View Full Version : Yankee chick visiting NZ in early January -- Can I beg, rent, or buy a ride?

Hey Kiwi Adv Bikers! I'm visiting Auckland, Wellington, and Christshurch in early January and apparently every rental place is booked up. :crybaby:
So I'm trying to rent or beg a ride somewhere along the way! I could even escrow the purchase price of a bike and release when it comes back in one piece
Just desperately want to ride while I'm there.
My bonafides: I'm a road marshall for one of the biggest riders groups in the Bay Area, am adventurous but responsible, have put 12k miles on my little BMW F650GS in the past 11 months. I am generous and fun, enjoy just about any kind of riding, from fire roads to twisties in the mountains. I even manage to have fun commuting on the bike.
In a perfect world, I'd love access to one of the BMW GS models, but I will have fun with anything with enough oomph to get up the hills.
Would love any leads or helpful info or even just an invitation to have a beer while I'm there.
Respond here or email alalbaugh@gmail.com and I'll hook you up if you're ever in Northern California! :drinknsin:

I can only assume the question marks on number 3) are implicitly asking where the tit pics are :innocent:

Akzle only dreams about them, even during daylight hours, he's probably taking matters into hand as we speak.

1. I am asking to borrow, rent, or escrow the value of the bike.
2. I am from the US, not sure what the relevance of that fact is
3. ???
4. I've already gotten some nice PM's so thanks for the lucky wishes!
5. No offense, but I could buy a 15 year old Gixxer for what it would cost me to rent a nice BMW GS for a couple weeks.

Thanks for the welcome! It doesn't bother me since I rarely have to listen to cretins. They're normally somewhere in a ditch since everyone knows hooligans can't lean. So this is amusing.

Unless you're sitting around waiting for a circle jerk, I'm not sure what you're hoping for. I've worked in gaming, so it's incredibly hard to faze me and this thread gives me no indication any of the trolls are worthy so far.

Well I hope you have a good trip either way when you get here Alexis.
Yes your right about buying a bike, rentals here are very high priced.
Try and work Hawke's Bay into your intinery, we have a good bunch of riders over this way, we could work something out amongst the lot of us.

If your main problem is the rentals being booked up, you're willing to spend/lose some money and you have enough to buy a bike then why not buy one on arrival and sell it when you leave? It is a fair bit of hassle for two weeks ownership but it's definitely doable.
If you haven't discovered TradeMe (http://www.trademe.co.nz/) yet then have a look on there, it's the primary selling place for used motorcycles in NZ. Get in contact with a seller before you arrive, exchange money for motorcycle shortly after arriving, ride motorcycle, list for sale at $1 reserve (you'll get market value on the day), exchange motorcycle for money, leave NZ.
Failing that, any dealer should be able to give you an indication of what a bike they're selling might be worth to them in a couple of weeks with an extra 2-5000km on it. It'll be a lot less than you what paid for it to start with but as you're aware, renting for 2 weeks is pretty expensive anyway.

You would be pushing your luck on buying one for under 5k ...
but on http://www.nzbike.com/pricing.aspx you are looking at roughly $2730NZD for 21 days hire of a BMW G650GS (2012)
You will also need insurance for it http://www.nzbike.com/insurance.aspx
A security bond equal to the excess is taken by way of credit card authorisation and/or imprint on the day you hire the motorcycle for hires in excess of (7) seven days. For hires under (7) days a hold only is placed on your credit card.
The security bond is released at the end of the hire period providing the motorcycle and accessories are returned undamaged, intact and there has been no damage or loss to any third party. The security bond is also held to cover minor items such as, bike locks, keys & any top-up fuel where the motorcycle is returned with less than a full tank. The owner will release the amount of the bond less any deductions for damage and or additional costs.
This is also only going to happen if you have a licence to ride a bike over here ( it is our way of helping to reduce the helmetless fuckwits that come over & want to piss & moan about having to wear a helmet & gear ) .... Gear ... Wear it .!

This is exactly the kind of info I was seeking, thanks! Yes, I was ready to shell out a couple grand to rent anyway. I figured I'd see if there were any friendly locals who would take my $$ and maybe show me the roads first, but this seems like a workable alternative and I won't have to give out any tit pics.

Good luck with getting a ride to see this country, I was the one that gave you the link to this forum, Im sorry, I wasnt expecting some of the comments that have cropped up, As R650R said, if you can get down to Hawkes Bay, we will certainly sort something out and there is a huge network of back roads in this Provence that we would be happy to show you.

Oops, didn't realise this wasn't in rant & rave, my apologies for earlier comments.
GL with bike finding, and I'd recommend a jaunt round northland or coromandel, bloody nice scenery and a fair few good roads up there.
