there's camping on christmas night in the pits otherwise a few campgrounds round the town, most people are packed up and showered then off to prizegiving and a decent bed boxing night.

I'm taking my brother down, his first time there, and we'll cruise down the previous day. Makes for a long-ish day otherwise and he hasn't seen any of the roads either. Plus, a cruisy start the next day, don't have to worry about your gear or the bike etc.

There is no official event camping site, however there are a few local camping grounds, Aramoho Holiday 10, Castlecliff still has a site I think, and another at Bignell St (again not sure if this is still going either).
I'd go with the Holiday 10 first.......

I've sorted my cruise control and ipod out... yawn... ;-)

Say no, stranger danger...
I think the organisers or local authorities are missing a trick, I've been to many a biking event where the council or local football club etc will give up a playing field for people to camp at and have a right knees up.

luckily i was with someone who knew someone when we went in, got some mighty strong stares when i first went in bein as i was by far the whitest guy in the pub, and that was back in the day when people used to think i was maori:facepalm:

I wouldn't take a bike into Bignell St, Not only is the surounding area a piece of shit but most of the residents at the camp ground are just one step up from homeless.
Crackerheads
Boozers
Thieves.
The Cuzzy has a slkightly better camp but its still not where I would be going, Lots of patches and wannabees nearby.
If I were looking for accomodation in Wanganui....I'd be looking for accomodations somewhere that wasn't in Wanganui.

I take that back, Anndion Lodge is a fine establishment though it has limited capacity.
Watch out for your bikes and cars on the day, The event attracts more then a few cunts that are just there to steal your shit.

A bunch of us stay in Midtown motels, not as cheap as camping but the bikes are a ways from the street & easy walk to the track + you can dump your gear. you'll strugle to book this late though.
They used to hold a concert in some central park a couple of years that night. The Dudes was the best. Pity.

Does anyone know if the local branch of Ulysses are doing the parking again this year? Last year it was off Guyton street. Drop off the bike and gear and get changed $10 for the day.

Ann and Dion from Anndion Lodge are bikers and just plain good people. The accom and service there are top notch. Don't buy all the bullshit about Wanganui being full of thieves, gangs, crackheads etc...Its a great place to live with some fantastic places to check out while you're there. There are stacks of hotels and motels to choose from where your shit will be just fine..............at the same time though....erm....Bignell Street and Castlecliff might want to be on your places to avoid or ride through really fast list.

My bad, In my 30 odd years in Crackanui I must have got the wrong impression.
Im thinking it must have been all the crackheads, theiving shitbags and gangs that deluded me into thinking they were real.

indeed I had a nice older BMW car and someone tried to steal the wheels...a very serious accident nearly ensued

Yep I believe the Ulysses guys are running their lock again this year.
Also the Triumph Owners (T.O.M.C.C.) have their one on Heads Road, just off SH3 in the Farmlands car park, opposite McDonalds.
Same deal $10 for bike lock up and a bag for your gear.

too right headbanger-and its not that they are actually black as to why many refer to these types as 'niggers' but they would clearly fail to understand that.I had an incident in my hometown while out n about on my traily.......Mr gansta in all the glory of his colour's thought he somehow deserved a ride on my bike inspite of not even knowing me.He was quite persistant after my initial decline and v angry once I told him he could walk-then the fight started! (by him) which didn't go in his favour either but lucky for him his 'bro's' released my grip as he started having breathing problems, then straight away out came the knife with two swipes at me before his 'bros' pulled him back and held him to let me go-he still tried to throw a rock at me as I departed though....took me six weeks of persistence before police even took a statement and a year later my injury still has'nt healed properly leaving me with a weak spot-(broke a rib in my back)no joke and Im generally of gd character.......to be fair that dude had been on the beer but I reckon that just making excuses for him-normal people don't behave like this, drunk or otherwise....the savages are def alive and well just as they were when cook and co arrived.

Or... $42 for a nights accommodation in the middle of holiday season. Sounds cheap enough to me and a lot safer than pitching the tent on the side of the road.

Ride safe, and for all those that decided to ride a wee faster than the speed limit ;) remember those that don't when ya heading through the lovely windy roads on the para para's.... or anywhere else! I want to make it down there in one piece ... so give a gal some space when she is behaving on the road!

I wondered why this isn't in the "Why can't people keep left" thread
Have a safe and fun ride.
Weather for Thursday doesn't look good in Wanganui so will have to wait and see if I go. At least I can roll out of bed check the weather and be there 90 minutes later if the forecast is wrong.

Lucky you 90min... weather is hopefully going to be better than last year, and riding in the rain is no issue!;)

It's not the riding in the rain, it's the standing in the rain waiting for races to be restarted after the track is cleared and made safe that I'm not into.
BTW 90 mins is keeping within the tolerance....usually lots of eyes on SH3 that day (wonder why?)
