Hi.
I'm staying at Tolaga Bay over Christmas and looking for a good location for a one day trail ride. I thought of the Motu River. Has anyone any information on the river, or other suggestions please?

I assume you mean the Motu road? It's a public road, I rode through it this July on my road bike so it isn't a trail ride, yes it's a bit muddy but it's still a public road, there are a few trails off it that require something other than road tyres but I wouldn't spend the time getting there for the small amount of off-road riding they offer. There are mountain bike tracks, don't ride on them, it's a very popular cycling route and all you will achieve is getting your arse kicked and some new people pissed off at motorcyclists. I don't know the area other than that so have no idea what other trails there are in the area, try contacting the Gisborne motorcycle shops for info or look on the Silver Bullet website for organised rides.

we used to access some tracks in the 4x4 in the 90's when we were running rafting trips down the river. They were on the lower river but above the flat stretches on the western side. Not sure how they would be these days.
