Ive just found out about "Glympse". Im meeting up with an Adv Rider from Welly Today who is going up Route 52 to Porangahau where we will meet there and from there we will head up to Hastings via back roads. Chris is then heading over to Taihape then up to Turangi. I will try and post the link from facebook so you can see how it works. http://glympse.com/0CHH-YNPP
It will only work if you are carrying a Smart Phone which is GPS Capable. Just activate it when you leave and anyone can click on the link and follow you.

yes. please charge your phones overnight and keep them on you, with GPS enabled at all times. it makes the gcsb's job so much easier when you become 'undesirable'

There is a function on there that also shows your speed. I'd recommend disabling that if you are going to use this. Chris has...;)

This GPS software for phones should you want it or rate it better than others....

I find the maps and information good, but the structure and how to find and configure awful! Give me a Garmin any day and the phone stays a phone...

Wasn't aware that you need to be in cell coverage for Glympse to work fully, but its based on Google maps so web based. I was able to track Chris today very clearly until he lost coveridge but was still able to see his ETA time and it proved to be very close. Funny watching an arrow moving along a road realizing its someone on a bike. We had a good ride up the coast to Hastings taking in some shingle roads and about 10 km on the beach. That wasn't planned but saw it was low tide so made the most of it. Glympse then showed that he had arrived safely in Turangi so for what it does, its awesome.

That's good then....Kind of like a cheaper version of what the Government can do then...:)
Mind you, they ain't interested in ADV riders unless you perch yourself on top of Altimarloch with a zoom lens aimed at Waihopai...:sherlock:

I've built a group map on AdventureRidingNZ.co.nz where everyone who joins the group should show up on the same map.

You don't need GPS to be tracked. Triangulation between towers and network / pattern analysis of contacts is adequate. I have a spare colander you can use as a helmet if you need. It will assist with ensuring the privacy of your thoughts.

its trilateration, for a start. And yes, its possible and gettin better all the time. Particularly in tower dense areas.
I live 20km from the nearest cell tower and often go through the one 35km on the other side of the harbour.
Good luck telco.

Emphasis was more on the colander bit than the technoguff. Happy riding!

The GCSB is welcome to track me. They'll find I live a fairly boring life at present.

Funnily enough, this is one of those topics that comes to mind when I set out on a solo road trip. Shock horror, this might be the motivation I need to upgrade to a smartphone...
