Nothing disturbs your Saturday evening gardening more than finding a huge freaking bone in your garden.

Any idea what/who (ARGH!) this could be from?

...something that is missing a limb...it should be quite readily spotted, being that big and all...probably moaning a lot and leaving a trail...

It's been there at least for 4 years, so that trail is probably cold...

No, but the garden is open to the road. There used to be a lot of bushes that got cleared up mostly when I moved in, but there is this elevated garden terrace thing where it was have way underneath. There is still leaves and stuff there from before I moved in.

No bite marks on the bone. Doesn't look like a dog left it there.

Maui's whalebone maybe... If it is be sure to toss it before one tribe or another tries to claim your garden.

Corrected :p. I hope to be the kind of man that lives in such a way he casually pops giant roast bones over the odd fence. One day....

Process of elimination.

Does this beef look familiar?

Dead cow's leg?

The cow may not be dead, it could just have a slight limp now, or walking in circles?

Take it to the vet or butchers for identification.

... and keep digging

I've thought about the butcher, but pretty sure it wouldn't be the most food-hygienic thing to drag it into butcher's shop. Hm, maybe I'll call up a vet and see if they are ok to look at it.

At the moment it is still lying there. Didn't want to move it or throw it away, just in case. Went to the police the other day to at least report it and they said 9 out of 10 times it is sheep or cow and to come back when I find the skull, lol

Thinking about digging a bit more is creeping me out on one hand, but on the other I want to do it anyway. lol Will see

found this a few years ago - though it was an animal but my partner made me show the police. They had a look at the pics and made me come back and hour or so later. Had someone look at it and said it was a deer and not to worry.

The next day i got a call and had to tell them where it was. Couldn't explain it so met them at the river. 2 turned up in a 4wd and a detective car. Took them at a river and it looked so animal like it was embarresing. They thanked me anyway and said the would rather look and check thing like this out just in case. They still took it away for testing tho

I remember finding a skull while walking along the railway tracks at the end of our road. ( Definitely animal, not human). It took me a while to figure out it was the remains of a pig's head that looked like it had been chucked over the back fence. It was still pretty gross.

Most probably came from the Mad Butcher.
Saw you a couple of weeks ago when I was down in Taupo Grasshopper. Red Spada speeding down the main drag in and out of traffic, hahaha

for comparison this is a Fallow leg bone, red deer is bigger but not as thick as the one you found

I would put money and the one in your garden being cow, to short for horse :)

Now finding that would have really freaked me out. Sounds like the police took that one a bit more serious, too. I still haven't heard back from them, but will just leave the bone there for the time being.

I find that gross too, but I remember that we found a sheep skull when we were kids, and some of my friends found it so interesting that they took it home...
Finding a skull makes things easier though. At least you know it is from an animal...or not... But can you imagine finding a human skull??? Argh

Hehe, yeah I'm strongly hoping it comes from an (animal) butcher. lol
Haha, wonder when that was. Can't remember seeing a Busa in town. But yes, I'm the only one in town with such a good taste in bikes, so it was probably me on my Spada, lol.

Hm, looks a bit similar, but not exactly like it and I was thinking along the same lines about horses so yeah, cow is my best bet too.
