Made some changes to the stock r80 I bought as a second bike. It's all reversible as she was very tidy and I wanted to be able to put her back to original if needed. Replaced the bars with wider mx ish ones, stock ones were stupidly narrow . Acewell computer replaces stock instruments , ken Howe in Wellington fabricated a new subframe to fit the aftermarket seat and did everything to a really high standard. Few little things to finish up. :)

That's exactly how this felt with the stock bars, I'm keeping them and all the parts I've swapped out but a doubt they will ever be put back on. ;)

I took a couple more pics too.

Have I said outstanding yet? I have? OK I will say it again - outstanding.

I've looked over hundreds of BMW cafe racers/ customs over the years & I have to say yours rates as one of the best I've seen- very understated & retaining the airbox works better on your bike than some of the half cocked pods & big hole where the airbox should be.

Also I fricking hate mags however yours look great. Did you spray them in matt or satin?

You know that if you did the pinstriping on the tank in gold you could put on a JPS transfer & it would look very cool:cool:

Slight suggestion - could you get rid of the crash bars? They don't do anything & are a bit distracting to the eye.

PS have you posted this over on airheads on Advrider (http://advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=85)? it deserves a bigger audience.

ah very kind padmei, The mags are just sprayed with good quality etch primer (easier to touch up than powder coating , and I was being cheap)
I'm keeping the crash bars for now, easy enough to take off but I'm toying with the idea of mounting extra driving light on them (could be a bit mad max ;) )
yeah I have been meaning to join ADV rider for years ,I just go there to read the ride reports and gleam information, Lots of boxer knowledge over there.
Decided to not fuztz with the airbox as it runs so well stock and everybody that removes them has some sort of issue, and frankly it's never bothered me how it looks.

Cheers!

Great looking bike.

- does it mean I'm getting old when I start liking the look of Beemers, or maybe just more sensible?

Lovely shots Paulo. :2thumbsup

The boys at Boyles also commented on how good it looks the other day as well.

Jeez that Padmei gets around! Been a regular on my build thread over at ADV Rider too.

Ken.

And in a shameless bit of self promotion - anyone who would like a rear subframe, or parts there-of, is welcome to drop me a line;)
(hope you don't mind the slight hijack Paulo)

Bugger you - I had sprayed my mags with a "good quality etch primer" then went & resprayed a gloss top coat to get a sheen like yours but has come out looking like a plastic model - i'll have to respray it with a low quality matt or satin now

Ahhhhh Ken is BO. Not surprising that it looks so good- i'm BO's lil groupie:laugh:

ah I didn't use a gloss top coat , I did spend a lot of time prepping the wheels before spraying though, lots of roughing up with scouring pads and cleaning off using a mix of meths and water diluting by half each time I cleaned them till final clean was just water. The etch primer I bought from Union hardware in Newtown, wasn't cheap but the nozzle on the cans was better than some cheap spray guns, also took my time and did several coats trying to avoid lumps or runs. I have a tendency to be half arsed and rush things but I made myself take my time with this and it paid off. Guess you can always do them again, no harm done. : )

James you would have seen it with the MT90's nice and chunky , handles well on the road but bonus of some grip on the gravel, looking fwd to some summer camping trips out Tora way on the lower east cost of the North Island, can't wait!

You gunna ditch that stupid fairing for your bobber Mr ?

Eddieb
12th May 2014, 21:13
16,000, I think it's only on the 2nd time round so 116,000.

It has a few little quirks and issues. The starter motor has died, it needs a replacement left exhaust pipe as it has 2 right hand pipes fitted, the finish on the headers is shot so they will get wire brushed and heat painted and a few other little odds and ends, I just freed up the clutch tonight as it was sticky after sitting for while.

Gunna stick a Velorex sidecar on the side of it. Probably ditch the fairing but not yet fully decided. The lower section will definately come off. After that it may depend on what width bars and rise I want to run and whether that fits behind the fairing or not, the stock bars are very narrow.

At the moment this is my inspiration, I have the same model chair except mine is all black and has a spoked wheel.

Lovely you could carry a lot of beer or whatnot in that chair, whatever you do don't bin the good bits you remove, one day it will be worth more stock and it's nice to have the option to return it so : )

Sidecars are fun some wide bars will work ok with the tele forks, if you read lots about them they say the frames are not up to it....I call bollocks on that, and mine was a /5 which is the least substantial of the airhead frames. I had a 4 point set up with a VW steering damper.
Sometimes I let Panda drive/ride.

I was going to put a sidecar on my /5, but thought it looked a bit weak, so put it on my Featherbed instead...maybe a frame less suitable.

My car is limited in it's lifespan, so better look at putting a chair on soon, while I've still got a car to transport materials. It'll be a practical chair, not for passengers...unless they want to stand up and work for their ride.

This might've upset some of the old farts at the time. My eldest daughter at 2 months old - 4 years later she'd scream with delight when I was flying the Ural with her in the chair. She'd be asleep after 2 kicks...no seat belts, baby seats, helmets, but my wife is wearing a leather jacket. That's the first production JB sidecar.
