I thought I would chuck in this section....not to many Mods done yet more just updates and Maintenance, as I find time I will update and do more Mods :)

The dirt bike trailer comes in handy again …. Picking up the bike from Papamoa :D

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/2013-10-18075905.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/2013-10-18075905.jpg.html)

Back at the workshop

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_3872.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_3872.jpg.html)
The saddle bags removed, I will fit them better again but make them removable without going over the seat and make clips to sit in the frame better. I may update them yet but they will do for now.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_3983.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_3983.jpg.html)

Striped the tank, then drained the water and put fresh antifreeze in, New K&N air filter. It was at this point I realized my bike lift is no good so that will be the next project :)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_3898.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_3898.jpg.html)

Jack frame built, I used this as an opportunity to teach a young part time worker to weld so its not anything flash but works a treat
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_3999.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_3999.jpg.html)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_3997.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_3997.jpg.html)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/th_jackvideo.jpg (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/jackvideo.mp4)

Then it was fit the rear bag for the wet weather gear and spare visor and gloves, it is the top bag for a pack so had not frame to supports to hold its shape so a quick frame made, 2 bucket lids and some alloy tread plate sorted that

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_3996.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_3996.jpg.html)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_3995.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_3995.jpg.html)

Next it was the fork springs, fork oil and rear shocks, Badly needed!

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4033.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4033.jpg.html)

Next oil change, oil filter and drive oil change, I didn’t expect that to change much as it wasn’t due to be changed….apparently, and to be fair it looked ok but after the change the bike runs smoother and revs easier…… I don’t know what was in it but the new oil was better :D

The bike still was far from smooth, well it is a V twin….but so is the other bike, I had the factory exhaust for this bike and it has a balance pipe with will ease the “pulse” of each fire by spreading the load over both pipes unlike the pipes on the bike, I like the look of the pipes (apart from they are rusty as well) but I thought I would try the factory pipes to see if it does make a difference, Easy to fit….right?
Well maybe not quite as easy as I thought but got them fitted, fired the bike up and well….. the sound was…..shit! Oh well time to remove the rear baffle to see if that helps

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4083.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4083.jpg.html)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4085.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4085.jpg.html)

The removed baffle

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4086.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4086.jpg.html)

I like the sound with the rear baffles out, less like a 4 cylinder running on two sound and more smoother like a v8...well almost. The big surprise was how much difference it made to the vibes in the bars, I can actually see in the mirrors :2thumbsup

I still have some bits coming for the carbs, brakes and new seat coming so will update as it progresses :)

While I had it up on the stand after doing the exhaust I had a quick go at tidying up the rims... well one side
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4145.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4145.jpg.html)

the other side still looks like it did :P

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4146.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4146.jpg.html)

Will have to find some more time and do the rest.... may black the non polished bits yet... not sure on that.

Nice. I do prefer the that shape of Cruiser. Its good to mod bikes, love the bag idea.

If it were mine I would look at a bigger headlight, looks a little small to me. But thats the fun. It doesnt have to be what others like.

That is on the list to mod.... but I may keep the light but shift up so it tucks under the speedo, will look less like a pimple on the front and give it a longer "chopper" look... Indicators will likely change too... so many ideas so little time ATM, need to finish the maintenance upgrades first then it will be more looks work :)

One side effect to having an older bike that sat with no use for a few years.... the oil seals can get dry/hard

I went for a ride the other night and the rear started to give a little on left corners, Now I am not used to the commander II tires slipping at all so figured something was up.... Yup LH side covered in oil, I am surprised at how little it slipped

A tad oily

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4495.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4495.jpg.html)

the oil was pouring out when I started it for about 30 sec...nice puddle under it. More coming out than when the bike was hot!

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4496.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4496.jpg.html)

The oil seal around the rod but behind that case was the culprit

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4497.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4497.jpg.html)

Got all the bits sorted a day later and back on the road for a F/all coin :D Clocked up 130's and not a drip so ready for the ride I had planned to join Saturday :)

Fitted the heated grips last night but still to fit the controls and wire them up so not sure if they will get as hot as the oxfords yet but they sure look better :D

Lucky you made it home by the looks of that leak.

Bling heat grips too btw, what brand are they?

I have an annoying question too, what sort of car is that on the hoist?

The car is a 39 Mercury... Back with its owner now, They had it sent up from ChCh when they moved up, the shipping company used a fork lift to load it and damaged the sills and guards :weird:

Grips were not very cheap but are solid, quite heavy and they take out quite a lot of vibe, Nice steel cased switch (now mounted but not wired yet, no pic taken yet) throttle side comes with the throttle tube to hook to the cables so std grips are there to go back on if I sell the bike :)

http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/comfort-heated-grips-with-chrome-handlebar-controller-for-honda-cruisers/part/BBP-17-381

Bike still had loads of oil in it but I wouldn't have wanted it to happen on todays or last weekends ride through twisties and around 300 k's each ride

Mate, I feel like punching whoever did that in the face myself. Can't imagine what rainbow of emotions the owner went through.

Cool looking beast though, reminds me of a Willys in some respects (same era I guess).

Anyway, sorry to fill your thread with crap, cheers for the grip link.

You would be spewing at the other one that went wrong...

Chevy wagon getting unloaded of the top deck of a transporter with a forklift....... as they cleared the truck the car rolled of the forklift while still at full height and landed on its roof... a hard to find classic destroyed!

Nice work on the bike this far, looks good and a nice model too. The heated grips are very cool, way better than the oxford units. Those led switches and brake top mount set up is very slick. Can i ask where these are sourced from?? Wouldn't mind a set for my bike.

Good thread, cheers Ando

I found time to fit the new shocks (After the last new ones spat there oil) and Brake backing plate, the plate had a fair amount of surface rust that if kept polished didn’t stand out to much but the rust stains looked a bit rugged if left. Rather than send it away and wait to be re chromed I found a new one that ended up being cheaper than a chrome job anyway :D

The rust bubbles on the old plate

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5241.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5241.jpg.html)

Super easy to swap brake parts

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5208.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5208.jpg.html)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5209.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5209.jpg.html)

I ended up removing the top shock mounts and chucking them in the lathe to take a smidgen off as it was going to be a tight fit for the rubber, So I used the thinnest insert supplied and took the shock mount down until the insert “Just” fitted then fitted the inserts in the shock, makes for easy fit and removal for when I get round to painting the frame :)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5205.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5205.jpg.html)

Insert fitted

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5206.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5206.jpg.html)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5204.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5204.jpg.html)

Back to the old ride height, I did like the look of the 11.5” shocks I put in of my other bike while I waited for the new ones, having the lowered look was good but the change in steering angle I didn’t like on the winding roads, and the exhaust mount bottoming on bumps in the corner I also didn’t like at the lower height.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5215.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5215.jpg.html)
… Now to wait the arrival of the new coils and leads, and a few more Carb bits :P

a couple more bits fitted from the last order that arrived, Steering head nut, washer and engine side plate. cheap as chips for new original parts (nut $10.38, washer $1.94, Plate $19) but they were on special.... Oh and new side cover mounting slot rubbers ($2.13)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5264.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5264.jpg.html)

The old cover had spider corrosion all around the edge and a dent that hardly showed in the pic above

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5257.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5257.jpg.html)

looks much better without a rusty steering head nut

Now I need to be patient while I wait for the coils leads and last of the carb bits to arrive...... Then make a plan for the next mods :P

So I fitted the spots a while back and was going to take some evening pics to show how they light up the road, I have fitted filters to give a relatively flat beam and tilted the spots down so they can be run full time on high or low (to light 15-20 meters ahead for big dip & pot hole spotting) and they have been working very well

The pics, the workshop door is 15 meters away.

Spots only, I should bend the brackets to get a wider flood as the overlap a fair bit.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_5801.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_5801.jpg.html)

High Beam (throws further than the spots but doesn't flood well)

the spots only draw 10 watts each so I haven't had any battery issues at all to date

I thought I better do a bit of an update on this bike, I have done a few updates, I still had an unexplained miss, the coil leads were looking pretty sad and the spark average so new performance coils and leads are fitted to eliminate them from the fault.

Now I still had the electrical miss, and the bike was eating plugs, Pinging as well and no adjustment for timing so Ignition Control module next....

When it finally arrived it did sort the miss :D

Now with some over-night trips coming up (and one of those the mid winter tenting Cold Kiwi) I needed to upgrade my saddle bags, the current ones are not that big and are starting to fall apart, The bags from my 750 are still in mint condition and not needed for the trike build so on they go... Wish it was that easy :P

Indicator shift time, replace the chrome guard mounts, move the sissy bar to give more pillion room and cover the indicator hole and while I am on pilion comfort fit rear floor boards as far forward as I can.

Time for a new tyre, The commander II is a great tyre but with all the water on the road its getting a bit low on tread, I thought I would drop the profile a little to lower the gearing a little as its a pain in the arse at 50-55 mph 2 up (traffic speed this time of year) as its almost to slow for top and not slow enough for third. Summer not such a problem as the traffic on back roads is going quicker, or I just pass them. Not so much fun passing on back roads in the wet out this way, so much dirt on the roads its not funny

Michelin dont do a lower profile but Metzler do, I have gone to a 180/70-15 880 from the 170/80 Commander II

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_6767.jpg

As soon as I get a moment it will be on the bike to see lust how much difference it makes, Definitely lower profiled and that is with a near bald v new tread (880 will be 13mm lower when at the same near worn out stage)

I have kept the Commander II for Summer to get the last out of it...... I think, time will tell.

Hey Leathel that bike is coming along fine, looks good, saddle bag mod was a goodin. Be interesting to see what sort of mileage ya get out of the Metz tyres, I'm currently getting 5-7Kms outta them, just changed mine over to Dunlop's to see if I can get a bit more mileage.

BTW, what are the blue strips on ya helmets, LED's?????

it is reflective tape on the helmet, I put it on for the Blue September ride and it lights up so well at night I left it there...

I got 11000 K's out of the Commander II's + what ever the old owner did on them (he said 2-3000 miles but they were over 1/3 worn) and could probably have done a chunk more if it was summer... they were to worn for the winter

Trial fitted a pack for the Cold Kiwi ride :D

Well I might fit more gear than I thought I would as it is quite a good size.

all these sheets fitted in the pack for the trial fit, still heaps of room in the saddle bags too :D

I finally got around to sorting a mount for the camera on the bike..... Probably keep forgetting to turn it on like on the 750 but its now able to be used :)

Used a scope torch mount and milled a scope ring to fit in the camera guide to attach to the mount, I had to get some longer screws to fit it around the indicator rubber but I am quite happy with the way it works.... just need to test it in daylight now, the video below was taken in half light... just before dark. (the test ride was to test the mount not the camera as I have used that on other bikes)

It is better at showing how good it is if anything with the way it copes with the dark and headlights coming at it. Mind sharing some details? Nice work on the mount too. Is the camera powered off the bike yeah?

The camera is in built battery powered, charges when hooked to the computer and seams to last OK. I have used it on another bike and it used to handle a couple of hours OK, never run it flat.

Its a cheaper camera I got of DX.com when they discounted it.... nothing flash but from memory did 1080....Not sure what its set on and need to find the book to see how to change it, I remember different colour lights on top to the style and quality of recording but cant remember what each means :(

OK so my video mount was too tight for the rubber indicator mount... started parting company, removed the camera and used the Glue I use to fit windscreens to fix the indicator..... Got a Cell phone holder that had a clamp that will work on my 32mm bars..... so got 2 clamps and modded one for the camera

Some footage from the bars

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0l0cM46Fz4&list=UU8_-ELhWys6uuuS9NA9Jygg

(soundtrack is Mark"Fatt Max" Hill)

Just got to watch the speed while mounted there, some movement too but not too bad... the cell bracket should work on a indicator as well as it wont be too tight to squash the rubber, or will fir over the actual hard section

I will take some pics when I get a chance

Adding a couple of updates that didn't find there way here :)

After fitting the LED spots a ways back I have been thinking High Beam could do with more distance... I have been looking for a replacement headlight I like with a deeper dish but most are to $$ or plastic and being this bike has very little of that I want it to stay that way

HID headlight would be a good options but there was doubt in legality for a Warrant of fitness

While in a shop I came across a 100/55 watt headlight bulb, Big difference between high and low isn't a good idea as its like turning the light off on dip but my LED spots flood very well on dip (Fog lens fitted so they can be used on dip) so that wont be an issue (I hope)

Running a high watt bulb will load the switch up and loose brightness and cook the switch so I figured a Relay feed battery source would sort that out :D

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_1200.jpg

shit everywhere ... just to change a bulb

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_1202-1.jpg

Relay tucked in to the frame nicely

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_1204.jpg

cover on hides it all

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_1205.jpg

Power feed from the battery to inline fuse, to the relay, relay activated by the high beam wire that used to headlight that I cut at the plug, power to the light via a heavier wire from the relay .

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_1208.jpg

I have been running with the light setup for a while now and I must say I like the extra punch it has to light up the reflectors well down the road

Pre Thunder beach I did a little tweaking of the carbs... The bike went well on the Hamilton North Special Needs School run and used less fuel than ever before but still had the power :D

I had the bike pretty much ready then Karen mentioned she may not go to the Thunder beach run.... and with Rose as pillion and iffy weather forecast I thought I better get a pack rack fitted to give me more space to fit gear on.

I went a bit old school school for it .... and I also fitted the front floor boards

Well after my starter Died on the way back from New Plymouth (last stop fortunately) and a push start got me home (Thank you Caseye and phreak)

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_9916-1.jpg

After an inspect I ordered new x states, the year later was available in NZ but wrong spline.

Last night I rode it, 100 mile night ride :D

Good to be back on the road after nearly 3 weeks of no road riding :D

New Braided brake line, new brake master, New starter....all good to go, go the shift the bike on the jack, grab the throttle and it slides off!

Fark glad that didn't happen on the road, the heated grip I fitted have the throttle sleeve built in and I assumed it would be one piece...but no, the cable section is glued on

So to get me on the road for my Thursday night ride I put the std one back on and I will look at the heated grip when I get a moment

Some pics... didn't happen unless pics are posted .... right?

Old starter

I broke the gasket when I took the starter gear cover off, Not sure if I will get another of just seal it, wanted to make sure the starter was all good before sealing so is back together.... but it is leaking .... probably just seal as no gasket locally and freight is way dearer than the gasket

WOF time again and the rear rubber was too low

The Commander II was OK but in the cold and wet roads its a bit sketchy until the rubber warms up so I tried a ME880 but that didn't last very long at all....... a little over half the distance the Commander II got but it is better on the wet roads when still cold..... But I would like it to last longer. After some research I decided to try the Pirelli Night Dragon..... Gets a good rep for traction in the wet but not sure it would last any onger than the 880 but I guess I will find out soon :P

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/leathel-one/IMG_4804.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/leathel-one/media/IMG_4804.jpg.html)

the last two tyres I have had fitted, The Commander II is the std size for the bike the smaller is the ME880, I went lower profile to gear the bike down a little.... Interestingly the 880 flattened of more than the C II ?

Today I managed to put 300K's on the new rubber, Looks like its got good traction, I didn't set out to do that distance but I managed to keep skirting around the showers so I kept riding :D

Yeah those ME880 tyres aren't to flash when it comes to longevity. They flatten out through the centre too easily, especially for a cruiser tyre.

I've dumped them in favour of Bridgestone equivalent, better all round for our sled.

I ran the Bridestone Exedra's on the 750, they held in wet OK and wore OK but they followed the road imperfections so I stayed away from them on this bike, ME880,s and CM II have been great for not following Tar edges
