Hey all

As posted in the other thread, I'm organising a ride up North to Wellsford and back on Sunday the 11th September. Seeing as there has been a bit of interest in the ride, here are the confirmed details:

Meeting place: Shell Service Station, Westgate.

Meeting at 9.30am leaving at 10am sharp!

Route: Riding up SH16 to Kumeu, may stop to re-group depending on pace, then on to Helensville where we can stop to re-group again and then onto Wellsford. Once in Wellsford we'll be stopping for lunch/snacks and then heading back via SH1 possibly stopping at Wenderholm Regional Park or Waiwera Thermal Resort and then back into Auckland.

I'm not too sure how long the ride will take but we should be back in Auckland by about 2pm, or 3pm at the lastest.

Judging by the ride interest check, we have about 14 interested people.

Please remember this ride is Slow/medium.

Feel free to bring along a pillion as it will be a cruisy ride.

I'm looking for someone who knows the above route well who is willing to be in the lead and show us the way :) Also any suggestions in regards to stopping points and somewhere to have lunch/snacks in Wellsford are welcome :) Also depending on how many people show up is anyone willing to be the tail rider to make sure we don't loose anyone?

Please remember, ride at your own pace! We might have a few newbies show up and we don't want to see anyone get hurt or bin it.

I will post a map later on today :)

See you all at the ride :ride:

Edit: This ride is weather depending. Sam and I will not be riding if it is raining.

I might go if Mr Gareth D wants to join me (he is my father and all and I can't go without his permission etc.) :motu:

Yeah mate im usually safe as with the cops just ride safe while they are around (or you suspect they might be) the only times ive been pulled over i was being a testosterone charged fiend! :Punk:
But i dont recommend it, the fines when caught tend to be rather large :oi-grr: :oi-grr: :oi-grr:

Just a suggestion,
Maybe you should think about taking old north rd to Helensville.
Not sure if you know it, but its reasonably fast and open. The surface is pretty good and there's no nasty corners. Pretty noob friendly.
I've ridden it around 700 times and I'm still not sick of it.

MMMMMM.... I can remember one incident when one of our Ulysses members rode from Auckland to Taupo for our Remembrance Service, but it was the weekend b4 the actual event

and then there was a guy this week who turned up to a funeral for one of the members a day early and realised he was attending the wrong funeral

Ant and I are planning to take the Oakliegh-Paparoa Rd down to Wellsford. Could add Otaika Valley Rd and Manugakaramea Rd to this if we meet at Maungatapere Service Station (I'll be come from Mangakahia Rd). Should take us less than 1 1/2Hrs to get to Wellsford this way. A lot more fun and way less :Police:

What time do you think you'll arrive @ Wellsford guys?If they are:
Meeting place: Shell Service Station, Westgate.

Meeting at 9.30am leaving at 10am sharp!

Then they should be at Wellsford about 11pm.

If we going via the Oak/Pap Rd we should leave Whangarei by 9.30am (sharp) to get there comfortiabily ahead of them. Going straight to Wellsford we'd be there in an hour. Via Oak/Papa less than an 1 1/2hours.

Caltex Wellsford is the usual join-up place. Can "Kill A Clown" or have a "Long John" for lunch there. There is also a bar and grill and a little Tai place close by.

Sweet :) hopefully you get your bike back soon!

There are two ways you can go on your way back.... actually three.
Once you get to Orewa, turn right and head for the very top of the motorway (BORING), or you could go through Silverdale and get on the motorway there (marginally less BORING)... or you could go through Silverdale and as you leave, just before the motorway turn left onto East Coast Rd... not boring!!!!!
If you do decide to take the motorway, you need to exit at Greville Rd, and join East Coast Rd from there. I live on East coast rd and may join you guys for the McD's bit

Yeah I was thinking about coming down the Rodney District Road, that was the first choice road I'd been on, on a bike in NZ. I'm going to be playing around with a map later on, so that should be good. If you like we can text you on our last stop before we get to the drag thing, and let you know how far away we are.

Once in Wellsford we'll be stopping for lunch/snacks and then heading back via SH1 through Orewa, then down East Coast Road, throught Rodney District, then down East Coast Road until we reach Mairangi Bay, then stopping at 540 East Coast Road for the "Festival of Horsepower".

I'm not too sure how long the ride will take but we should be back in Auckland by about 3pm at the lastest.

Please remember this ride is Slow/medium.

Feel free to bring along a pillion as it will be a cruisy ride.

I'm looking for someone who knows the above route well who is willing to be in the lead and show us the way Also any suggestions in regards to stopping points and somewhere to have lunch/snacks in Wellsford are welcome Also depending on how many people show up is anyone willing to be the tail rider to make sure we don't loose anyone?

Please remember, ride at your own pace! We might have a few newbies show up and we don't want to see anyone get hurt or bin it.

Thats a great idea!! So on the way back down SH1 we can exit near Browns Bay, ride up East Coast Road to the McD's and stop in at that place... then all split our own ways or whatever!

*never been to a drag event*
Sorry to disappoint, but that flyer looks like it's advertising a "Show and tell" session rather than actual races (although they may have some videos going). I think it'll just be a couple of cars outside the McD's house along with that bloke with the red hair and big shoes dancing about and touching up the kiddies :nono:

P.S. If no one else volunteers, I'd be happy to lead the way if you like (if I can get a leave pass from SWMBO ) :ride:

He rides an RG150 (purple one), he's been riding for about 3 months in NZ, but used to ride in India (not sure what or for how long), and he is very keen to join the ride, he even took down the URL for KB and said he might join... he was a bit nervous because he's only on a 150, and I told him that Sam rides like a nana, and she'll be on a 150, and that its a cruisy ride not a race :) So I'm gonna give him more details on the ride next week and he'll confirm next week.

On my Road Cycle (Yes two legs not 4 cylinder power...)

I take a nice ride that starts at westgate, goes through;

Kumeu
Woodhill
Hellensville
Dairyflat

Then hang a right onto coatsville highway, down past Coatsville, Riverhead, and back through Kumeu, to westgate, its just shy of 90km though, so a little short perhaps for an outing of the 4 cylinder kind...

Not hard to extend it to Wellsford though...

If I had my Motorcycling Atlas here, I'd consult it and see what the oracle says. Assuming it says anything at all.

It is a road, with gravelly bits, passing through a veritable pastoral cacophany of cows and sheeps, and the occasional traffic oroficer / voluntary Gubmint revenue agent. Best travelled in inclement weather, otherwise tends to be overly festooned with sprotsbikes and crusiers.

R6_kid
6th September 2005, 15:14
i can 'lead' the way. My pace is medium - fast and i absolutely love that road.

We just have to make sure that a person stops at each major intersection and that we ALL know where we are stopping. I suggest Kaukapakapa gasser then one of the lookouts (same as last time) then wellsford for lunch... from there people can decide where to go.

Since this seems to be turning out to be somewhat of a newbie ride, do you think we should set aside a few minutes at each stop to go through some group riding pointers and useful hand signals? Might even do a bit on safety gear, bring along a tyre pressure guage etc.

As I said before, I'm happy to take the lead if you want.

FWIW, I reckon we should stick with the original plan and go up through Helensville as it's fairly open (not a lot of twisties - those will come after Kaukapakapa) and will give the noobs a feel for group riding before people go balls out. For those who want to go through Old North Rd, fair enough, but it's a bit much for some noobies first group ride.

bugjuice
6th September 2005, 16:08
large groups often benefit from being split into smaller groups, with someone who has a clue leading each. It's then down to those smaller groups if they want to cover any tips/tutoring on that, and to make it to each point. Each leader should also be clear on where they're stopping. Then at each stop, make sure the big-boss-dude knows that they made it there before continuing (to cover breakdowns etc, but I'm not organising this one, so no one will break down).

By splitting, it just makes it easier to arrange and stick together. Doesn't mean each group leaves minutes between, just means when the pace picks up, no one feels they have to race ahead to make sure they aren't left behind.

Those who don't need to be led, are free to go at their pace, as long as they know where they're going. It just helps the newbs, and slower riders, if there's someone there, just for some reassurance.

From the Massey Roundabout, Old North Rd is the Next Right Hand Turn after the Coatsville/Riverhead Turn-off heading to Kumeu on SH16. Turn Right down Old North Rd (as soon as I pass the Caotsville/Riverhead Turn-off, I am usually pulling-over to the centre line and getting ready to turn down Old North as it comes up fairly fast).

At the first stop sign go straight accross so that you stay on Old North Rd. Don't turn off this road. Going right to and end of Old North Rd and turn Right again at the T-intersection onto Peak Rd.

Go to the end of Peak Rd. Turn Right again at the Peak Rd/SH16 T-intersection. This takes you to Kaukapakapa Via SH16.

Stay on SH16 until you get to Wellsford. This should take you around an hour even at a road legal speeds:Punk:

The tutoring thing gets a bit hard. If you want i will give everyone a run down before we head out from shell at westgate. I've organised rides before and not had problems unless people didnt listen *cough*.

At the end of the day lets keep it simple and leave the out of the way routes to another day.

Sweet, well I'm happy to stick to the original plan, I've never riden SH16 or Old North Road. From what I hear Old North Rd has more twisties... but take into consideration there will be a few newbies on the ride, and plus the weather isn't looking the greatest (and no JSG I'm not made of salt... but I could make some comments about balls and riding in city traffic...)

Saturday looks like rain, so Sunday no doubt will be the same. I'm not riding if it's raining, so if any of you are die hard and wanna ride rain and all, then someone else who is willing to lead let me know, and give me your cell number and I'll text you on Sunday morning and let you know.

Meeting place: Shell Service Station, Westgate

Meeting at 9.30am leaving at 10am sharp!

Route: Riding up SH16 to Kumeu, may stop to re-group depending on pace, then on to Helensville where we can stop to re-group again and then onto Wellsford.

Note: Sam and I will not be riding if it's raining

erm... im a bit lost here... i though you wanted to do the the route to wellsford that everyone takes.

Will see which way people want to go, i really enjoy the route through the forest up to kaukapakapa, it doesnt need to be done at pace and is a really nice road to 'cruise' as well as cain along.

If need be i'll take a more adventurous group out that way, its pretty straight forward - only two intersections you need to know where to go otherwise its piss easy.

sorry for double post BUT

my only gripe about going kumeu - helensville is that that road tends to be full of cages sun, rain or snow... and in my experience that kills a ride. i.e it was more fun coming back from muriwhai when we went out that way as all the cages were goin the other way.

dont go changing the route because of me, as i said i will take a group way i know if need be.

Ok I'll tell ya what... as mentioned I don't know the route... and personally don't care either way as I've never riden either of them... at the gas station on Sunday morning, we'll just ask everyone... which way do you wanna go? and then go that way :) If there will be less cages in Old North Rd then that might be the better option anyway :)

16 does have cars on it... so what... its good for the learners to learn to overtake... and deal with cars coming up there arse.... etc etc.

Sorry I Ass-U-Me-d that the Ak'ers were going via Old North Rd not Helensville. The means that, if they leave Westgate by 10am and go via Helensville, they will not get to Wellsford until well after 11:30am (it may even take them longer than that). If Pacidfemme could conform that this is definitely the route they are taking, then the Whangarei lot would only have to leave Maungatapere by 10am (and not 9:30am as I had posted in the above quote).Forget all the above. Aucka's are going via Old North Rd. We'll need to leave no later than 9:45am from Maugatapere (going via Oakleigh/Paparoa Rd) to meet them at Wellsford by 11am. If you're running late, go via SH1 and meet us at Wellsford (and then join the ride back up with Aff and Co.:Punk: )

Bit hard to pick up a bike when I'll be on the ride and don't own any other vehicle apart from my bike.....

Usually a post here asking for anyone who lives/will be in the area or is available and owns a truck will be enough.

It's better to be prepared. Doesn't mean something will happen, just that it is a large ride and the chances of something going wrong is greater since there are new riders and many bikes.

RIGHT - Now I'm getting a bit pissed off at people miss interpreting what I've typed.

When the f*ck did I say it is in every thread??? Read what I've written, if you can't comprehend what was typed - then don't rubbish others comments.

USUALLY on KB a post asking for something results in a positive response to that request.

If Frosty or FF or Dave are busy now would be a good time to find out. If someone else is available then this would be a good time to find out.

There have been instances where someone has binned and all of the above were busy and couldn't come over and pick the bike up - I know this because I was the person calling on behalf of another KB'er. I also know that the people who usually get called have weekend shifts/jobs/ kids to look after, etc, etc.

So isn't it a good idea to see if someone is available??

CHILL PEOPLE... :dodge:

thanks to JSG for bringing it up though - as said Frosty and FF have put their hands up in the past and usually post if they are available to help. There is/was a sticky thread of people that can help in certain areas. If that doesnt work there is a trailer and tie down straps at my house suitable for loading up nearly any bike - just need someones car.

Best thing is to not talk about it and just have a good ride. If it happens then we can sort it out!

Look JSG, a lot of casual rides don't have a trailer to pick you up. Not even on the Use-less-lees WE riders. This is not a big 200+ Biker Rally. Just don't ride silly. If you do go down, I am sure someone will work something out. If you don't feel sercure without a "cage" and trailer following you to pick up the pieces, then please don't come. Otherwise back off PF cause she's doing the best she can.

WOOWOWOWOWOOW - ok this is my last post here --

I thought you Doug would understand what I meant.

I don't want a trailer following anyone :nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono:

I just wanted to know if anyone with a trailer/truck/ute/van/whatever was free if something happened - I don't want anyone following anyone.......

Usually if someone bins it's as Crashe said - we usually sort it out at the time by making a few calls and seeing who can come. What I was trying to do was post here seeing if someone is available so we have their number just in case.... instead of making the calls then and having to make more calls.... which is just more stress in case everyone is busy...anyway no point in preparing now you guys know what to do.

--- apologies to those offended - I've just finished a three day 9am to 5pm work related course on how software testing along with business analysis can save company's time, money and effort and my brain is totally fried - got no idea what I'm saying typing away.........

You guys have fun, I wont be bothering you anymore. Great effort PF - well done.

I'm gonna swing by Barry's Point Road just before 9am, leave just after. Then head up the northern a little, and go the back way round via Massy. This route will take about 20 minutes (I've done it in way less) to Westgate. On the way, we'll swing by the Shell station on the hill of the Upper Harbour Driveway (SH18) (http://www.nzmaps.co.nz/nzmap.php3?p=t&t=bb15&x=40&y=74&w=3&h=3&z=1&f=none) if that's nearer to you than Barry's Point Rd. Hey, I might jsut be able to make this after all.....
I'll be about 1hr north of Wharangei on Sunday morning, so if there are any northland riders going to meet the others in Wellsford, do you mind me riding with ya?
My problem is I wont have any internet access AFTER 9AM SATURDAY MORNING!
So if you would be kind enough to give me a call or a txt to say you're meeting at the big X at Y o'clock that would be awesome!
Otherwise, I'll try to be in Wellsford about 11:00-11:30?

Don't care what way you go, it's all good to me
Cheers to any replies....

Don't mind the showers... just hate the wind...

I've got a cheap little digital camera (the size of a matchbox... as seen on TV) but I only got it yesterday and havn't installed the software on my comp so I dunno if it works or not... but hopefully it does :)

Oh ok sweet :)

Well I had two non-KB biker friends who were meant to be joining the ride... one has pulled out and the other can only confirm tomorrow...

Still looks like a good ride... I told my gran I was organising a ride... and she was like "you should buy some sweets (lollies) and give them to the good riders or riders who do good things" hahaa I told her the "riders" were all adults and wouldn't like sweets haha... my gran rocks!

Event location: Auckland - Auckland City

-------------------------------------------------------------
Meeting place: Shell Service Station, Westgate (Please PM me or text me on 021 130-2670 if you are unsure as to where this is)

Meeting at 9.30am leaving at 10am sharp!

Route: Riding up Old North Road to Wellsford.

Please remember this ride is Slow/medium

Feel free to bring along a pillion as it will be a cruisy ride.

I'm looking for someone who knows the above route well who is willing to be in the lead and show us the way Also any suggestions in regards to stopping points and somewhere to have lunch/snacks in Wellsford are welcome Also depending on how many people show up is anyone willing to be the tail rider to make sure we don't loose anyone?

Please remember, ride at your own pace! We might have a few newbies show up and we don't want to see anyone get hurt or bin it.

NORTH SHORE RIDERS

Bugjuice has offered to meet the North Shore Riders outside Cyclespot on Barry's Pt Road, at 9am sharp, then leading the way to the Shell Service Station.

Faster Riders

Fast Riders, your more than welcome to come along. Aff-Man and a few others have organised a burn from Wellsford further up North. So if you'd like to tag along with us to Wellsford then split with the fast guys your more than welcome to. Details on the faster ride are earlier in this thread and you could PM Aff-man and get some details.

Whangarei & Northland Riders

Whangarei and Northland Riders, a group is leaving from Whangarei to join the group in Wellsford then back to Whangarei, details are earlier in this thread.

Some of the guys I work with are servants of the dark side (off road MX bikers) and they have a club day with the Rodney Motorcycle Club ( http://www.rmcc.co.nz/event.php?id=52&PHPSESSID=c32f51a5f682f51f3402d3ccec9cda7c ). After lunch at Wellsford I'm planning on heading back down SH16, turning left on one of the back roads before Kaukapakapa and going to watch the muck wallowers play around in the dirt for a while. See how the other side live (me, I cant stand getting caked with mud, but there ya go). Feel free to join me if you want, as it could provide some thrills & spills with a wet track.

North Shore lot
I'm gonna swing by Barry's Point Road just before 9am, leave just after. Then head up the northern a little, and go the back way round via Massy. This route will take about 20 minutes (I've done it in way less) to Westgate. On the way, we'll swing by the Shell station on the hill of the Upper Harbour Driveway (SH18) (http://www.nzmaps.co.nz/nzmap.php3?p=t&t=bb15&x=40&y=74&w=3&h=3&z=1&f=none) if that's nearer to you than Barry's Point Rd. It'll most likely be around 9.10.. Then it's an easy cruise to Westgate from there

Will see you at Cyclespot, assuming it isn't pissing down. If it is, I'm staying in bed.
