apparently in the more remote parts of the track they set traps to dissable cars/trucks and to make riders fall off bikes so they can rob them

This is truly saddening. I only watched a Kurt ISDE vid the other week and followed his career throughout the years.

Heartbreaking.

Tragic news, especially with his career really going to the next level, contracted to ride the next 3 years with the KTM factory team in the Dakar Series :(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMF3GL455x0&feature=player_embedded

Latest news from KTM Racing is:
Kurt, part of the Factory FMF/Bonanza Plumbing/KTM team competing in this desert race, was in a leading position when he suffered a crash that resulted in severe head trauma. He died of his injuries in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

The team, who have now recovered Kurt's bike discovered traces on the machine that indicate he had collided with some small animal, which apparently caused the crash.

So, booby trap or stupid desert animal? Sad loss, either way.

I'd like to think it was just a freak accident rather than an act of stupidity. As a racer its a risk you actually sign up for. A shame never the less.

News here say they found bits of what looked like animal on the bike so more likely just one of those freak accidents that happens.

We did that (well sort of) ride this year and there are animals everywhere, dogs, horses, cows and even chipmunks.
Hard to spot them running out at you never mind at the speeds they do.

Shane Watts's wife wrote a pretty emtional piece blaming everyone from the comsumers up for the lack of pay in cross country racing and the conditions that lead to Kurt's death,

What a crock of shit. Does she want all races to be held in a closed off area so nobody can watch.

Emotional yes, but wrong.

agree with you, the majority of the field of riders at teh Baja would have payed a shit load of money to be there, and took the risks as well, some are good enough to have their expenses paid, and fewer even make money, but all take the same risks,

RIP kurt

Please don't be to hard on Shane's wife, it's very close to home I would think for her, her worst fear being realised for someone she presumably knew, whib's wife wrote a nice fb piece, alot less emotional but deep in its own way.

There was a series (The Moto Inside The Outdoors) last year that looked at the toll racing dirt (MX) had on families, But still, blaming the fans, what bollocks.
