View Full Version : My car is possessed

Ok, so, I just went to get a few groceries, then put the car back in the garage, locked the garage and went to unpack the groceries.

Suddenly I hear a car alarm going off. Thought it's my neighbour's first, but then noticed it came from my garage. So go back in, still somehow thinking it must be the neighbour's car as we have adjoining garages. But no, it's my car. The thing is, I don't have a car alarm :shit:.

There is no stickers, no labels and no buttons to set it or to disarm it, no hint at all that there might be an alarm system installed. I don't have a manual, but I've always assumed that if there is no sign of a car alarm, there won't be a car alarm. I've had the car for 2 years and that hasn't happened before.

Thankfully it stopped when I pressed the lock/unlock button of the car keys. Not sure what triggered it. Maybe that I've parked really close to the lawn mower in front, so I have enough room to get the bike out, and that was a trigger point or so.

Do cars nowadays have those hidden alarm systems or is my car just jealous that I don't pay much attention to it anymore since I got into bikes? The car in question is a 2007 Hyundai Accent CRDI. I'll go and have a look at google now, but had to rant first :D

Better possessed than repossessed.

Oh great, it's now about 1.5 hours later and the alarm just went off again. No one went close to the car, since I locked the garage again. :shit:

Hey, I'll have you know it's a great car. Quite a bit of power, great fun to drive and I haven't had any troubles with it yet.

Does the remote have a panic button?
Nah, just one button that locks or unlocks the car.

Good question. I'm keeping all my paper work in the office so will check tomorrow. But I don't think it got changed since I got the car nearly 2 years ago. How long do they usually last?

Leaving the car unlocked for now. Theoretically the alarm should not engage. Another tip I've read about was to just lock the car with the actual key, not the remote. If everything fails, I'm going into the belly of the beast and try to disconnect the battery. Why 30 minutes though?

30 mins with no power will reset the internal computer

buy tech that is 5-20 years old. That way by the time you get it, its cheap as shit and some other bastard has worked out the problems for you.

Reminds me of the time my old car's horn started sounding off for no apparent reason at 5 o'clock in the morning. At first I thought it was the alarm (never really having heard the alarm go off before) so I was blearily pressing the button on the remote which did nothing. In the end I had to sit in it for a couple of hours hitting the steering wheel whenever it came on, turns out it was some kind of fault in the horn button/wiring. True, not really relevant story.

Not sure car alarms are all that useful really - mostly people ignore them when they go off, and if they've gone off isn't it already too late?

Lol, yeah I already had a vision of me being woken up every hour or so by the car alarm. The last two hours have been quiet though, so fingers crossed.

I would have just taken the plug off the horn but I guess some people just like doing things the hard way.

Wouldn't say I like doing things the hard way, it just kinda works out that way...

Will also wipe all the memory from the radio and probarbly reset the security codes. if you have the codes in your manual then no problem.

I have a car that does this alarm thing everytime after driving in the rain. PITA.

Now that sounds really annoying. So you're deconnecting your battery every time when it was raining? Or have you figured out another solution?

I don't have any codes for the car (lol, and couldn't find a manual, yet). No clue if I even should have any.

So, I've now read that trouble with the bonnet switch can make the alarm go off, too. Something about missing rubber pieces and other problems. Now I just have to find out what that thing is.

na all I have to do is lock and unlock the car with the remote several times and it stops. Has done it since new, but the dealers can never find a problem.

Yep, had that with one of our work cars. Usually there is a plunger switch that is pushed in when the bonnet is shut, if it's got water in it or the switch or wiring is grounding somehow then it thinks the bonnet has been opened.

Grashopper
27th October 2013, 16:03
Yeah, looks like there is supposed to be a rubber piece on the bonnet, that pushes on the switch. It's missing on mine, but it looks like that is not totally a new thing. Checked the bonnet this morning and locked the car outside of the office today. Heard nothing so far, so fingers crossed.

That goes without saying. It being Grashopper's garage; therefore it is in her possesion i.e. the garage is possesed by Grashopper.
