A proposal by the Social Development Minister Watana Muangsook to close off a public road for motorcycle racing has been spanned by a wide range of authorities. Muangsook, seeking a way of easing the problem of illegal road racing, proposed closing a one kilometre stretch of road between 10pm and 1am once a week, asked for by the racers.

A number of authorities have pointed out to the Minister that this is condoning illegal activities, would cause disturbance to residents and would also have the legal issue of who would be responsible should accidents occur.

Pol Maj-Gen Montri Chamroon, deputy head of the city police, said the state should build a race track and ensure racing was kept strictly off the roads.
