Kiwibiker Rideout to Torque

<img src="/images/torque.jpg" align="right" hspace="3">On Saturday 31st of Janurary Kiwibiker will be going to the movies at St Lukes to watch Torque.

We will be meeting up at Motomail before hand and then we'll ride out to Village Cinemas in St Lukes. It is likley that we will be turing up to a publicity stunt before hand so bring you're flashest leathers, wearing those KB'er shirts and start scrubbing those bikes!!

When the movie has finished we'll get some lunch at the complex or nearby. When we've finished up lunch there will be a rideout going the back road to Ngaruawahia. For those who don't wish to come on a ride they can leave after the movie or after lunch.

Make sure that you bring at least $10 for the movies, because this will go into a kitty to pay Shade.

Count me in? :msn-wink:
To be counted in you need to send me a PM and any other bikers/like minded people that you will be bringing along. Make sure this is done by THURSDAY 29 JAN night latest. That way I can get the number of confirmed bookings off to shade for Friday morning. So get those PM's in rolling in already!

WHAT: KB GOES TO SEE TORQUE THEN LUNCH AND RIDE OUT AFTERWARD.
WHERE: MEET AT MOTOMAIL LOCATED ON WESTERN SPRINGS RD.
WHEN: SATURDAY 31ST JAN meet 9AM. Movie Screens at 10am. Leaving Motomail at 9.20am.
WHY: DO WE NEED A REASON?
Latest confirmed bookings so far: 18 (last updated Tues 27th Jan 1315hrs)

Good idea Andrew ... so long as after the movie the KBers can restrain themselves fro duplicating what just been seen :P

Reminds me of the Kung Fu movies I used to go and see as a kid ... and what happened afterwards on the way home.

I am keen... but hamilton? Do they even have proper movies? (No offence Hamiltonians) I would be in for I-max then head out elsewhere afterwards if anyone else was keen.

Okay so we've established that its a definate goer.

That would be a really good if we could take Shade up on his offer, so I reckon Village Cinemas at St Lukes is the venue for sure.

So how about the weekend on the 24 - 25 Jan? Perhaps Saturday is more preferable, what are the options for screening times Shade?

So at a guess we already have about 15 bike minded people confirming!

If the movie was screened in mid morning, those who wanted could go for a ride and a bite to eat afterward

How does that sound?

jrandom
15th January 2004, 13:18
How does that sound?

A Saturday morning-ish screening would probably work for me.

We should all turn up in the lobby in full gear, possibly even with helmets still on... might even be a good publicity thing, if Shade tips off someone to come and take a photo and do an article or summat, we could be world famous!

15th January 2004, 15:24
Hey guys,

This could turn out quite well.. I could book you guys in for the first session or whenever you like -

What i need is someone to organise when everyone wants to go, and give me a call on my cell phone asap.

021 187 8853

Names Shade by the way (Yeah i know, unusual eh)

I can get everyone in for $10 each (Instead of $14), and possibly even $6 each (Depending what i can do *grin*)

I think it would be cool if everyone who comes stays in their gear for a little bit, we'll get some photo's / publicity in the foyer. (Still organising, so dont quote me on this).

Let me know eh.

I've had a few pm's from KBer's to say that they can't make Saturday 25th but can make Saturday 31st Janurary.

I therefore propose that we go on Saturday morning 31st Janurary at about 10.30ish.

When are the screenings for Saturday 31st Janurary Shady? This should hopefully work out ok. It also gives you a little more time to arrange things your end.

Just told some of my mates - and they are dead keen!! ...they'll be there sat morning with a Hiab truck and a cutting torch.

hahahah lol.

Sweet, we'll aim for Saturday 31st then. I can arrange that.

I wont be able to give you guys screening times until Monday 26th, as thats when we recieve them for that week.

Though, any general ideas as to morning or evening?

Hopefully I'll have the day off so I can watch it with you guys - would be cool to see everyone turn up in their KB shirts, someone donate me one? *cough*.

We have pleanty of time to organise, will take me 2 mins to chuck into the computer here at work, i just need numbers etc eh.

Also, we're going to have to organise payment. - We can only accept one lump sum for a group booking, so either everyone brings money on the day and puts it into a kitty, and payment is made, or someone amex's it, then gets paid back?

Hmm
Thinking about more options...

Kwaka-Kid
15th January 2004, 18:04
hey sounds great! and shade this is likely to e quite big eh... But i will be there, what about a middayish session then KB lunch/RIDEOUT! Coromandel Loop after watching Torque... gotta also organise where we will all park the bikes... need enough room to group them together...

Sycophant
15th January 2004, 18:53
Saturday the 31st is good for me, I'll be in for some of that action...

Wouldn't mind lunch or something, but I am probably not up for a long ride or anything (my track record at not-falling-off on unknown roads is not good).

Andrew
15th January 2004, 19:25
The movie should start around mid morning. When the movie has ended we can eat possibly at the complex or near by. After lunch we could go on a ride out for the afternoon.

Those who don't wish to go for a ride can take off later after lunch.

As for the issue of payment, everybody should bring their own money and put into a kitty on the day. Everybody should budget for $10 and have this made up of change so that if it is cheaper than $10 you can pay for it there and then.

In order to build numbers everybody who can confirm that they will be coming should send me a PM, this should also include any other people you will be taking. You should confirm to me by Wednesday 28th Janurary night latest!!

As for the whereabouts of where to go for a ride afterwards that can be decided closer to the date. The important thing now is that people who are definatly coming, to PM me so that I can get this to Shade on Thursday morning.

Security could be a little bit of an issue. Are you able to organise reserved type parking for us, near a security guard or near the entrance?

Thanks a lot Shade, I'm sure your reputation is about to soar to number # 1!
:p

Kwaka-Kid
15th January 2004, 22:55
yuppers... i say shade sorts out some sort of security definatly.. yeah ride aftewards can be sorted on the day even.. split up etc. this is gunna b good.

Sycophant
16th January 2004, 02:54
What about meeting somewhere before hand, and making a small ride to the theatre, for a more impressive entrance :) I think that would add to the whole atmosphere.

Maybe a meeting somewhere down the northwestern motorway or something 20 minutes beofre hand..?

Shade
16th January 2004, 17:25
Right, here's the deal.

On Monday 26th I will have session times for Torque for the 31st. When this happens I am able to book your confirmed tickets for the screening.

I have made arrangements with our security guards here at St Lukes to patrol the Bikes as well as the complex. They will be patroling on Level 4 Parking, which is the VERY top level of the St Lukes mall. It is sign posted as "Best parking for cinema entrance". Usually this parking lot isnt too busy (most people dont really know about it as its relativley new) - so all going to planned you can park all bikes up there in one group so security can see everything easily.

Im on good terms with some of the Westfield Security guys too, so I might be able to get them patroling also.

Obviously the disclaimer is no responsibility for any bikes lost blah blah. But I'd say they will be pretty safe.

Have spoken to marketing and they think it will be awesome if we can get you guys to pose for some photo's in the foyer with gear on before the movie. Will also get some shots of all the bikes etc. All going to plan, should look pretty cool for a display put up around the complex. (Good advertising for Kiwibiker too!)

Any other queries, let me know.

Kwaka-Kid
16th January 2004, 23:20
yep, so where are we meeting people? where is fairly central for a 30min buffer time only 20-30mins from st lukes, jsut so we can all gather and arrive together.

Sycophant
17th January 2004, 04:25
yep, so where are we meeting people? where is fairly central for a 30min buffer time only 20-30mins from st lukes, jsut so we can all gather and arrive together.

Somewhere very close would be the large carpark off Great North Road opposite Western Springs Park.

I was also thinking about the Westgate centre at the end of the Northwestern motorway - makes for a nice ride into St Lukes. Also a nice ride out there from the city, or upper harbour drive for the shore dwellers.

Or if a less motorway-esqe route might be nice then maybe Cornwall park at the base of One Tree Hill, or the showgrounds would be a nice starting point?

I guess we want to arrive at least 15-20 minutes before the screening time to allow for organising and staunch posing. So, we should aim to all be at the launch point with good time to spare.

And, if you miss the launch, you know where we're going, you can catch up or take a sneaky shortcut and beat everyone there...

For what it's worth, my background in PR and television tells me that if this is a slow news day (which it may well be) that the TV news would be interested in it for a little "and also today..." story at the end of the 6pm. For that, it's worth giving a quick phone call to the news desk the day before and just saying "hey, there's this little event thing that might make a nice little piece".

That's my $0.02.

"In order to build numbers everybody who can confirm that they will be coming should send me a PM, this should also include any other people you will be taking. You should confirm to me by Wednesday 28th Janurary night latest!!"

As for the meeting place it will be outside motomail.. This will be confirmed as soon as the session times are confirmed. Till then lets work on a place to ride out to afterward.

I was watching the preview and making of this. My god - there is some of the worst CG EVER seen in this movie. As for riding the bike along the top of the train - come on.....

Why can't they just rely on the skills of riders rather than ramp things up with CG....

You can tell if you look closely at the detail (e.g. granularity - CG generally looks sharper than real images or just by the improbability of the camera movement e.g. 360 deg panning around a bike on a train). Not that I'm a techie geek or anything... ;)

The stunts looked a bit like the ones in MI2 - i.e. sportbikes doing wheelies and stoppies in the dirt.

Just caught up on this, it sounds awesome. I'll be in for Sat 31st and so will my partner (Death_inc). I think we should be at the theatre more than 15 mins in advance to allow us time to park up and do the pose thing. We're keen to meet at motomail just need to give us a time. We all need to get behind anything that promotes motorcycling in NZ and this website of course. Will send a PM to confirm. Will also pass this on to 3 other bike mates we have and let you know if they can make it too. We're not fussed where we ride afterwards but the coromandel sounds a little far for an afternoon ride. What about ridin the back road from Tuakau to Ngaruawahia? And I'm all for TV Promo too!!!!! About time we showed people we're not ALL a bunch of hoodlooms, and this is an awesome social sport/hobby/pass time.

Seeing I'm at the wrong end of the country again now (was at St Lukes last week when on holiday) I thought I'd better check the movie out last night. I won't say much to save spoiling it for you, but I see on the US Motorcycle Online they are bitching about sports bikes being used in the dirt, not realistic etc etc. I guess there is nothing new about that but hey how different is that to some of the old James Bond stunts where things have always done stuff you couldn't. As for the dirt scenes and the jump off the train it appeared to me they are using dirt bikes (long travel suspension etc) but dressed with bodywork to look like the sportbikes. That may have been CGI that they did it with or they could have made the bodywork panels up to match - I couldn't tell. Also I couldn't tell what kind of dirt bikes they were using.

The only other thing is there has been a definite shift in movie style since I was young. Back in the 70's ( I guess Jackrat would remember) there were bike movies but there was always the sex scenes too no matter how real. (James Bond always got his chick too) Remember Easy Rider, Little Fauss and Big Halsey and other such movies. Now though there is the full on bike action which to purists is somewhat unrealistic, the tough talking dudes, the violence and that's it. Quite a different culture altogether. The funny thing is, go back and watch Easy Rider again and man is it crap compared to what we thought at the time it was the coolest thing in town.

Hey again,

At the moment, the session times for Torque are as follows.

Saturday 31st Jan

Torque -

10am, 2pm, 4pm, 9:30pm and 11:30pm (Lateshow).

It is my understanding that you will probably be aiming for the 10am session, which will then leave time for a nice ride out in the afternoon (for those who go).

Publicity will probably involve some photo's of the bikes and everyone who comes along. Probably be displayed around the complex on the information board, it will also probably be used in our marketing campaign which gets sent directly to the distributors (who ask us 'what have we done to promote the movie')

I have entered these times into the computer here, as soon as I open the sessions (probably tuesday) I can get your tickets and guarantee seats. The session isnt allocated seating, so first in first serve.

Generally 10am movies are not too busy, so the car park up stairs (Remember, level 4) should be all good to go.

For all those who enjoy some games of timeout, will be able to give you some tokens too.

well, it was a bit of a silly movie and I'm afraid knowing about the dirt bikes in road clothing spoiled a few of those scenes for me. but hey, it was ok.
the highlights:
1) "I live life a 1/4 mile at a time".... "thats the STUPIDEST thing i've ever heard!"
2) the spinning 'cars suck' signs in the intro\
3) getting a Y2k in the movie even though it was a flight of fancy
4) meeting more KB'ers.

how was the ride after boys? I got wet!

Even though the movie is pretty average, I really enjoyed putting faces to names.

Had a great time, will have to do it again huh.

I have no webspace to upload the pics to, so if someone wants to post them up here let me know and i'll email to em :)

Apologies once again for the Camera which would work and then not work. Woulda been nice to get some decent shots at the end, when the Camera decided to die :(

*Waits for Andrew to do the whole 4 chapter summary thing* *nudge*

Another great kiwibiker event. Thanx a mill to Shade for saveing us some money for lunch. :niceone:

The movie was good. Two words, hilarious and entertaining. My opinion anyway. Because form all the crap review, my expectations were pretty low so I couldn't be dissapointed. Weather was shit so I too skiped on the ride afterwards.

Met some more cool new people. Kasper and foy, your helmets and tails were pretty cool, too bad you guys couldn't wear the whole suit.

Thanx again to Andrew and Shade

I'll get in line to say once again.... Thanks to all that spent the time and effort to make such a great meet.
In the end we all got a free movie, free games and met a bunch of great folk.

I'm sorry we didn't join you for the ride afterwards but about a minute after we got home the skies opened up and I thought - Thank f*ck for that!!

In case anyone hadn't noticed it was one of Sarah's (TU250) first rides (ever) and she was bloody nervous.

Again a special thanks to Shade for the tickets and tokens!!

It's on our list :D
However the open road scares the sh*t outta her at the moment and I don't want to rush things and freak her out. :doobey:

Fair enough, KY. It's actually really good that you can admit that, and every biker will tell you that any training is good for you, no matter how long you've been riding.

Lol about the "KY"

Anyway, I succumbed to mortal temptation of indulging myself in Torque movie yesterday. I reckon it was quite fun. One thing that iritates me is why oh why the director insisted on getting as much dirt sequences as possible.....They should've stayed on the road.

But *heck* it was fun!!!
I love the twisty bit on the beginning.....reminded me of my youth days :yeah:
