View Full Version : So much for the rego on hold bit - soon

Big Dave

Was just doing a bit of research and hit this - and thought of the KB heroes. Coming soon to a NZ near you.

Mobile Automatic Number Plate Recognition (MANPR) units that can scan six licence plates a second are fitted to 75 patrol cars. They have caught 20,841 unregistered vehicles so far this financial year.
All 172 fixed speed cameras, six mobile speed cameras, 17 bus lane cameras, 183 red light cameras (gradually being replaced by safety cameras at 200 locations), 26 transit lane cameras and 21 sets of point-to-point cameras now check registration details.

this *should* lead to an increase in police shot/stabbed.
unfortunately, probably only leads to more $$ for teh govt. and if any cops do get shot/stabbed, they're gonna give them guns on the hip

Just hypothetically speaking, your number plate was partially obscured by a loose WOF label?
Your bike is not detected, you get no mail.
You may get stopped and ticketed but you could probably thank them for pointing it out and get away with it.
Just say'n.

Until they did the rego check - which would have been done by the time you reach for the brake. Then it's more likely you bend over for the full monty.

Use the font that you used to make the "smokeu" graphic at the bottom of your post and make a fake plate. Get a live number from a cop bike - that should be registered and warranted.

You live in the Riviera of the south... stay there.

Couple of nights ago shouted at a some women after following her for several kilometres with an interesting lap (well, she must have thought so because she kept looking at it). Nose to tail near miss, almost cleaned out a cyclist, constantly accelerating and braking and deviating from her lane. Pulled up along side at a traffic light to see her slowing to a stop looking at her mobile (no surprises) and shouted at her to stop using her mobile while driving, her driving was absolutely shocking and stop using your mobile while driving. She just sat there looking in somewhat disbelief at me shouting at her.

One can only hope she got the message, but man, did I wish I was a cop at that point...

Oh, and late-ish this evening, a car blew a red traffic light in downtown Auckland. Not even running a red, another traffic phase had already been and we were about to go. Just... well, no fricken idea what they were thinking.

Stay south, you might live longer...

I will occasionally run my bike ( or car ) untill the next pay with an expired rego, and if I get nabbed, then have no one to blame but me. If someone is using a vehicle knowing the rego is on hold etc, and gets pinged, then I dont have much sympathy for them.

If your rego is not on hold but simply overdue....bearing in mind they allow 2 months grace to put on hold.....what is the actual offense called if caught with wof but overdue rego?? Failure to display ?? With rego 'compulsory' it is hard to think what other offense could possibly be

Odd, the ANPR car I operate isn't programmed to detect expired registrations.

It is programmed to detect those on hold, and those which have lapsed, but not expired regos.

By the logic on here, I guess that means it's not about revenue collecting, because if it was, we'd be pinging every expired rego sticker.

Just to add some balance.

Operated An Unlicensed Motor Vehicle.

Operating an unregistered vehicle is a different offence, the fine is $150. And 20 demerits.

Just operating an unlicensed vehicle, the fine is $100. And 15 demerits.

Driving a vehicle with the reg on hold costs $150 and has 20 demerits. Same as being unregistered.

Whats the fine for reg on hold but demonstrating you have the correct paid up ACC cover for the class of vehicle.

Guessing you already know the answer but here it is anyway. The roadside popo wont care about your political views regarding ACC levies. The system that exists has certain processes and those are the only ones that are enforced.

You're welcome to have your views, but don't expect them to count for much.

Jusy saying it how it is. I respect your views. Might even agree. But that's how it is.

But from a couple decades ago it became almost impossible to "Operate an unlicensed vehicle" meaning the cops are straight up illegally extorting money using an outdated redundant legislation.
There are very few vehicles where this legislation could still apply

The whole problem with the compliance system is that it encourages folk to not worry about complying as when they get caught, they just go and do it, and get off the fine.

So, to be cynical about it, in a strange way the compliance system encourages law avoidance.

For the record, if the fine gets canned, that means the ticket gets cancelled, and the demerits go as well i.e. if the ticket dies, so do the points.

It's the same problem with my training incentive scheme. Down here I offer to cancel someones ticket if they do one of the rideforever.co.nz training courses.

So the cynical just continue to break the rules, as my scheme gives them a get out of jail free card. Well, not quite free, they have to go do a riding course, so I've had a win anyway.

Yeah, the compliance thing is a double edged sword.

From the website......

http://www.police.govt.nz/faq/what-traffic-compliance-and-how-do-i-get-it

Folk often overlook the important point that once you've had a ticket for something, doesn't mean you can't get another ticket for the same thing if you keep using vehicle. A rocket scientist in Nelson just found that out.

It's quite funny when we stop, for e.g., a young fella driving a car with a big crack across the screen. He might produce a ticket, complaining that it's not fair, coz he got a ticket for that yesterday. Slow learners.

I too am amazed this system still exsists:yes:...as I find it can also benefit those who are financially disadvantaged at the time! (eg, can't afford the rediculasly huge rego fees)...VERY odd in these times indeed<_<

But I was just refering to rego (sorry...lets call just call it ACC,BS,TAX...to be clear)...not parking tickets, and certainly NOT using unwarrented & dangerous vehicals.

Anyhow, he was entirely pleasant and apologetic to the officer who turned around and pursued him. The rego was on hold, which must have been revealed when the check was done. No mention was made of this, just a $150 ticket.

Perhaps manners and respect go a long way for when one gets pulled over?
