Hey there KBers,

Myself and a couple of friends are planning on doing a ride from Hamilton to Cape Reinga from the 22nd to the 25th of November. This is the weekend after the Cape Reinga ride that's being organised on here, so if you couldn't make that one then perhaps you'd like to come along on this one!
We're taking camping gear as we'll be doing the trip on a budget; staying at DOC campsites where possible.

So far there are three of us going, with a varied assortment of bikes; Suzuki GSF250, Kawasaki KLE500, Kawasaki ZX6R. We're all fairly respectable young fellows in our mid - late 20s. We're more interested in seeing the country and having a fun time than racing from stop to stop, so people who are inexperienced or on slower bikes are welcome to join.

Anyone is welcome to come along as long as you don't mind roughing it in tents!
We probably want to keep the number of people under 10 if possible to keep the logistics nice and simple.

SEE BELOW POST FOR ITINERARY, IT WILL BE UPDATED AND MODIFIED ACCORDING TO PEOPLES REQUIREMENTS.

Sooo if anybody is keen to come along, let me know!

Updated (rough) itinerary:

Friday night = camping in Waipu

Saturday = riding to 90 mile beach and heading up to the cape. We had a look at tide times and decided this'd be the best way to do it. If we go straight to 90 mile beach from Waipu (and miss the Russell road :() it'll only take around 3 hours, which works very well with the tides as we'd want to be on the beach at around 3.30. We'll be staying at a DOC campsite near the cape on Saturday night.

Sunday = have a look around the place, set off at some point and hope to make it to Russell (whoever needs to be back home for work could continue on). Camp somewhere around Russell (or maybe george formbys lawn!)

Monday: head for home at a leisurely pace.

I think this will cater well for the people who want to ride 90 mile but need to work on Monday. It'll mean a pretty long day int he saddle on Saturday, but at least the tide times are good!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
90 Mile beach tide times:
We need to get onto the beach about 3 hours after high tide so it's nice and low when we get to the stream at the top.

I'm really keen that sounds like a real fun ride, always wanted to go right up the top of the island too. Those dates happen to fall on the exact days I'm working but I'll have a think about it and see if I can swap some shifts around!

Pretty sure you're going to come down with a nasty cold on the 22nd and won't be able to make it into work for the next few days :shifty:

Thanks for the offer, we'll be passing through there on our way out from Russell so may just take you up on that. Beers and BBQ always go down a treat.

whats your itinerary like?

It's reasonably loose and open to changes on the way, but as a rough outline:

Leave from Hamilton Friday afternoon, spend Friday night at the DOC campsite in Waipu (make a fire, have a few beers etc).
Saturday morning set out from Waipu and make our way up to Russell, apparently the series of roads east of the main highway are really nice to ride. Muck about in Russell for awhile and then head off to find a campsite before dark; possibly take george formby up on his kind offer of lawn + BBQ. The other option is to head straight up to the cape on SH1 and spend Saturday night there.
Depending on whether we pushed on to the cape, or camped on the way; Sunday will involve either riding up to the cape and spending Sunday night there, or starting the journey back down along 90 mile beach and then either another night camping on the way back down south or head straight back to Auckland/Hamilton.

But this is not set in stone and of course we can play it by ear to make sure everyone's happy with the plan.

I imagine you'd have a great time on 90 mile beach with your DRZ :D

Yeah that'd work, perhaps meet up on Friday night or Saturday morning at the campsite and then whatever ends up happening you could head back on Sunday. Would still be a decent trip.

Did I not show you my sausage sizzler when you visited? How rude of me.

I love the Old Russell Road, t'is twisty & scenic. Gravel lovers can turn off & have a squirt through the forest on the original Old Russell Road & ferry dodgers can ride the gravel of Waikare Road. Lots of fun.

You keep mentioning riding 90 mile beach. On your spurt bikes? Then video is a must!

The plan so far is to leave Hamilton on friday afternoon, head up through Auckland and stop at Waipu for the night. Then continue on up to Russell on Saturday and push on to the cape if we feel like it (or ride to the cape the following day). Stay Saturday (or sunday) night at the cape and then head back down 90 mile beach and make our way back home. If we made it to the cape on the saturday, then maybe take an extra day on the way back down. If not then do it in one day. Pretty flexible timetable and we'll be mostly playing it by ear with regard to where we are stopping for the night.

Sooo if anybody is keen to come along, let me know!

You guys still looking for more candidates? Might be keen to come along, will let you know by the time - depending on if the GN250 is ready to go by then, and of course with a rack!

If you can't manage a rack then just get rope and bungee cords! You can lash anything to your pillion seat with enough bungee cords.

Hah yeah, from what I've read it's doable on a sport bike. Although apparently the inlet crossings can be.. interesting.
A mate of mine did it awhile back in a group that included an SV650/1000 and a Buell of some sort. They did it fine 2 up with gear as well so it can't be that hard!

One of the guys has a GoPro so we should get some decent videos to post up. I just love the idea of blasting past a tourist bus full of people on the beach riding a sport bike!

This I have to see!:2thumbsup I feel a touch of ebola coming on that weekend.

Quite a few moons ago "Rocket" Ron Kirkman used to use the beach to set up his hillclimb quad & a bloke oop north used to speed test his GSXR 1000 turbo. T'is doable but fairly nutty.

Oh, check your tides............ That's a biggie. You want to be hitting the beach with the tide going out, preferably halfway out.

Haha, I hear ebola runs it's course in three days. Modern medicine and whatnot ;)

Speed testing on the beach eh? Well that gives me confidence that I'm not going to plough into some soft sand and go flying!
Ah yes, tides.. don't really want to get trapped. Flexible timetable allows for quite a bit of on the go planning so shouldn't be a problem.

Don't forget they got local knowledge, plenty of pitfalls to be found. The beach changes with every tide.

I still ain't ridden it. Bit of butt pucker thinking about getting my lard arse through the soft sand to get on & off, the bike that is. On or off at Te Paki stream is tickety boo but the other access points are Saharan.

It'd be about 4 hours from Waipu to the entrance on to the beach with no stops, so if that works with the tides and whatnot then it'd be doable. But that'd be a pretty tight timetable to get it all done on that day even if the tide times are favourable.

It's about 5 hours from Waipu to Cape Reinga, so if we did that in a day we'd have Sunday to come back down ninety mile beach and you'd be able to get home on Sunday night for work on Monday.

That'd give us a bit more flexibility with managing tide times and stuff cause we wouldn't have to factor in the 4 hour travel time to get there.

That was us and yes it is doable on any bike. The inlet crossings are just something you need to slow down for. Going north up the beach is definately the best option as you get a free car wash at Te Paki stream.
It would be a 2.5hr ride from waipu to waipapakauri beach access nonstop. Going on the fact that it takes me 1hr 40min in my ute from south whangarei to coopers beach and then 20min from there to kaitaia.

Still got a month to plan so we'll see how it turns out.

Low tide is 7.20 approx on sat23rd and high tide is about 13.30. So you would need to aim to hit the beach at 10.00 at the latest heading up and /or coming down you will have to wait till about 3.30pm before going thru Te Paki.
Sunday these times will be about half an hour later.

Oh I thought we'd want to hit the beach about 3 hours after high tide (if coming from the bottom) so we'd have receeding tide and the stream would be nice and empty when we got up to the top?

Yeah you can just stay on state highway one instead and meet us when we get off the beach (or at the campsite).
I think at least one other person is not keen to ride on the beach so he'll be happy to have someone to ride with on the road.

If you don't mind some vehicular manslaughter.

But seriously, nah you can't. Full of tourists to the lighthouse and I'm sure there is some scary discouraging signage on the way.

Most of those beaches are pretty secluded too, probably only accessible by sea.

I'd be a maybe... as long as you guys don't take offence to a 250 dullie on knobblies giving you a good spanking on the twisties :sweatdrop. I'm a semi respectable 31yr old who likes a beer and a few yarns :shifty:

Oh darn, what needs doing? Is it just luggage stuff?
I spent about half an hour today figuring out the best way to mount a huge bag onto the back of my ZX6R with no rack or anything. With enough cord and bungees, anything is possible.

G4L4XY
12th November 2013, 19:12
I still gotta see how much I can pack. Got some bungee cords to strap the sleeping bag on top of the tailbag, hopefully they're long enough

If it's a luggage issue just sleep under the stars and wear the same undies all weekend...however this will see you riding at the back so we don't have to smell you haha

Dammit, looks like I won't be able to make it.

Didn't realise it went fri-mon, and I'm not sure I'd like to do the whole trip back to AKL in one go.

Definitely keen to do a shorter ride sometime, will keep an eye out

Im keen can I come? Im on a XJ600 so I'll be able to keep up. Have you thought about going the back way through kaikohe/mangamuka? Very scenic and less traffic plus would probably be easier on the newer riders lol if not sweet as im keen where r we meeting up in hamilton? The base would be a good starting point? Any possibility of getting someone to chuck my tent on the back of their bike? I can can carry the rest.

Goodluck with getting someone to take your tent, can barely pack my own tent lol. We're keeping a close eye on the weather as it looks to be shite the entire weekend. Also meeting up at Vinz0rs house. Here is the linky to the FB group https://www.facebook.com/events/177216622482385/177287042475343/?notif_t=event_mall_reply

If no definite plans/bookings have been made, postponing a week might be the better option.

Yeah of course, we'll be meeting up at my place, it's out the back of Huntington near Gordonton road for a nice quick getaway. Have made rough plans as to the route but nothing set in stone so open to suggestions. Haha, good luck with the tent :P I'm riding a ZX6R with no luggage rack so space is at a premium!

Yeah, the weather forecast is looking pretty terrible at the moment, it's pissing down outside right now in Hamilton. It's rain rain rain rain all through our trip dates in Kaitaia. Might have to postpone it for when the weather is better, doing this trip without nice weather would be bloody horrible (camping!).

We'll see how it goes though. If you PM me your name I'll add you on facebook and invite you to the group.

Well, if the weather prediction does not change you can expect a mixed bag, showers, bit of ominous cloud & sunshine. It will be hot, too. We have the same weather pattern now, Metvuw says rain, I have blue sky, a bajillion degrees & the odd grey cloud scudding over. Lighting the BBQ shortly..
Rained late last night for a bit but it was dust dry again this morning. Fire by permit only already.
Been like this for two weeks. Northland is well & truly in summer mode.

If we had to postpone I doubt I'd be able to make any other day. I work 3 on 3 off but the chances of that falling on a weekend is slim :( However I now have 9 days off so I sure hope we can go!

I'm optimistic for all of ewes coming up here this weekend, like I posted earlier we have had a similar weather pattern for weeks & it has amounted to a few light showers & the odd very localised heavier shower.
Also bare in mind that the weather is coming in from the East so in all likelihood the West coast will be dry, it's usually one side or the other oop here.
Gawan, get on yer bikes!

We sure did! Ended up being five of us (four bikes). We had changed our plans due to weather and were going to do forgotten world highway, but then on friday the forecast changed; thunderstorms for lower/mid north island and fine up north!
So we decided to just go for it.
Was a good trip, although next time I think I'll invest in some proper luggage carrying devices. Running downhill through twisties and getting hit in the back by 30kg of gear is not fun, my poor wrists..

Sinaptik and I did 90 mile beach, he on his KLE500 and me on the ZX6R, that was quite an experience..
We got there a little early so the tide was still fairly high, which probably didn't help matters as the sand wasn't packed very hard. Also, we took the wrong entrance! We meant to come in at the one a bit further up that has good access onto the beach, but we ended up at the southern one (can't remember names) and had to plow through a whole lot of loose sand. 8000 rpm in first gear and only moving about 30cm/sec was a bit of a laugh. Went out via the stream, water level was pretty low so as long as I stayed on the gas didn't have too much trouble.

The first night we stayed at the DOC campsite at Waipu, second night we stayed at the Tapotupotu DOC site 3km south of the Cape. Came back from the Cape to Hamilton today.

Here are a few shots I got with my phone camera, Sinaptik had his GoPro so hopefully he'll upload some video of the beach ride. Tim got some really cool panoramas of the Tapotupotu site so hopefully he puts them up!

Hope the bikes go a hose down, the four that went on the beach our trip hosed them down back at base camp.

Good on you for giving it a go...but yeah that looks like a lot more sand than I ended up with, and I'm still finding more I've missed two weeks later. Surprisingly sticky stuff.
