View Full Version : Taumarunui, 4-5 January, NI Round, I dunno, 2 maybe?

well with Tokoroa done & dusted (I'm writing this from the future, but I won't include a spoiler of who won) thoughts now turn to Taumarunui (January 4/5).

More so as I might actually make it to this round.

Its really close to Christmas & NYE, but with a small amount of planning you can turn the Christmas break into a great event with some racing at a fun track & maybe the odd tipple, which is not inconsistent with the time of the year.

Plan now.

It is a great setting, bring kids if you (generic) have to, toilets and kitchen area on site, river down the back, farm next door, town 10 minutes away (watch out for the cops), hospital just out of town on the Forgotten Highway (how do we know this, Hels and Henk?), supermarket in town, great place.

But between then and now (my present not your future) have got Tokeroa and Wanganui. how does Guy Martin go at Wanganui?

If (as has been suggested) Tokoroa is our Christmas party, Taumarunui has to be our New Years bash.

Be great to see him again, it's been a few years (taupo I think).

Maybe a few more of us should bring out the 50s and we might even be able to make a race??

I thought I was flying on the 50 but the lap times didn't show that. Man I was having some fun though. After the problem with the FXRS I thought it was going to be me and the 50 for the day.

Henk
13th December 2013, 13:11
When I was riding the 100 a bit at Mt Wellington I found that riding the 100 made me faster on the 150, got used to higher corner speeds and holding the throttle on longer with a bike that didn't punish you nearly as much if you got it wrong.
F5 bikes are suco much fun I really don't understand why more people don't build them.

Two questions

1. we have enough sidecars to make it worth the effort, how are we off for F5 bikes, not sure if I should throw in a spare F4 or an F5

2. Has anyone got been in touch with the folks down there and got opening up for Friday sorted?

1a GPR one is all go.
1b all the effort went into the sidecar and blown up CDI..... So sorry not any F5 from palmy land.

2. No we were hoping you had?? Can you PM me the contact number and I'll give them a call. We were thinking about heading up first thing Friday.

31st December 2013, 22:30
I would have got in touch but the only contact details I had for Taumarunui was via the kartsport website, and they don't list Taumarunui anymore.
I'll get hold of Seņor Bennett in the coming days and see if he had anything sorted. Worst case take enough water for morning coffee jump the fence and we should be fine.

does anyone want any catnip, as getting tempted to rip a heap of it out, as it is taking over the front "garden". Plants or dried are fine. Henk can bring down to Taumaranui.

Hi guys, the track is all ready for you. The key for the track is ready and in its usual spot. Same place as last year.

I do have a key for the gate as well.

I will be at work until 2pm, but can open up after that if needed.

As normal bring some warm clothes as the morning and evening temp is quite cool. We have plenty of fog this morning.
It was suppose to be thunder and rain yesterday but it turned out a beautiful day with only a small amount of rain at 6pm. So dont take the weather reports too seriously.
Yes you will probably need to bring you own BBQ.

Right, just got the exhaust back on the sidecar and tidied up a few bits and pieces (like the rocking engine that probably broke the exhaust to start with). Haven't fitted the new tires yet, but I might take them with me just in case I get motivated track side. Better plug in and charge my battery pack as we have proven my swinger nearly dies when he has to push it in the start line.

Looked at the solo as well, even changed a broken brake lever. Should be mint.

Plan at the moment is to arrive about 5 or 6pm tomorrow night. Hope there is not to much rain as my tent is not great!

Henk
2nd January 2014, 14:35
Weather should be OK. I'll have a back up start pack to save your swinger if yours dies. You should just put a battery in it you know, that way you'll have poof start when you stall it in the line as well :)

Got to the hospital at 2pm, was at Taumarunui McDee's at 6pm!! Could not believe how many people they called in to look at my elbow joint, each one had to stick their finger in there and go "Does that hurt"?

Finally stuck in some deep stitches and then a second row above, it only hurts a little bit now thankfully, and that was from holding on for grim death as my wife drove us home...

Nee Penn...think stockcars.

No worries team mate, bit piffed I took the pair of us out, seems to be coming a tradition at Taumarunui. One I hope to break.:(

Not sure what will hurt more, double row stitches or the ear bashing you would have likely got on the way home from wifey.... Hope the little ones weren't to shaken up seeing all that.

My racing wasn't great and worthy of my qualifying spot but hey who gives a shit when you are having that much fun. Got to say it was well worth the effort of carting the chair down! Shame we couldn't get in some proper races (especially in the wet on Sunday!).

Cant wait to go back.

Oh and I know there was a conversation at some stage of the weekend about a photo sequence of me on the sweeper back the last time I was at Tamuranui (2008 would you believe!), well I managed to find it.

I got some new wets. Must use them some day.

Just glad we got some dry riding on Saturday. And a dry race which is why I was pushing for one. Very hard track to pass on, but I love riding it.

Thought I was going fast on the 50 but Regan dispelled that thought when he blew past on the straight. Was doing 25.6. Could win on the 50 8 yrs ago if you could get ahead
Things have changed

I still cannot understand how you were getting around the sweeper so fast - I thought I was past you so many times and then there you were in front of me again !!!

My onboard vid would have been heaps better if it showed the wheel I could see out of the corner of my eye.
I'll try post some of my vid's sometime but I need a better computer first, most need a bit of an edit.

That Sweeper is a funny corner, unlike any other I've known.

That sweeper is indeed a funny corner, still haven't got it nailed but I've been building on it for years now and am getting closer. In the dry at least.
I used to not like the track all that much, now I love it.

Had to stand in an awkward place to get out of the rain

Clearly my kids were standing next to you. Loving their commentary -

Son "Daddys going really fast"
Daughter "No he's not"
Son "Yes he is, he's coming second" :2thumbsup
Daughter "Not for long" :(

Two clear identities showing through, the supporter and the realist

Yes, they were entertaining, and both made good spotters for me, as they generally saw the "offs" before I did.

I did accidentally catch your fall too, at about 7min 24 secs you will see yourself dismounting in the background as Scott came down the straight in the foreground. You didn't look to flash as you got off the track, thought you were at the point of passing out.

Mind you, look who is talking, I got to test my helmet also...

Don't think the video of the last B-Grade race will get online, my wife was recording, and even though she saw nothing of the crash due to the trees, the amount of expletives that came out afterwards may make Youtube ban us for life.

Cos I was bundled off in a hurry, I am not sure that GPR got the orange petrol container that was left in the main room? Will ask the others, it was probably 3/4 full from memory.
