Cellphone and credit card.....and some cash. You never know when there's going to be an EFTPOS down in the last gas station miles from anywhere and they can't find (don't have) the old machine to do the paper transaction. It's also good for those purchases you don't want the wife to see.

Hi, you dont need that much cash a $50-60 would be fine for gas, theres more then enough bowsers about.
South Island rds have coarse chip = lots of grip even when its wet but very hard on tyres so if your bringing
the FJ make sure they're fairly new. Keep off the shiney shit if you come across & any stay on the coarse, keep
well to the left as we get lots of euros and yanks here that sometimes forget what side of the road they're spose
to on esp after one lane bridges and when exiting rest stops. I usually throttle off when i come across a rest
sign in anticipation.
As said above a good set of wets , enjoy riding our roads that have bugger all traffic.

Cheers for the heads up ,i got new rubber from the previous owner which was a bonus, as for the yanks you can usually hear them before you see them lol.But i mainly started the thread to see what riders take away with them on long runs ,other than a tooth brush and 1 spare pair of underdax what else are people packing?

I'm all for that...as long as it doesn't take up to much space , I've already filled one of my panniers with beer pot and hookers:cool:(thanks Akzle).

I've posted this idea before - Ride and discard
Take old clothes that you were going to throw away or will never wear again. Wear them and dump them as you travel. Day by day your luggage gets lighter. Less washing required and no carrying dirty clothes home with you. I always carry spare gloves. I hate having to put on soaking wet gloves.
Also you will need to pack lots of smiles. Essential kit for riding some of the world's best motorcycling roads.

I just searched for my packing list on the computer but sorry its gone.....
Its quite handy to have a CHECK list, so you can decide whether to take it or not, rather than forget that pair of jandals or phone charger altogether
Anyway, I'll see you down there in Feb, look out for a RED ST1300 with KB sticker on the front

And you left your helmet where?
I would have expected that in 2013, but 30 years ago? Sheesh! Bad Karma...
Worst thing is, you still remember...:) Hope you catch the culprit next time you go there......:msn-wink:

My wife and I left both helmets secured to the helmet lock on the CB400F. Mongrels opened the visor which was facing downwards and stole my gloves, stole my gloves as the song goes....yep got a long memory for bad shit and haha, yes I still looked for them the three times I've been back there but no luck so far:no:

Usually if you ask nicely they have somewhere safe to park. Otherwise park it as close as possible to where you are sleeping so you'll hear if anyone tries anything silly :pinch:.

Find a nice DOC campground away from it all.....Then all you have to listen for is the Kea as they strip your bike of rubber parts.....Therefore buy a really big tent and put the bike inside with you :)

I am a fan of having a roll of tape, cable ties, first aid kit and torch. You will never need them. It's the cheapest insurance I know. Wife and I will be touring down there too, on our GSX650f And XJR1300 at the same time. Tyres and wet weathers are good advise from previous posters Enjoy Oldman Rider

I always carry a $100 note tucked away in my wallet.
Takes care of most situations.

I've got a cheap 12v tyre pump, I've rigged up a cigaret lighter plug for running accesories, I have a puncture repair kit "Stop & Go, Pocket Tyre Plugger", good for warding off the demons that chase the air to the tops of my tyres, This seems to be an easy to use road side puncture repair system.
I also carry a few cable tyes, a roll of elec tape, small torch, and a small first aid kit, because I might need first aid.

That looks alright, except..... Instead of going from Kerr bay straight to Arthurs Pass, hang a right at Inangahua junction and go to Westport then down the coast to Greymouth :woohoo:
Also... fill your tank in Greymouth, Arthurs pass is kinda spendy for gas
