View Full Version : VT250 don't go! Anyone able to help?

I bought a VT250 that wasn't going but supposedly just needed a CDI. I have now tried 2 CDI units that are supposedly good units and still have no spark. My bike mechanic that has checked it out is stumped. Does anyone have the same bike that I can try my CDI units in to confirm that they are working and that the fault is somewhere else in the bike. It is a VT250F2-H 1987 VT Super Sport model (jap import).

These old bikes, aye? I had a 1991 Yamaha Radian 600 that had this similar issue. I also changed the CDI to no avail...
Have you checked the following?
1. Battery (obvious, I know)
2. Battery terminals
3. Electrical earths
4. Kick stand cut-off switch (if the bike has that feature)
5. Start switch block (internally)
6. Fuel tap/filter (may be clogged or blocked)
7. Spark plugs
8. Starter/solenoid

So it kinda points to the stator coil or pulsar coil (both hidden under left hand engine cover in the oil).
A simple multimeter test may, or equally may-not find a problem, needs better test than that.

When you do get it going you'll likely find the cam chain tensioner is poked.

Yeah everything has been checked out. It should go! There does not seem to be a conclusive test to check out the CDI units hence me asking if anyone has the same bike so i can try the CDI units in their bike. If they work in another bike then I definitely have a problem somewhere else.

So to quote myself;

Send stator and pulser to be rewound

He's not listening. You can't possibly be right. They sound like made up words from Star Trek, a la "Flux Capacitor".

Yeah too hard. Try replace the fuse, empty the ash tray and check the tyre pressures, but be sure to use Japanese air.

Should be simple but I must be even more simple. I have replaced the pulse coils and fitted pulse coils from the same engine that I have the good CDI from (even though the previous coils measured 4 volts on winding over the engine) and still no spark. Running out of ideas!!

Had another burst of interest in getting the bike going. Everything on the bike works - pulse coils. ignition coils, spark plugs and leads, kills switch, clutch switch, rev counter, every thing I can think of on the bike has been tested!! The only thing that I can't test is the ignition unit. so has anyone out there got one of these VT250F2 that I can plug my ignition unit into to confirm that it is working?

spend some time googling which other bikes used same cdi....
you will most likely find that there are a few others using same cdi unit....
maybe some on that list will be easier to find...
good luck

side stand switch?

how do you know your coils and spark plugs work if your ignition unit doesnt?

This is a pretty good question.
Are you getting signal/pulse to the coils?
You checking power between kill switch and cdi unit? The kill switch on them only cuts power to the unit, and still cranks.
If all else fails, a VT250 spada unit will be similar, if yours has the 13,500rpm redline.
Agree with the cam tensioner statement too
Take the tensioners out and ream the oil holes out a bit, then clean the fuck out of them.

Connections and continuity!
Check the wiring between your CDI and the Ignition switch, the ignition switch and the kill switch, and the CDI to the Ignition coils!!
