Truck driver beeps at a van who pulls in front of him, van driver attacks truck driver with a claw hammer.

What the hell would I do if I beeped the horn at someone who cut me off on the bike or did the usual pull over into my lane without seeing me trick, and they got out at the next lights? Granted when on a bike we are a little better protected by our gear than the poor sod in the story, but I'd still rather not be attacked for tootling the horn melodiously!

Anyone been unfortunate enough to have an "incident" happen or almost happen?

I'm not entirely sure this guy is telling everything, i cant belive a simple toot would set someone off to pick up a hammer and come after you, especialy if the guy feels bad enough to hand himself in.

I know what the guy did was horrific but he had to be provoked with more than just a beep?

True... I was thinking along similar lines but then again no matter what you do (to a point !) you shouldn't get attacked with a hammer.... shit how many little fender benders are there everyday where one person was 100% at fault and the other person doesn't feel the need to bash them?

Bloody terrible stuff...

That guy should be done for attempted murder and his partner for being an accomplice. They should never be allowed to drive again.

Unless of course it is considered rude or insensitive in his culture to beep... Then it is totally understandable and we should make allowances (yeah right)

Not wanting to go on and on about it but... Remember the sparkplug over the shoulder thread? Escalating already bad situations is not always a good move on the road, do you think this guy would have had any qualms about running you down on your bike if you pissed him off? There are some real nutters out there..

There's another article in the herald today about a rock thru a bus window (bus was stationary) and of course there's the concrete block off the overpass thing (YES! that bastard is being charged with MURDER!).

I sound like my father, but what IS the world coming to???

My thoughts exactly, not that attacking someone with a hammer is OK in any circumstances..but I thought "yeah right" when I read what was in the paper (" he[the driver] does not know what provoked the attack" ) plus the paper said the hammer guy was demanding an apology. I'm guessing that the truckie provoked the hammer guy big time.

Sarge'll tell us I'm sure but I hear in some parts of the USA where people play banjos a lot and drive big ol' pick up trucks with shotgun in the gun rack an inconsiderate driver can get a cap in his ass, real easy.....

Belive it or not but you're more likely to get shot for no reason in NY or L.A. than in the deep south.

As for the horn beep thing, I dont even know if mine still works that's how often I use it. The pipes are louder so I rev the engine at them. And if they get upity all I have to do is release the clutch and I'm gone.

Recently at school two groups of students ('bogens' and 'maori's') pulled knives out on each other??? wtf is gng on? teachers took the knives off them and told them to go at it with each other. the little pussies chickened out. Sooner these pricks finish each other off the better.

People can take this any way they want but it is just a statement based on living in South Auckland for 32 years...the guy was described as a Pacific Islander ? on the news.....so it is no suprise to me that after being beeped at (even if in the wrong) he attacked the driver with a hammer....... did no one see the the young Tongan trying to bash some girl/woman on the news with a news camera filming it all in another item...No respect,no contribution,no suprise.

Yeah, been chased a few times (car and bike) , and faced t'other guy down a few times. And someone tried to carjack me a few years ago (bastidge ran and stood in front of the cage while his accomplice tried to force the door open - guy in front could jump good , more's the pity, I missed him when I gunned forward in first.)

I can very well believe the truckie. there's a lot of real crazy, violent, hating people out there. And PC or not, gotta go with TLDV8, most of 'em are Maori or Islander.

The women are just as bad. Mrs Ixion was chased in her car by this crazy Island woman. She (the Island woman) was hanging out her window shrieking abuse and tried to ram Mrs Ixion' car . Mrs Ixion also claims that that they try deliberately to hit her on the pedestrian crossing, to the point where she won't try to cross if she sees a dark face in the oncoming car. Don't know about that, don't have that problem m'self, but I always eyeball any oncoming driver , and I'm maybe a bit more agressive appearing than Mrs Ixion.

In a cage, always keep ALL your doors locked at all times. And in the event of an accident , don't get out unless it looks safe.

EDIT: If it looks dodgy and you're on the bike, run. Good trick is go down a narrowish sidestreet , and swerve up a driveway, onto the grass verge, skid turn , and back the way you came. By the time they get a cage turned round you should be well away. Saved me a couple of times that has.If they're on foot and only one of 'em, and you on bike, ram them . Hard.

The attacker was driving a people mover and we all know what the drivers of those are like! The truckie said the other guy cut him off - whether or not this was true I don't really care, but unless the truckie tried to shoot this guy, coming after him with a claw hammer is overkill. The offender is damned lucky not to be facing murder charges.

And as for giving himself up because he felt bad - yeah, right! The video was really clear and it would have only been a matter of time before someone ratted on him. More like he wanted to get 'his side' of the story in first and make out the truckie was totally in the wrong. :violin:

Let's put it this way, even if the truckie had deliberately rammed him (no evidence of this), would a typical motorist take on someone driving a truck? No, but being a typical Islander, he waits until he is in no position to fight back and THEN he attacks him. I'm just surprised it was a claw hammer and not a baseball bat or a machete. :motu:

While a bit uncomfortable putting all Polynesians into one basket like this I know of a case about a year or so ago in West Auckland where a middle aged (apparently decent and church-going) Polynesian guy killed a young Polynesian fellow worker (think he was only 17 or so). Held the young fella down and just kept punching him, what actually finished him was when he hit the young fella with a yard broom, one of those big ones about a metre wide, square in the head with it, like hitting a hockey puck. I know the foreman at the (blasting and painting) place well, and he thought what provoked it was the young fella using a lot of bad language which the older guy didn't like, and being disrespectful when the older guy told him to cut it out. Seems a possibility that that incident (I don't know that it's right to compare it to the road rage thing though) had its source in the culture of the people involved: misbehave, you get smacked. Just not that hard :nono:

in Cleveland.. you MIGHT get one whack with that hammer.. the next sound would be a *BANG*.. .45 through the forehead.. rolling out of the car with a hammer and fire in your eyes is reason enough for me to suspect that you might be wanting to do me serious physical harm.. i am at LEAST gonna have it cocked and locked.. raise the hammer towards me and that is felonious assault.. im going for a kneecap..minimum ( that is , of course, in the US where i DO pack a Colt .45.. licensed to do so too..)

Pissed off an individual (my fault too, nobodies perfect) apologised but he wanted to "Lets settle this like men" Trying not to laugh, (fat, slow, daft as a brush) I said Ok, lent into my car and got my mouth guard out of my training bag.

Actually had a guy on the bridge try to knock me off twice with his truck, then caught up to me at the lights, ran thru traffic to punch me in the helmet. (not well thought out), so I got off my bike and smacked him with my carbon knuckled glove, and enquired if he would like to pursue the matter off the road. he saw sense at this point but I admit to being a little crazy in circumstances where someone tries to smear me on the road.
Sadly I am told this kind of moron is not unknown in Auckland and Wellington in particular, perhaps we just have more then our fair share of nutters in tin-tops. Ride like they are TRYING to kill you and you should be fine!
