Calling all shady cunts,

Has anyone stood up on their pegs and put a foot over the plate and successfully got away with not paying the toll on the Northern Gateway Toll Road?

Maybe a wheelie? But you should't be doing them on the street because thats Illegal!!

I still got the toll last week even with my angled mount I made. $2.20 is a bit steep, thats almost a litre of 98.

Just curious (don't live there, don't know what it looks like or how it works) - but what's the deal with this "plate" ? What is it doing and what's the foot on it achieving?

The Northern Gateway toll takes a photo of your number plate, so if you dont pay the toll in week or so penalties add up. Its all electronic, create an account on line for x amount of vehicles or pay at a kiosk at Dairy Flat BP on the way north or the one on the way south. If you are that opposed to it just go through Orewa for free and set off all the oldies car alarms. Or go out West and up SH16 for free....

In the CBR1000 I had the plate mounted under the exhaust (undertail) and never got snapped, on the Superduke I could flick my foot around or lean back and cover with my free hand and never got snapped.

For me it worked. Now I don't bother and submit to the fee.

Just put dirt on the plate. Also new NZ plates have horrible silver fern that fucks with ANPR engines.

Oppps I mean "I know nothing".
(ANPR is 80% successful at best at recognizing a plate.....so will let you do the math).

Yeah i got stung because I forgot to pay the bloody thing in time. $5 admin fee, for what, sitting on their asses doing f'all! I paid it. Luckily (for myself) I paid the return trip in time. But I mean for those heading up north where there is NO cellular coverage AT ALL how the **** is one supposed to pay the bloody thing! (yes you could hope off ya bike and pay it on the side of the road or pull over for a coffee...or some chips. All other times I've gone around (probably using more gas and therefore costing me more) and had I not been with a group I'd have gone around that time as well.

/rant over

but for the OP's sake, one of the other guy's had his plate so far forward and bent halfway to the ground the camera didn't snap a picture and so he got away without payment (the lucky bugga). so for future reference BEFORE entering the tunnel simply remove said plate, after exiting tunnel re-attach plate and giggle all the way for the rest of your trip

The only way around it is to clone someone elses number plate from same make and model, very naughty tho!!!! its what happened with the London congestion charging.
Bit harder with metal plates tho...
Kinda amuses me the idea of people going to great lengths and risking big fines by not paying such a small fee...

It's really not something one thinks about before going on a trip and it wasn't decided if we were going through it or not

Hahaha, my old man has his front plate on a piano hinge, so it folds itself up at a certain speed:D

His piano had a front plate?

Used the tunnel when it was free, never since we had to pay. My little protest against paying as much as cars, so I always use the free route. It's really not that much slower, a matter of minutes, but depends whether you get caught behind a snail.

The piano was Grandads, now its my wifes. Dad can't play the piano.......

The free route has some of the better corners to be had within a short pootle from Auckland. I've been known to stop, turn around and do the hills either side of Waiwera again before proceeding on.

Why would you want to use the boring straight pay road on a motorcycle?
Free road: free, good corners, views, Orewa ice cream, no speed cameras...

On my car I just use a copy of John Key's number plate. Never had a problem.

I use to live in an area that had tolls where you were charged in the mail after it took a picture of your plates on the entrance and exit. Well apparently if you were doing 200kph+ the camera couldn't take the picture or maybe it was not readable anymore. :scooter:

Came through there a couple of days ago and was thinking....what if you just took the plate off and then put it back on after the tunnel?
Have some sort of quick release wing nuts or sommit...:)
Or obscured with the enormous amount of luggage some of us take away for a dirty weekend...

Up in these parts if the plate is obstructed or not readable you can get a ticket. Some dudes have flip plates, plate covers that frost over when a switch is hit...... but they are all illegal and folks have been busted.

Hahaha, that was great. Was loaded up with too much luggage so much plate got squished back when it contacted with the rear tire.
