Who was into the Punk scene when it was... favourable?
Discussed over a few drink a couple of weeks ago was.. music in our teens and how we got there. Was never my kind of music, I guess it was the association or perceived wankers that went for it in my view. Turns out, that is not so, when those at the table of drinks expressed their love for the genre' but not the dress code.

I was more Deep Purple/Eagles/Jethro Tull (after the beach boys and Simon & Garfunkel were pushed aside) Never really got that whole Zepplin thing but I did own their last studio album 'In through the out door'

1977 I was introduced to Kiss and that was it for the next decade, but Punk never registered as anything more than uncontrolled noise to me.

I went to a few early Punk gigs. The Saints in Oxford Street. Radio Birdman at Coogee. Bought some vinyl too.

I was never angry enough to be a Punk though. Nice bikes will do that.

Although I was into Zepplin when they were the Yardbirds.

I was into it reasonably big time, as were two of my best mates. But here in Welly...it wasn't so much the punks that were angry but the local skinheads and the street kids. Lots and lots of fights/brawls with those fuckers!

I Loved the Clash, The Dammed - I had a ripped T-Shirt with The Clash spray painted on it ...

I started with Led Zep (Zep III was first album I ever bought) and Deep Purple ... I had Aqualung (J/T) but that was all ...

Then The Clash turned up - stunning ... so I was a punk - in CHCH in the late 1970s ..

Was never really into the music but did spend a bit of time at the boot girls bar off Symonds st.

Could be an odd place at times, bikers at one end, skin heads and real punks at the other,a few white power wankers that never lasted due to the odd Maori content that would look at them an scare them into fucking off else where.

It always looked a place that could get violent very quickly, but it never did.

I always liked the punks because of their great dress sense and some of the hair cuts that went with it.

I mean what can you say about a rooster with a safty pin through it's nose,,fuckin' awesome bro,

They were unique at the time and though their music wasn't thaaaaaaaaat great, they had the whole package going on there for 10 years or so. But I never walked around with face paint (ok, platform shoes were allowed in the 70's) unlike some of those who followed punk where nose rings/chains were the norm. Was Adam Ant punk?

not the Adam Ant you mean (White wedding). but he was a punk in the London scene. He was in a band with Tony James and I think Jah Wobble at one point. And he might have been in the London SS band too?

it was a very incestuous scene.

in fact here is a wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Ant

A lot of bikers are punks in my eyes due too their fuck the norm attitude, and I have always been into both. Punk was when music went wrong for me, I was into progressive rock like Deep purple, Led Zep, Jethro Tull, Lou Reed and Alice Cooper. When punk came along, and then that shit the came out in the '80's, I started exploring other music - went back to '50's and 60's music, jazz, harmony groups and also got into classical stuff too. I haven't followed modern music since punk, still exploring music history. Parallels my motorcycle tastes too - once I lost the British stuff I never really went forward, just couldn't encompass Jap shit into my life.

Got into Punk and OI from a young age, just loved the abrasiveness of it all, and hated the shitty commercial music, so punk was the ultimate 'fuck that' and 'fuck off' to that scene.

Got more into the Skin side of it, proper Skins though, not those Nazi white power fuckers.

Punk actually started in the 70's really. There were some amazing sentiments expressed by the punk movement. I embraced most Punk music. It was raw and challenging. Some of it was dark, and some very dark behaviour was associated with it. Meh. Lots of it made huge social comments and really deserved to be heard. Just like the RnR of the 60's, wound up many, my Father banned it from the house due to those long haired louts! I am talking Beatles long hair here ( he was strictly "short back and sides"), some of the protest music of the 60's also turned many away due to content.

If you look at lyrics and styles over the years, the ones that stand out, begin as a water shed for some peoples taste. I love music. I am a big fan, and have a huge genre appreciation. I have to admit there are a few that I have and do struggle with, but on the whole, I am moving forward with it, and what the amazing talents we have are producing right now.

Look at Sir Bob Geldolf. Boom Town Rats - Punk Band. How can you take that away!

Sorry I made a typo, but that doesn't change that the '80's came after punk. I had to find my own way after dissatisfaction with modern music.

Ive always been dissatisfied with popular dreck. Having said that I really like that Lorde song "Royals" Its popular but not dreck.

It took me a long time to appreciate that some music that is really popular is also really good. For example, (a fair bit of) Pink Floyd. For 20 odd years I was with John Lydon (who famously wore an I HATE Pink Floyd T shirt) but actually they arent bad. Well some of it is. Or Fleetwood Mac. (the popular era not the Peter Green-led predecessor. Or the Eagles. [insert THE BIG LEBOWSKI joke].

The "punk" thing became a straitjacket. Then a joke. Whoever put up that terrible song about Poseurs or a lot of those 80's punk bands that are just terrible. And don't get me started on bands like NOFX and Green Day.

The first "post-punk" album is The Clash's "London CAlling" and on their first album they included covers of two complete ska classics: Junior Murvin's "Police and Theives" and Toots and the Maytals "Pressure Drop"

Punk actually started in the 70's really.

Punk!

Arguably it started with bands like the MC5 and The Stooges and a lot of the "garage" bands of the '60's: The East Coast of the US particularly. The genesis of the scene was in New York City and centred around The Velvet Underground. Well actually they were kind of a house band at Andy Warhol's factory, but thats not relevant for present purposes. So you get all the aggression, all the anger, all the attitude and some raw songwriting.

I am a massive fan of The Velvet Underground in particular but if you dont own them you should pick up records by these "proto-punk" bands. There is an MC5 "Best of" that is good (you have to love a record that starts with a man SCREAMING "Its time to kick out the jams, motherfuckers....." pretty confronting in, what, 1968? Particulary when on the left coast its (supposedly) all fucking hippies and flowers in their hair and all that shit. And everyone should own Iggy and the Stooges "Raw Power" (I'm a street walking cheetah with a heart full of naplam" I mean, come on!). And while you're at it, grab the NUGGETS collection put together by Lenny Kaye: its just been reissued and its really good. And the near-definitive Velvets collection is the "Peel Slowly and See" boxset. After the Velvets imploded in 1971-ish, the NY underground scene spawned bands like the New York Dolls. EVERY hair metal band in the world is ripping off the dolls. Youtube up some footage. Plus they were decent songwriters. That was an early scene centred on the Mercer ARts Centre. It fell down. As in collapsed one day. Slightly later (1974/75) you get the CBGB's scene: which produced Talking Heads, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie, Television and a host of lesser known bands. And birthed electronic music (check out a band called Suicide which is two dudes and two keyboards and a lot of violence. In like 1975.

The connection with UK punk is that at one point Malcolm McLaren managed the Dolls and they toured in the UK. And so did the Ramones (who famously hated it). The things that defined punk music, and made it great were fairly clearly cross pollinated into the UK from that US scene: in particular the I do not give a fuck attitude, the I will do it myself ethos, and the intense fan loyalty. Not to mention the indifference of most music fans and the antipathy of the rock establishment and the establishment generally. If you listen to bootlegs of early Pistols shows for example they were a pretty tight, decent band.

But something that intense does not last long and by 1977 it was pretty much all over, just as the caricatures and public caught on. The people involved (and maybe the fans) kept their ideals (DIY, I dont care if you dont like it, and moved on to other things).

The best punk song since "God Save the Queen" in my view is "Killing in the name of" by Rage Against the Machine.

I get sick of the whole " the first punk band was" and having to put a label on everything. Like when people have to argue the difference between ska and reggae and dub and dubstep and skiffle etc etc. It kinda sucks the fun really.
Getting back to the subject, john lydon has actually done some good music both solo and with Sex Pistols. He is a prat tho. I saw a few punk bands or bands from that era in the 90's in london, like Stiff Little Fingers, the Stranglers, Van Halen, Living Colour, Feckin Ejits( I was mates with the paki bass player) and some others.
I highly rate The Ramones Iggy Pop and SLF.
Modernwise you can't go past the Living End for class!

Were The Ramones punk? Or Television? Or Talking Heads? Or Blondie?

I found it pretty hard to fit a mohawk under a helmet - so I guess I that makes me more Biker than Punk - but here's my take on Henry's questions...

A: Yes - Pretty much the American prototypes

B: Who?

C: No - they were/are many genres, but I dont think any of them could be called punk. Bryne might have been a prototype rapper though, check out "My Life In the Bush of Ghosts"

D: No - far too commercially / pop oriented

Next question: Who was the best Ska band?

To my way of thinking Punk was a genre that spawned a lot of fresh music and closed down the era of pompous prog rock. The Specials absolutely no question. They still *are* the best Ska band...but I do like Madness a lot too and the fact they've continued to evolve and make new music. Arguably "Liberty of Norton Folgate" isn't Ska anymore, and certainly a number of my fellow scooterists were disappointed by it, but I think it's a fantastic album makes me a bit homesick for London even though I never really liked living there.

You can't pick a single place where Punk started, just like you can't say where Metal started, you can find seeds for it all over the place

Next question: Who was the best Ska band?

Television were one of the great CBGB's bands, I can't believe you've not heard of them. There was a real "literary" thread running through that scene: Patti Smith was a poet, and she and Tom Verlaine had a wee literary/poetry magazine going at one point. Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine started Television: the issue was that drugs fucked them up, but you should check out their first and best album "Marquee Moon". After they split Richard formed Richard Hell and the Voidoids which despite the pretentious name gave the world two of the best punk songs ever written: "Love Comes in Spurts" and of course "Blank Generation". Do yourself a favour and check them out. Also the re-formed Television are touring and playing the Powerstation this year. (sans Richard)

C: David Byrne is more "punk" than anyone. He has never ever given a shit what others thought, and always ploughed his own very quirky furrow. They were eventually commercially successful, sure, but check out his subsequent career for the epitome of "doing it my way" and "fuck you I won't do what you tell me". My life in the Bush of Ghosts is one of my favourite records of all time by the way.

D: Sure, Blondie became commercially successful. So what?. They were there at the beginning, they did the hard yards, and they all did their own thing. There was a focus on Debbie Harry but the band was really good and so was the songwriting. And again, the DIY ethic is there.

A lot of people think that "punk" bands toiled away in relative obscurity because they wanted to. Demonstrably not true. Best example of that is The Ramones. Johnny is on record as saying that they wanted to be bigger than the Beatles and they were trying for broad mainstream commercial success. My point being that commercial success does not mean that anyone has compromised some outsider imposed straitjacket of what "punk" is: in fact in my view that is the single worst thing about the scene. It directly equates to Harley Davidson. The worst thing about the brand is some of its fans.

As for the ska question: Jamaican or British?

My favourite of the Jamaicans is probably Toots and the Maytals (Pressure Drop, 54-56, Monkey Man) or the Skatalites (Guns of Navarone) but to be fair, that as a genre in its heyday was like early rock and roll: It was a singles based format. So a lot of the really good songs didnt make it to albums, or the albums werent great. As an example I have an album by Delroy Wilson (name checked in the Clash's "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" which is, to be fair, not great. The Trojan, Studio One, and Lee Perry collected boxsets are really good though. I've a bunch of them if you want a headsup.

Of the british "new wave" ones it would have to be The Specials: Jerry Dammers is a really really good songwriter. And you know, "Ghost Town". I also really liked The Beat, and Bad Manners for a bit of skinhead party fun. Not to forget The Selecter.

I fucking hate UB40 though of course they were the most commercially successful. Schmaltzy pappy crap. And who covers Neil Diamond for fucks sake?

I don't acknowledge any of the american third wave ones. your NO Doubts etc. they are as bad ad Green Day or NOFX (IMNHAAO)

The key difference for me was that it was as a musical genre picked up on by "The Establishment" in the UK and taken very seriously as a political movement.

examples: tours by the Sex Pistols stopped, them getting arrested on that boat, demonstrations agin' it... all that.

And as a threat to social order. That just didnt happen to other genres of popular music. And in fact the same level of public outrage hadnt been seen since early rock n roll or when those numpties started burning Beatles albums because John Lennon said they were bigger than Jesus.

Didnt happen after or during "Grunge" which is the most comparable watershed. Didnt happen when rap went mainstream (though I love a lot of that early stuff - very political: it wasnt always about dirty bitches and too much money).

I fucking hate UB40 though of course they were the most commercially successful. Schmaltzy pappy crap. And who covers Neil Diamond for fucks sake?

Although they came out of the same general West Midlands area, the only thing that UB40 have in common with the 2Tone bands is that they have black and white members. They're a reggae band and should be lumped in with the likes of Aswad and Maxi Priest.

English Ska of that era is really defined by the blending of Jamaican influences with punk.

I don't acknowledge any of the american third wave ones. your NO Doubts etc. they are as bad ad Green Day or NOFX (IMNHAAO)

"From The Cradle To The Grave"

Well they took you from your mother's womb and put you in a school
Told you how to run your life by following the rules
Told you not to pick your nose or disrespect the queen
Scrub your teeth three times a day keep mind and body clean
Save up all your pocket money, nothing is for free
And you'd better trust your parents cos there's no one else you see
And then they send you off each day remember what you're told
"You may think you don't need teaching but you'll need it when you're old"

And if you're too intelligent they'll cut you down to size
They'll praise you til you're happy then they'll fill you full of lies
Cos intelligence is threatening and genius is sin
If you could ever see through them they know they'd never win

So they channel your ability into the right direction
If you're good enough and rich enough you can be a politician
On the other hand if your too thick they'll tell you that you're lazy
They'll put you down and wind you up until it drives you crazy

They'll say you ought to learn a trade to help you in your life
Success is written in three parts: A job, a house, a wife
They'll say that school prepares you for the awesome world outside
Well it certainly gives you bigotry and patriotic pride

Racism, sexism teacher to class
From school to work remains the sameare you white and middle class?

You'll learn that bad men dress in black and good men dress in white
And the pamphlets in the playground say that's right
And that girls were made for housework and boys were made to fight
And the naughty pictures on page 3 make everything alright

And so from school to the outside world these morals you will take
And unless you can reject them you'll have your mind at stake

They'll give you a decision when you get to 18, too
The right to vote for someone else who says he cares for you
But the only thing he cares about is getting to the top
By conning you with empty words that promise you a lot
But the end result is slavery to a false set of ideals
You'll be tempted to believe them cos they'll seem so very real
The slavery of attitudes that make you keep in line
Subconsciously devoted to the morals of our time

And when you end up on the dole which you very likely will
They'll offer you a brand new trade: Learning how to kill

Why don't you join the army? Be a man and not a fool
There's someone else to think for you just like there was at school

They'll promise you absolution from the murders you'll commit
In the name of god and country they can get away with it
They fill you full of orders and promise you rewards
Like busting up your family by sending you abroad
A holiday in Germany or Iceland or Hong Kong
Making money being useless well it seems it can't go wrong
But then it's off to Northern Ireland where you'll practice what they preached
You'll shoot to keep yourself alive and kill to keep the peace
And then it won't be so much fun as you hear the wounded crying
Cos before they couldn't speak english and you didn't know what they were saying
But when the children call you "Bastard" it will make you think again
When you cannot tell the difference between animals and men

Animals don't wear uniforms but they kill as much as you
But the army kills for money and animals kill for food
It's the basest degredation in the name of what is right
Become something you never were and regret it til you die

Cos your father will tell you "Sonny, you must do as you are told"
And you'll say the same thing to your kids when you're 32 years old
And unless you can react against the brainwash from the start
Your government will rule your mind and your mind will rule your heart
You'll conform to every social law and be the system's slave
From birth to school to work to death, from the cradle to the grave.....

Yep, I was right into that. Fortunate to be in London as well. Remember seeing the Sex Pistols when I was 12 at a community hall in the East End. Followed the Clash and The Dammed around London in my early teens. Carried Hugh Cornwall (of the Stranglers) guitar into the Hammersmith Palais when I was 14. Yeah it was a great time, all about getting out there and rebelling and all that kind of shit. Getting sent home for telling teachers to 'Fuck Off' because we saw the Pistols saying that on TV the night before.

I like a lot of the US hardcore and punk bands from the 80's none more so than Black Flag (and Bad Brains) and the DK's etc

here's Hank the Tank on modern music

y2q5L8kUOtA

the new punk rock is the kids in their bedrooms making stuff up and putting it online. Thats the new "punk" and its really important that old fuckers like me dont get it and dont like it.

In fact theres an argument that all that stuff I hate (dubstep, a lot of electronica, the whole "the DJ is a musician" thing) is the "new" punk. and thats cool. because rock music since the 50's has been about rebellion, pissing off your parents etc. It is an aberration that you get grandads and granddaughters at a rolling stones show. or that a band calling itself the Who are touring.

My son hates it when I go to see gigs up there, reckons its embarrassing having a nearly 50yr old punk rocker for a father. But like I tell everyone else, tough fuckin shit. If your not happy with the way I dress or act.:bye::bye:

most of the old english bands that come here are in the 50s - nothing to be be ashamed of

^^^ if you read the liner notes for Give Me Convenience or Give me Death they talk about the prank they pulled because they went on some TV show and the people requested a "toned down" version of Holiday in Cambodia. Instead they came out with the shirts with the S on them and then pulled the ties round to make the $ sign and ripped into a song they'd written lambasing the label. Hilarious. Pity its all gone to lawsuits and they dont speak. Like Black Flag vs Flag. Not cool.

The chorus "ça plane pour moi" can mean "Everything's going well for me" and "I'm high/spaced out"... so in the end I've decided to opt for "I feel so great".
The lyrics are quite "dirty" (alcohol, drug, sex...) and "delirious" (so definitely not the best song to learn academic French), but it's probably the most famous hou hou hou houuuu in a song in French...

I also like that song !
