Hey people, I'm 26 and from Wellington I'm 100% new to bikes and looking to take in as much information as I can about anything bike related.

At the moment I am looking at a used Suzuki VL250 or a Yamaha Virago 250, as I understand V twin is the way to go but what is the better of the two? or what else could be a possibility along that cruiser style?

Any help is hugely appreciated

You're better off starting on a sports bike rather than a cruiser. Sports bikes pull better wheelies, you can learn better throttle control doing wheelies.
Fact.

They're probably similar enough that as used bikes it'll depend more on the specific example as to which is better. Post the TradeMe links if that's where you found them.

The Hyosung GV250 is the same sort of thing and would be worth considering if that's the type of bike you're looking for.

you are aware you are not limited to just 250 machines now? There is a list of bikes with allowed power to weight ratios for learners,LAMS,not sure where you find that list tho!

Never seen a cruiser pop a wheelie before

Won't post up any links as I won't be buying anything until the new year :(, are the Hyosung a good bike for reliability ect

I have looked at a few bigger cc bikes but the price tag is the only reason I'm looking to start with the 250

Is a 650 a good starting point? I thought it might have a bit to much power for a first time rider, I know that extra weight would be nice on the more windy days

If you're going to get something with bugger all power at least get something that goes round corners well.

Welcome to the nuthouse.

May i suggest you pay a visit to any of the bike shops in Welly & have a chat with the bikes sales people. TSS are very approachable for this sort of thing, with no pressure or strings attached.

Have you got your learners yet ? If you do, take a few bikes out for a test ride. You'll be able to experience the different riding positions etc.

Either way, whatever bike you get i'm sure you will love it.

fyi, Here is a list of the LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) bikes : Click me (http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/getting/motorcycles/lams.html)
