On Friday I added a Nikon D800 and an array of glass to the arsenal. Spent the weekend learning its nuances.
Went for the D800 for a number of reasons. Mainly that duties will be split between video and print production.
I went for a Tokina 16-28 zoom lens with shooting real estate in mind too. Never had a zoom that short before, but it can make ordinary shots epic.
The dog isn't so sure.

Saved as high res jpeg each file opens at around 104mb in photoshop - 7360 x 4912px.
ISO dials up to 6400, but it gets a bit muddy at that speed. ISO 2000 is quite viable.
Low light video is quite impressive too.

Such a narrow depth of field! Lays significant emphasis on the subject matter. Cool

Impressive choice, Dave...
Should have gone in closer with that lens. My Tokina 10-17mm f4 allowed me to get really close in, almost 20-15cm away from the subject. Very amusing distorted (big-headed) portraits resulted!
Have fun with the new toy!

Yeah - they can get in remarkably tight - like what I would expect from a macro lens.

I have an 8mm fisheye for my 550D, its min focal distance is basically 1cm from the front glass. I love getting up in peoples faces.

That D1X is beautiful. I could have too, but my D90 wasn't the only hardware I upgraded.
Also added a Canon XA25 vidcam as part of my cunning plan to revolutionise the motorcycle media.

Expensive?
I was looking at some why dangle glass that was three times as much as the 28-300 Nikor lens I did buy.

Never seen 28-3c
u mean 80-300? new plastic one? Theyre poo. Glued lenses, fogg, and anything with that kind of range isnt going to be optimal except for near the middle.
Iso 2000?!
Fucking digital insanity. my best work was on 200.

Its a Samyang lens, very cheap and very good, just no auto focus.

oh it is adjustable but the max aperture is f2.8 so loads of light if I want it. The focal length is fixed at 90mm, its a nice Tamron with image stabilisation.
the DOF fun is to be had with my 70-200 which can stay at f4 for the whole focal length range

and the Ken Rockwell reviews are very useful, he tests by using the gear like actual people do, the obsession with test cards in the studio is a bit removed from reality unless you are a professional and even then.....
what I want to know is will the gear work for me? I think he answers that in a more pragmatic manner than most.

Bloody good lens for what it does, i.e. general purpose, everyday-carry megazoom lens. :niceone:
