Hey all,
Just putting a word out for those wanting to join in on a ride down to the DB1K at the end of Feb 14 for the 1&2 March DB1K. Think of it as a bit of a pre-cursor / a warm up lap / a shake out of skills and gear before heading into to the deeper south to do it for serious.
Pampa and I have bluebridge tickets booked for 8am on Weds 26 Feb, returning at 7pm Mon 3 Mar.
Plan A:
26th: Head thru the Molesworth to Hanmer Springs, then back up thru the Rainbow (if time allows) to overnight in St Arnaud on the first night.
27th: Porika Track, Braeburn Track to Murchison, Maruia Saddle to Springs Junction, Reefton, Greymouth, Arthurs Pass, Fairlie. (Lewis Pass as a back up instead of Arthurs).
28th: Prep & rest in Fairlie, maybe a lazy little ride to Mt Cook park or something, but generally just chilling and working on the bikes, talking shit etc).
1-2 Mar: DB1K
3 Mar: Tarmac back to Picton, possibly via Molesworth.
Plan B: (possibly my preference at the moment)
26th: Head thru the Molesworth to Hanmer Springs, relax in the Springs.
27th: Rainbow Rd, St Arnaud, Porika Track, Braeburn Track to Murchison, Maruia Saddle to Springs Junction (maybe Palmer Rd), Lewis Pass, back to Hanmer, soak it up again.
28th: Hanmer to Fairlie, Rest & Prep.
1-2 Mar: DB1K
3 Mar: Tarmac back to Picton, possibly via Molesworth.
Chicks are welcome of course, (there's a couple of other 'Dusty___' names that come to mind :shifty:)
Accommodation is up to individuals.
I will do up a GPS route file / files for Garmins that I can send out to those interested. Allows some basic navigation practice in before the real route too.
Pablo and I basically want to ride 'efficiently' - ie not racing, but not f*cking around gas bagging and drinking latte's either. Stops rapidly accumulate to large delays on these long rides.
So yeah, post up if you're interested and we can refine the plan a bit.
Cheers, Buggs :msn-wink:

OK, I have had a quick go at creating draft GPS routes. The link to the files in Dropbox is here (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8c2q9m0k8y29l64/0YevNasgOq). It contains Garmin, GPS and KML files. The KML ones will open up in Google Earth. There are also two fly-through tours again using Google Earth (you will need to install it and have a decent broadband connection for it to work). The route from Picton to Hanmer then back up Rainbow, through to Murchison etc is the first two days combined.
Please note the GPS files may not appear right on your GPS as they may not autoroute. They will instead appear as a lot of straight lines between two points. Stick with Google Earth and you will get the idea.
Let me know what you think.
Cheers, Buggs.

Those are good choices, we are planning on that but spread over the way down and way back. Look at Lees valley and the farm access from the North (can't think of the name at present, Matts knows it). Ther's six or seven of us from Auckland heading down the friday and back on the monday & tuesday so we may trip over you in places.

Could be keen to join you guys for the Molesworth etc run, either plan although plan A sounds more interesting haha. Was going to do something similar around that time if a few things happen as planned :niceone:

Looks like I may be down that way around the time you guys are doing this, and could probably easily engineer joining you guys.
Any plans to head up Altimarlok?

Yeah man, easy diversion up there. Its a waypoint on the route that indicates the turn off.

Excellent count me in.
I think Plan B is the better option.
With you guys arriving in Picton at about 11:30am that would make a very large day doing the molesworth and the rainbow. But either way I am keen to join you guys for at least some of it.

Taylors Pass Road could be a more interesting route from Blenheim as well. Not a huge difference timewise.

I think I had us going over Taylor pass on the route I posted? Good fun that little road. It has it all!

Oh sorry, only just had a look at the google earth one before and it looked like SH1 :o My bad.
As you were!
So it looks like plan B will be the goer? Makes sense considering the distances you lot are doing to be fair.
If I make it I might carry on up to Lake Tennyson though and catch you guys on the way past the next day.

Is this still happening?
My plans are almost set in concrete and still have me within the region to join you guys.

Sorry, not for me. I have had to withdraw due to work commitments. Pampa is still going south tho.

Hi mate, I'm still going ... will possible jump over to mainland Thu instead of Wed like originally planned, although haven't changed the ferry yet. When are you going to cross?

Damn, that is a shame.

I tend to leave these things to the last minute so I have not booked any ferry yet (usually do it the night before). So I could head over anytime.
I am leaving Auckland on the 23rd and plan to motocamp my way south, I had initially planned to cross over on the 25/26th (middle of day sailing), and camp near Blenheim and head into the Molesworth the next day. But I can adjust to match your plans. (I am not quite keen enough to head into the Molesworth alone).

Same route or just carry on south from Hamner instead of looping back up?

I had a thought about a simpler route to do.
Thursday Am hit the moleswoth with a trip up Altimarlok. Down into hammer for fuel then up into the rainbow to Mailing pass for the night (camping). This I assume(recall) is the free end of the rainbow and would avoid any toll gates?
Friday down into Fairlie via Lees valley.

Hey Chris what ferry crossing are you on? I'm on the first bluebridge Crossing which arrives at midday. If the timing is right I'll join you for the ride down
