzuku RGV150 - Learner
Jackpot
2nd October 2013, 18:54
Hi again,
Just today a 'Suzuku RGV150 (1999)' popped up on TradeMe for $2200. From what I have read previously this is a rather popular bike, even if it is for bucket racing(?). - http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-645982524.htm
Is anyone able to offer some advice or opinion of this possible purchase for a first bike please. I am hesistant considering it is TradeMe and I have little to no idea about motorbikes maintence/parts/what to look for. The sticky above is helpful but I'm sure experience goes further than "reading it on the internet".
I do think it looks in some rather good nick.
Thanks
Edit: Additional Info -
Bike within expected budget as I do not have gear beyond a borrowed helmet
Primary use - travel between Lower Hutt & Wellington for full time job, learning, weekend fun

RG150 is for bucket racing. Water cooled and faster.
RGV150 is air cooled and slower.

Thats bordering on RGV250 prices, for that price you could find something much better.
Any reason youre not looking at bigger bikes?

I think its good to get some honest opinions from a variety of bikes.
I am honestly open to most/any bikes. Long as they are LAMS approved - got to please Mr. Plod
I do like the look of GN250 but some opinions are off putting. One of my main concerns is being suckered by a silver tongued seller/salesman who know that I'm going in blind.
Thanks for the advice/help so far

The rules have changed regarding the bikes you can ride on your learners:
http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/getting/motorcycles/approved-motorcycles.html
You can ride a bike up to 660cc IF its approved for learners. The list is in that link, have look through and see if you can find any in your price range on TM

Don't buy it, even for $500, it's shit and it will blow up!
An RG150 is a better bet but still a minefield, if you are prepared to learn and put a bit of brains and effort in they can be great bikes but most people aren't.
If you just want a shitty learner commuter buy a cheap Scorpio or something.

No.
Neither bike is eligible for buckets as they come.
Mods can be done but it's very far from simple.
Both can be run in what used to be 150 Streetstock and is now run as Development in the local (To Wellington, mostly Manfeild) race series.
Perhaps sil3nce is a better option if you don't know what you are talking about.
