A five year old, damaged, deregsitered 250 with 50,000km on the clock, and these idiots bid it up over $2,400?
And yet I see plenty of great gems (600+ as well as LAMS) for under $5,000. WTF is wrong with these people? Why is there even a market for 250's any more?

for someone handy with the spanners that could be a reasonable price for that bike as a road bike or a race bike.

I'll wager $5 and a medium-sized bag of home brand chips that the auction winner bought it to on-sell for a profit. Bunsen burner.

Ah, you'll fit right in, cunt.
Appears the frame is OK for that bike.... I guess that's a gamble the bidders are taking. Would be a good candidate for fixing up for sure.
Buy two bikes, one dropped on the left, one dropped on the right.... voila.
I've seen some fairly cool naked conversions that people mae out of the pre-07 shape after minor bins that broke fairings etc.

Here is a bike with infinitely more character, is less damaged and much more fixable. Sold for $520.
I get that someone probably bought that shitty Ninja to onsell, but after the cost of some sub-standard Chinese fairings, indicators, paint etc you'd be hard pressed to make a buck on it.
I don't understand the bike market sometimes.

Nope not high just caught up by the have to win the auction mentality, some insurance companies now list all there write offs on trade me as they get much higher prices. Half the time with the price some people are willing to pay for a written off bike they have only ever seen in photos, add the repair cost and even repaired substandard level a good second hand bike would be cheaper.

not at all, but if you had spent a little time on the largest NZ motorcycling forum before making an ignorant comment about its value, you would have started to figure out what models are and are not popular, and what a reasonable price range for one might be.

good chance the person bought it to keep too. just because you consider it to have more character doesnt mean that it has higher value.

Good find - I like to keep my eye on bikes that are out of favour, seeking a bargain. That VFR doesn't particularly tickle my fancy, but compared with a $4,000 CBR250 of the same vintage it looks fucking good.
I'm eyeing up a few VTR1000's - I love these bikes purely because they're so unpopular and therefore so cheap. Easily 30% cheaper than a very similar SV, but with a lot more personality IMO.

I agree, $520 for that NV is a bargain even taking the risk as engine not running. Wouldn't take much to tidy up and on sell for a couple of thou.

Sounds like you're a tight bastard who likes cheap/unpopular bikes because they're cheap and unpopular.
Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, but you shouldn't really rag on other peoples taste in bikes just because you don't agree with their justifications.
Step outside your subjective opinion bubble, your preferences and opinion on value don't dictate the market.

That still is way too much money for the bike. After re-registering it and fixing it up, you wouldn't be much better off than buying a road legal one that isn't fucked, and there's also the cost of time to fuck around with it and of course the risk of buying a bike that could have more damage.

Yeah I gave him some rep for that, Nice Sassin'
Not much taste though, the NVs, well I borrowed one in the 90s while my bike was being fixed & had it for a month. I can report they have absolutely no character. Certainly was glad to have it & it was just fine as a bike to ride around on with no vices. I mean if someone offered you a go on theirs you wouldn't even look up.
At the end of the day people will pay what they are prepared to. I'd have to think they can't have done thier sums if they thought they were going to make any money unless they are doing the labour as a charitable entity to return bikes to the road.
and as for the Mantra, well they look as bad in real life. I think I'd rather have a first Multistrada, except they are hideous, maybe I'd rather have the Mantra, no the Multistrada, no Syphilis.

Why is there even a market for 250's any more?
I think a 250 makes a pretty good learner bike, as well as a great commuter/around town bike. May not tick all the items on the rabid litre sports bike riders list, but there are some learner riders who will feel much more comfortable on a lighter bike, maybe they don't do much road riding where there's a need to pass at the open speed limit. I'm thankful I did 20 months on a 250 learner cruiser.

I tend to agree with him, the second hand bike market is out of whack.
People pay good money for sub par bikes, when bigger and better bikes, which are often learner legal, get less.
One thing that makes me laugh is that certain bikes, like Yamaha Scorpios, are sold second hand for the same money you can buy one absolutely new with a warranty.
If you're gonna spend say $4k on some 250 that has seen 50km, and is 15 years old, why dont you spend a little more, and get a new 300cc ninja, or CBR500R, with warranty.
F5 Dave
24th October 2013, 16:19
Thing is, Scorpos are a stain on Yamaha's name if you look at the build quality. I like the concept, but leave one outside & they look like they are reverting to base elements in short order. I guess at that end they make em as cheap as pos.

I see your point, but for alot of people, going the extra 6k, from 4k up to the cost of a new 300 ninja for 10k, isnt just a little extra!
plus, there are an awful lot of people out there who still have no idea about the learner stuff that is now legal. Have spoken to alot of motorcyclists who didnt even know, and as for non riders that are only thinking about it, unless the really look into it, how would they know until/unless they join a forum

Bikini doesn't match her heels and there is no water in sight.
Square bottomed heels don't match the curvature of the bike and are not suited to the gravel surroundings.
Terrible posture.
Knees are disproportionate to the girth of her thighs

Mike is right. only an idiot, or someone with money than brains would spend 2.4k on a deregistered run down 250 ninja. could definitely get a decent one that is registered for 2k. even less if you're in the know. it's expensive to re-register a bike
