Found this posted on Bookface and thought i would share it here.
Im a real sucker for NZ riders achieving success internationally, and this dude achieved a lot. Nearly became the first rider to win a 500GP championship on a 2 stroke, that he built himself, out of an outboard engine.

Really good watch, bloody sad though.
Does the yellow kiwi Bruce Anstey has on his helmet relate at all to Kim?

The book is well worth a read as well. Fairly heavy in detail so can be a but of hard read in places but enjoyable and gives some great images of the goings on on the circuit and what made Kim tick.

Keep an eye out for the "Kim, The Kiwi on the Konig" book. Well worth a read and an insight into the building/development of the Konig bike along with the dangers of racing in those years.

They had the bike here at Pukie just a few years back, at the classic meeting.
Was great to be able to check it out. Sounded pretty sweet too.
The film mentioned (Love Speed & Loss) is definately recommendable. Lots of original footage filmed by his wife (I think?).
Poor chap copped it right where they said there should be bales the day before.

Where He said they should be. He was poo-poo'd by the organiser. One of the 'throttle works both ways argument' morons. After reading the book I felt like flying yo yrj UK, trying to find which rest home the tosspot was in & giving him a slap. It got worse too, he didn't get to hospital for ages & when he was there was considered more useful for spare parts and left to die. More slaps needed.

What he said.
The amount of BS that happened was bizarre.
Read the book - its friggen huge, but its a good read.
After reading it one of my bucket list items is to put a Yamaha outboard smoker in a bike frame.

Not enough people in this country know about amazing talents of Kim Newcombe, and unfortunately John Britten's brilliance is destined to be forgotten too.
They should have renamed the North and South Islands after these two.

Where He said they should be..
Yeah, that's what I meant, worded poorly. I thought it was him and a couple of other riders? But could be wrong (usually am!).

I don't see why not. Even just a place name.
We have McLaren Drive/Falls, Hamilton.....
We need Newcome Estate unfortunately sounds like a retirement village though. Lake Newcome? Isle of Britten?

There was a guy in ChCh back in the early eighties, Earl Nun or something like that. He had a mercury outboard engine ( I seem to recall it was 200 hp?) in a drag bike. I saw it run at hawkesbury in '81. It was very very quick.

I heard that another film was being made about Kim Newcombe, there was some big shitstorm between Richard Driver (the producer Of love Loss and speed) and the guy who came up with the original idea, lots of recrimination etc. Anyway the more light that gets shed on this story has to be a good thing. Supposedly even more original footage has been found. be great to see.

In the 70's this was done with a Snowmobile engine jet which has a CVT.
it had Mag Monocoque Disks mag air suspension lots of avant guard stuff.
A Jet ski engine might be easier to work with.

I'm reading the book, gotta be impressed by anyone whose first road race is the Nurburgring on a self built bike and nearly won if his British final drive had held together.
