Does anyone in NZ do this?
If possible wanting to have a setup that I can potter in between Picton and Nelson with.

Thought a widened luggage rack for the board to slide between and rest on pillion with a frame that slots in underneath (removable for when it's not needed) to support the far end of the board? I know with a car you can have something like 4m to 6m (I only need about 1m) overhang from the rear axle, so do the luggage racks count as part of the chassis/frame when they are bolted to it on a bike to keep it all legal?

Any obvious problems I'm missing?

Might just be a completely stupid idea but this is an issue that didn't initially cross my mind when switching to a bike :brick:

Dimension rules for motorcycles: http://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof/motorcycles/vehicle-exterior/dimensions

More details: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/13/vehicle-dimensions-and-mass.html

You'll also need to flag (or light in hours of darkness) a load that's over 200mm past side of vehicle or over 1m past end of vehicle. Yes, if a structure is rigidly fixed to the vehicle, it counts.

Interestingly, the rear overhang for a motorcycle can be 4m past the rear axle, but the risk of being rear ended by some moron gaping would probably be the problem...

Nope. Off the side is asking for trouble unless you're just putting through to a local spot imo. Plus, my board is smaller and stronger than a surfboard so I have the option of having it off the back. Well I think I do XD

Lights aren't an issue. Cheap enough these days. Would plonk another set of indicators and a brake light on the extension bit to keep the plod happy and myself feeling safer.

Thanks for the link, I'm crap at finding that stuff. 4m is more than I thought would be allowed and way more than I need.

Game on!
