View Full Version : Suburb advice in Auckland?

My girlfriend and I are looking to get a 1-2 bdrm flat together in the city - currently have our eyes on a few places.
We're looking at Te Atatu South, is this a safe suburb? There is a nice looking place there that we like but don't know what the area is like. One specific with this is that we'd have to park the 2nd car about 200m away in a free parking zone on a different street.
A few alternatives are Point Chev or Mt Eden but feel like these would be relatively safe areas to live in - however, they are more expensive.
Any personal experiences or advice would be appreciated. :Punk:

I live not far away from there in glen Eden...it's not bad out here, not sure I would want to park that far away though... Where I am I can still leave my car unlocked in the drive (the bikes get the car port ;-)). We have a downstairs semi self contained flat going if you were interested?

You never know these days - case in point: waiting to turn at the intersection of manukau and greenlane rds in epsom, two expensive looking cars pull up, well dressed guys jump out and start smacking each other around and chasing each other all over the intersection.
Also been burgled twice in Mt Eden; so I guess it depends what your definition of 'safe' is.

I live in Manurewa (weymouth really). I'm 1km from the manukau harbour (440m as the crow flies).
In 8 years we've had 2 stabbings within 5kms of my house.
My folks live in Howick, and they have had 3 murders, several home invasions and one hostage situation in their street in the same amount of time.
Nowhere is safe... and nowhere isnt safe.
Although.. I suspect riding a big black motorcycle, and having a large black loud grumpy dog helps where I live :P

Te Atatu South isn't a bad place. Very close to the motorway (and people have been put off of moving there simply because they have heard "traffic sucks" stories) which is being upgraded, but on a bike it isn't a problem.
The traffic coming down from Foodtown towards the motorway can be major sucky in the mornings, but hey, it's Auckland.
As for parking the car away from the residence?

I grew up in Te Atatu and i feel it's safe enough, but when, my friends from around Auckland came to visit they comment on it being dodgy. I like Te Atatu because it's close to Henderson mall and the motorway. The area around Edmonton road, vodonavich and strid road are okay In my opinion. McLeod road is good because it's close to the Dutch retirement village. It really comes down to the street you live on and your neighbours. Parking the car 200m down the road doesn't seem safe to me wherever you live. Thieves target fancy areas for being fancy.
We've moved to West harbour because my partner was working on the shore and I work in the city so both the motor ways are easily accessible for us and Westgate shopping centre is within the area. The area itself is nice and our street is okay, but I went looking for my cat on the next street over and got harassed by a group of "tough" kids. I look at the condition of the houses around us. If they look after their property they're unlikely to be thugs. Haha you could almost judge the neighbourhood by the state of their berms lol. Good luck with the search!
I agree with Swoop about the motorway comment.

Te Atatu rd is horrible with traffic...and the lanes are quite narrow , not sure how others find it but I often have difficulty lane splitting down it. Tend to use great north or Lincoln rd instead..

I live in one tree hill just off Campbell road and never had trouble. Even forgot to shut the garage one day and nothing got taken. It feels like we are in a retirement village. I work in new market and my partner works at auckland hospital. Takes us no more then 15 mins to get to work no matter what traffic. In saying that its not the cheapest to live. But it works for us got a garage for the ninja so I'm happy

auckland is some fucking gay shit. move out of it as soon as possible, before the akzlepocalypse.
also, giz your missus, then you only have to look for one room.
depends what you're into.
if it's crates of bushmans draught, failed middle-classers, marajuana, and HK series holdens, go for te-ats.
if you like coffee with stupid fucking names, paying 30% more for everything and low grade overpriced ecstasy, go with mt eden.
if you're a student bum who's sort of into 'chic' shit, bongs for lunch, bit of meth or eccy on the weekends, go pt chev.
so i guess pt chev is where i'd recommend if you had to be in auckland. of course, if you're driving a fucking car into town at rush hour times, you're fucked anyway and you should hang yourself for the good of the nation.
