View Full Version : Rimutaka Hill Road - Video

Slingshot

Mrs S & I decided that lunch in Martinborough was the order of the day. This gave me the perfect opportunity to test out the new cam set-up on the bike.

This is a short clip heading up the Rimutaka Hill Road (heading north), for those of you that know the road you should recognise this section as the first part of the actual hill road (ie. just after Kaitoke Country Gardens).

The new cam-mount seems to have worked quite well but the sound isn't great so I've put a song clip over the top, this also helps to disguise the false neutral I hit.

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Here's a pic of the mount. I've had a bracket made up that mounts to the frame and the plan was to mount the camera directly to that (without the box). I tried it but there was way too much vibration and the heads on the camera kept jumping.
So I got some perspex for $5 and had a go at making a box, perspex is actually really easy to work with.
Now that the proof of concept has worked I might build a new box, next time I'll try and get it square and maybe a little smaller.

Dammit Slingshot. Now you've gone and shown them just how good the 'takas are - now they'll all be down here....

Truly excellent video.

Can you post a couple more of the later parts. The last overtaking lane on the south side where the front always seems to lift just as you go left-to-right, perhaps?

oh, and we can do without the crazy frog too. ;)

Your film ran out just before what I reckon is the most technical of the corners on the ascent that side. I think I have the lines sussed through those and was hanging on anxiously waiting to see how you did it...

Problem is I got stuck behind that car towing the trailer (that's why I ended the clip).

I'm just capturing the whole tape at the moment and I'll pick out some other sections to post.

All in all it wasn't a great run over the hill (had an arse clenching moment coming down which threw my confidence), I'll get a good run and then get it get it hosted.

The video was taken with a Sony DCR-HC42E camera, it's a fairly standard $1300ish video camera. I've attached a screenshot from the un-compressed AVI file to give you an idea of the actual quality.
From this file I processed it in Windows Movie Maker to a WMV file which was a more manageable size.

As requested, didn't lift but scrapped the pegs (and rooted my left boot).

I've had another look and I'm stuck behind traffic until (and beyond) that tiny little 100m passing lane.
The two clips cover almost all of the southern ascent where I'm not stuck behind traffic.

I've got an old Sharp viewcam which takes good video but is a bit on the large size now. I was thinking about one of these attached to the viewcam http://www.helmetcamera.com.

This is an option as well http://www.pitposse.com/cameramount.html although I'd worry about losing the camera.

I have a feeling LooseBruce has a set-up similar to the helmet cam, they're fairly expensive.

The second link: I'm not so sure that I would trust suction cups, I've seen similar mounts that bolt onto the petrol filler surround which is going to be my next little project.

I've done a helmet cam of the tuka's. Trouble is you lose the lean angles because your head tilts opposite as you are cornering. The sound was totally crap so I overdubbed it with music. One day I'll compress it and put it up for viewing. It will be restricted viewing as my overtaking has a certain flamboyance to it that would corrupt any young viewers

Hmm... I reckon on an old boneshaker it will be the best place 'cos the bracketry is sprung loaded a little ans rubber mounts for the instruments is no sweat. It would be easy to haul off a side fairing and whack it on top of a Cylinder though!

I have a munted nose fairing as well. I could cut a hole in it and stick it in there. PLUS the camera I've 'obtained' has infared night capability... heh heh

Do you use a rubber mat or something under your cam?

I reckon the Guzzler should make a wicked noise for the movie.

So I pull her on to my knee and shove the keyboard out of reach.
Ok so what have I got to entertain her today...
fumblin with the mouse whilst trying to control her wriggling and pawing the monitor (never an easy job).
I find the email with the the movie on so decide to give her a bit of an insight on how daddy goes to work.
I push play and the bike starts to move and the tune begins to play...
"FROG!" says Amberley.
"What?" i asked.
"Frog Frog" Amberley replied.
I had herd her say frog before on a couple of occasions. But why is she saying frog now?
It turns out that she had seen the vid to the song once, a couple of weeks ago.
Totally blown away again! I too had seen the vid once but no way did I associate the tune with a frog on a scooter!

Well ...

Anything you can do I can do.... Um... Not as well as it turns out...

Who would have thought a Moto Guzzi would vibrate that much? The ancient electrical system noised up the video camera and the vibes eventually turned it off! Not a stellar effort BUT we will persist... (until it gets difficult anyway.)

How much of a market would there be for them? If people are really keen, I create and duplicate DVD's as a business. We could have submissions like funniest home videos, assemble a mad disc and sell it for nicks. Could be different sections such as the nads job on XSTV. For the hoot of it of course, not a profit operation.

Paekak hill is the most amazing road on the planet. End. Of. Story. The view from the northern side is amazing, good road surface, not a whole lot of traffic.

Having said that, on a bike, the Rimutakas are probably more fun. Paekak went hard in my old MR2.

Paekak hill is the most amazing road on the planet. End. Of. Story. The view from the northern side is amazing, good road surface, not a whole lot of traffic.

I went on that road on
the very first day after buying (http://www.emanueleziglioli.it/foto/EL250/KapitiCoast/images/pict2832.jpg) my bike, and my wife (gf at the time) on the back. Good training!
It's definitely very narrow, comparing with other major roads. The top also is very exposed and offers no side barriers, and it's very steep!
Beautiful road though, I love the kapiti coast.
Unbelievable that people use it to commute, to avoid the traffic in Mana. Maybe less now that they have upgraded the roundabout and made special one way lanes.

If I manage to convince my wife, we'll take a footage of the Pauatahanui inlet. I ride or drive along it every day. The scenery is amazing, and the curves are fun. The limit is 70kph, and in a couple of corners is quite challenging to keep that speed (where signs suggest 30...)
Something I've noticed is also that when the wind blows, my helmet ends up full of salt... so that I need to wash it every day!

Talking about narrow twisty roads, do you know Airlie road from Plimmerton to SH1? it's a country road and sometimes I find it hard to keep the balance, especially with two people on and if I let the engine go too low.

when i got to the bottom i was a bit directionally embarrassed so turned right, then stopped in paraparam and bought a map. then promptly set off to wellington. In Otaki I got the map out again, turned round and eventually made it home....

he he, it's not that hard, at least when the northerly is blowing (most of the time). Just follow the wind, and save petrol :shifty:

My problem instead is that even if I've been here for 2 years, still I can be distracted and take the wrong side of the road.
That happened last month, I was pissed off because the eftpos at the petrol station wasn't working and rode away while thinking about the shortest way to get to the pak'n'save petrol station. I took the right side of the road quite fast until a car came in front of me and I suddenly realised I was wrong.
I was sure to hit it, but luckily we stopped both one meter before. I couldn't say I'm sorry enough times! There was a child in the front sit and I'm sure it wouldn't have been very nice for them if I had crashed the car windscreen with my helmet. Don't want to think about it too much, it's too easy to do stupid things.

Then I've discovered that at Mobil they turn off the eftpos if they can't see you, e.g. if you have your helmet on. But f**k, that's why I go to an automatic station: not to have to take my helmet off and save time.
At the Pak'n'Save station they then complained that I was putting petrol in the tank without getting off the bike. And I had to explain to the manager that if you don't have a center stand, that's the best way to fill it completely!!
