View Full Version : $79 Helmets

I can hear the naysayers '$10 helmet for a $10 head' already - but considering some of the shitters that I've seen hanging off motorcycles lately....some have been dropped 3 or 4 times or were new in 1975. One of these would have to be safer.
These have European approval (no not dot) but for 79 bucks....a spare, an occasional pillion, one for the office 'just in case'. Or if you are riding around in an ill fitting Bell that grandad gave you....They look OK too.
Lou can get/has them I'm told.

Indeed. Why is it that helmet sellers always overlook this reality...

I know what you're saying, but NO. Ask anyone who has seen my helmet, after my last accident. The only reason I'm alive is that my helmet did it's job. I paid about $650 for mine so it was only midrange, as some go for over $1000 now.
Had I been wearing my first helmet (a much cheaper helmet), I probably would be dead now. I had a small area of temporary "damage" that left me with double vision constantly. LUCKILY it suddenly went away a little while back.
Please people, don't buy a bike till you can afford decent gear (even for the occasional pillion)

Cheapskate! - mine retails for $1,350 so i know what you are saying - but the reality is there are kids riding round in things that are un-safer than these.

Not sure if I said this somewhere else already but a friend of mine went to buy a helmet for use with a speedway car. He assumed he needed a Bell. He was advised that once the helmet contains a recognised safety standard that's it. Other helmets may be quieter, they may be more comfortable, you may prefer to pay for a fancy name, or for a fancy paint job, but the extra cash really doesn't buy any additional safety.
In consequence he bought a more modestly priced helmet and a second-hand flame proof driving suit for similar money to what he would have paid for just the Bell.

Do the XR1000 and Raid share a visor?
And the XXL won't be on no boat. It will be buried in a shed in Japan somewhere, if they ever made one. Sob...

This is my layout for placement in the mags that come out this time NEXT month. So please KBers don't go and ask for one over the counter tomorrow - they are still on a boat somewhere and i'll get shite for spillin' the beans.
The diabolic looks 'smart'.
IM GOING TO GET ONE OF THESE SHOEIS , IM GOING TO MOTOMAIL AND SAY BIG DAVE SAID GIVE ME ONE CHEAP OR ELSE.
DONT KNOW IF ILL GET ANOTHER ARAI , THOSE STUPID SIDE PODS THAT COVER THE VISOR ARE NOISY , I ALMOST PULLED OUT OF A RACE CAUSE WHEN THE WIND CAUGHT IT AT A CERTAIN ANGLE AT 260 KPH PLUS IT WOULD MAKE A BUZZING SOUND AND I THOUGHT I HAD LOST A BEARING TILL I PUT MY HAND ON THE SIDE POD

That's cool - it's all bullshit anyway.
The Bayliss Arai is a nice looking hat. big Aussie flag on it. You'd look good in it - on your scooter on the freeway. :devil2:

A fair melon it is. Mostly bone, I suspect. And even the XXL requires a bit of strategic internal compression with an icecream scoop to get it fitting just right! And I am constantly amazed that no other helmet manufacturer makes something that will accommodate the "fuller-headed gent". Even Mr "Money-no-object" BMW. Bless you, Shoei-san.
And isn't Whites website a useless POS?

My work, but yes it needs more content. It's 3 years old and was done to a Budget.
And What else can I do with it? - I got links to their manufacturers sites and they are going to publish price list etc on it themselves eventually.
But yeah, I'm just getting motomail's new look sorted then white's will get a massage.

It's good to hear your double vision has gone. :)
Just wanted to say that.
I don't feel like getting into any helmet debate...

Prolly noisey over 80km though. I'd get one for a spare if it was all I could afford. I grew up on motorstar/ffm helmets and I think that they where total dungas. However if I was needing to replace my helmet or get one for a lady, then I'd be going out and getting something good. I saw the doctor's replica on trade me. Awesome helment, but would look bloody silly on me on my CB :devil2:

There is an article on one of the threads that is all about helmets and the ratings etc, the gist of it was that some of the "better" standards could withstand harder impacts but they were at a level where the head and helmet wouldn't have a body to be friends with anymore. The downside of this is that to with stand impacts that were unlikely to be encountered or survivable with any helmet even if it survived is that lesser, more common impacts weren't dampened enough because the padding was made to last under far greater pressure. Afetre reading that report and some others it seems that the most reasonable sandard is the european ece r 22-05. It also said that any undamaged helmet was better than the best helmet with all the dampening already compacted. That makes sense to me as a helmet really is a deceleration device.
