I must be an idiot, but I thought that the Honda CB series were solid bikes.
But still, $6000 is a bit much for it.

i dont reckon its worth 6k, but this is red baron we are talking about. their plan seems to be price bikes at what they'll sell for in 20 years time once they start becoming 'vintage' and then store them in their show room until that day.
anyway, comparing it to a duke 200 is silly IMO - both bikes would appeal to (mostly) a different set of buyers i reckon, particularly in the learner segment.

I've been offered 7 Grand for my mint gsxr1000K6 done about thirty kms. As a trade that is, which is probably less for a buy ?
That's the way the NZ market is I guess so unless I get emotional and just want to change, this will probably be my last bike.

Those CB thingies are cool as fuck, TSS had/have one and I think it looks mean. Dunno that $6K is realistic though, can't remember what Stu has on his.

Good tidy bike with some retro appeal,$6k may not be realistic but if someone pays $5250 for it no doubt they (dealer) would still have a big smile on there dial.Secondhand bikes/cars prices are often dictated by what they had to pay for it when traded,no idea with this particular bike but if they paid big bucks for it in order to get the guy to buy a new bike then they have to put an unrealistic price on it and hope someone will come close...ish.

Yeah there's a bit of that... kinda pisses me off when in 6 months the best offer I could get on a 2010 street triple (with extras + new tyres) didn't top $9k. And yet people are asking $6/7k for late 90s 600s?
Or 3k for a non-going 1989 600 with 230,000ks on the clock? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-649049220.htm

I've been in there before and enquirer about the high price of a bros 650 they (still have 2 years later).. Was told that they often have to spend a heap of money after importing, hence the high price...

That's just business though. Sometimes you have to take a loss to move things on. If they've had it sitting there for 2 years they have pretty much lost money on it no matter what it sells for anyway.

The longer it sits there, the older it gets. The older it gets, the less it's worth.

Yeah, some may think it's expensive (and they're always the most vocal knowitalls) but answer me this.
Show me a LAMs bike, with complete and genuine nostalgia factor, but all the benefits of modern engineering, electrics and reliability for similar money?
Retro is IN in a big way right now, you can't go past one of these if that's your bag. Go for a ride one one some day, fucken awesome. We had a bright yellow one, sold it in a week for $5995 to a working tourist. Luckily for me, we just traded it back again so I get to hoon on it some more.

I've heard these sorts of things before but it just sounds fucking irrational. Surely once the dealer has bought something, if the goal is to sell it, it should be priced to sell? Regardless of what they paid for the bike they've got nothing to gain by having it sit on the floor unsold.

This angle is all good with me. If you can sell it then do, it's the overpriced bikes that sit for months/years that confuse me.

To a point yes and i agree but life aint perfect and sometimes shit happens,in this bikes case it may well be worth a punt if you have had to trade it to get the deal as i said its tidy and will appeal to those with cash in hand. Can also depend on your sales manager ie i had one once that more times than i could count wouldnt let me sell a new stock vehicle for a $1500 profit because he thought he could get a better offer more, annoying when 4 months later the fucking thing was still sitting there. In this bikes case as i said earlier if they got $5250 for it then it would be worth the wait.Dealers know more than anyone "ask what you like its the getting thats important".

its really quite simple, nothing is worth more than what some one is prepared to pay, a seller has two choices, sell or dont sell. a buyer also has two choices, buy or dont buy. it really is that simple

The last sentence in his add says it all: 'Reluctant to sell' - "Sorry honey, I've tried to sell my beloved project, but no one wants to buy it"

not too long ago, said people were quite happy to pay 4k plus for a 20yr old, thrashed to fuck 250, cuz they is da shizzz
It's a Learner approved 400, it and other bikes like it, are now going to be the 'high priced' learner bikes.. and I'd (personally) rather pay 6k for that 400 single, than 4k for a thrashed to fuck, 20yr old 250! :brick:

Yeah it's a lot of bike for 7 and it's way better than me. I'd have to add another 15 to get a new one.
I'll be turning this one into a coffee table rather than sell it. Hey, I love it anyway.
ps as another comparison I've been offered a 1966 Yamaha 250 YDS3 for 6 grand !!! and that's what I started out on !!

Like some others here I'm sorta stuck with my bike but not *that* worried. I like the triple engine, the bike came with most of the Triumph accessory catalogue, and has all my fruit salad on it.
A few months back I asked about trading it on a Street Triple, 'cause I was retiring and liked the idea of something smaller. The quote was less than half what it cost new four years ago.
Just a note re Special Edition Triumphs, there are a few around currently. They can cost a few thousand more than the standard model but when you go to trade the price offered will be based on the standard bike of that year. So unless you are among the careless rich...

It's not like you don't know what to do with that ENORMOUS torque hit at seven grand. I'm in total agreement that you should keep it till your back won't let you take it off the stand, then chuck a flat glass top on it as a breakfast bar...It's too tall for a coffee table.

It's how retail works.
Somewhere out there there is a guy who rode one of these CBs back in the day. He has had a family tragedy, a couple of wives, too many kids and too much mortgage since, and now he's 49 and has his finances sorted. He walks into Red Baron, and makes an emotional decision to buy a bike he's spent 25 years wishing he hadn't had to sell to buy his first house.
That's retail. Sometimes folks make emotional purchasing decisions. Old bikes are part of that.
