G'day
Any inside running on a bigger tank and or luggage options for a 2006 450 EXC - just spent money on losing weight (going to sell the KLR) and now I am trying to spend some on putting it back on! DOH!
Any experience on lead times, prices and who to get the tank / luggage off really appreciated
Thanks

Hey Crim, welcome to the Orange side.
You've got a couple of options for larger tanks, OEM KTM one will be 13L, there is a Clark tanks (Australia) 15L or an Acerbis behemoth around 6.5 US gallon (25L)
Try Ebay USA as a start point to look at tank shape and prices. Expect around $75-$100 USD for shipping. I'd recommend looking a Just Tanks website in USA too, they also have a couple of options.
At the moment the Aussie based ones might be your better option due much better exchange rate. Have a look on TradeMe as well, you might get lucky like me and get one here.

As far as luggage goes, I love the Wolfman soft luggage, it packs down snugly and is ultra well constructed. A lot of guys use Giant Loop for distance travel, over seat style, but fairly bulky. Bear in mind, the biggest factor is having gear bounce off the bike in the rough stuff, so panniers etc need to be really secure. I got my Wolfman stuff from USA in about a week after ordering.

Have a quick look at this thread on 525 EXC (essentially same as your 450) for a few clues on what other EXC owners are doing. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/129672-Abuse-proofing-a-525

Oh, and seriously look at a seat upgrade.

:wacko:Hi C F interested to see your comments re luggage & your RR on ADVrider , am trying to find decent bags for my TTR , being the bike is quite short so anything impingeing on seat space is a pain . Any chance of me having a look at them some time . Txt 0272 486 511 Ta.

This is the tank I have on my 2011 530 EXC:

http://www.safaritanks.com.au/home/9-KTM/51-KTM-EXC-2008-2011-15-litre/flypage.tpl.html

They have one for your bike also..

I have found that I always get about 17 liters when bone dry...fyi....although they advertise 15 fyi..

It's expensive but, works!

Funny that I also have a KLR and are going to start using the 530 for the more Adventurous stuff~~~

Good Luck

got the 6.6 g Acerbis on the way from good old US of A :woohoo:, luggage might try to just make something up out of old cycle saddlebags for now - giant loop coyote look the schnizz (if that is what teenagers are saying these days), seat - might head into a local upholsterer and see what they can do

Gidday Crim, Congrats on the new bike. Nice choice, thankfully I am not doing the DB this year cause I don't think I would be able to keep up with ya!! If you plan on a ride out this way let me know, cheers,

For an extra 3 litres...:)
I bet there a few that have tried this and....
1. cannot get the seat to fit.
2. when they take the tank off for work, cannot get it to fit right again?
Nice trick though, I would rather carry a bladder of some sort for that extra 3 litres...or 5...

Now that I am a KTM owner - I seem to spend money, Panniers for the KLR about $20 all up and a bit of kiwi india nudity, I have splashed out and got the Giant Loop Coyote - great bit of kit and fits sweet as bro - but more than 20 times the price
Big tank hasn't arrived yet - but I will soon be ready to tackle the DB1k :woohoo:, got the neurosurgeon on Tuesday for my six monthly check on the old back op so will be annoyed if he stops me in my tracks

Took her out for a spin today - it makes the KLR seem like a touring bike on the road  but very confidence inspiring on gravel / light off road stuff - and that is with road tyres/sprocket on :wings: - will wait till I talk to the doc before getting too gnarly - but really looking forward to it!

Took her for a spin through Lees valley in the weekend - O for Awesome - but ran out of gas at 124 klm so have now ordered;

Big Tank - still to arrive
Big Loop Coyote - great bit of kit
Rox Risers - anti vibe 2 1/4 - still to arrive
Air Hawk arse saver - still to arrive

Take my credit card off me!!!

Hmmm, 124 km to stock 9L tank, yep that's about right when riding in a spirited fashion. Technical trail riding is worse. I'll get 15.5km/litre if riding sensibly.
I got the 13L KTM for my 525, good for around 175km, plus have an auxillary rear tank of 5L which I'll fit up for long trips.

Yep, accessorising is an expensive pastime. Fun shopping but.

Yep - real good fun, although not looking forward to the credit card bill :( (or the reaction when the minister of finance sees it) - that will all be forgotten as I am hurtling along some trail on the DB with a grin a mile wide

no - still recovering from the old back surgery so am planning to van down and do "half or easy days"probably start in Waimate on day 1 and go straight to Omarama saddle on the Sunday morning - see what happens and how the old hammer and tack stands up.
If I do van down - I'll give you a yell if you want any gear taken down - might make the old Friday run a bit more enjoyable for ya!

Hey there Crim, was wondering if you could give me the low down on your 450 in terms of how you have set it up for adventure riding. Have a few questions for ya:

Whats the gearing like for open road use?
What sort of service intervals are you doing - oil & filters, valve checks
What seat are you using
Have you or are you intending to fit a cush drive rear wheel on it
Is it very "viby" at 110-120klm on the road
Are you using stock sprockets
Have you added any wind protection to it

am looking at all options for another bike so any comments gratefully received

cheers

Hey there NF,
I am probably not the best person to talk to, have only just got her and not done bugger all klms on it yet - it is vibey but that is down to the rim locks I reckon, the seat I have just strapped a Airhawk on (but haven't tried it) - do have anti vibe bar raisers on so thinking that may help - got the massive Acerbis tank but that is still in bubble wrap in the garage (only turned up yesterday) - to be totally honest I am riding her as I got her and will make changes when I can
Cheers

it helps to balance your wheels, as for gearing i run 13-50 as id rather have better control in the steep and rugged, its a dirt bike not road bike, and your are doing around 700ks off road, u could carry a bigger front sprocket, if u are riding hard, an oil change in alex won't hurt, also check your cluch fluid,

Big tank didn't turn up in time, but as far as the rest go;
Rox anti vibe risers - Awesome
Airhawk - good a world of difference - new seat would be better but can move this to anybike
Giant Loop Coyote - Awesome

My riding partner this year was on a 450 exc with standard tank and a 5 litre can strapped on the back. Got through with no problems, although had to fill at Moa creek. Thanks Struan. Although may have just made it to Oterahau?

Seat was an issue on the long road sections though. was funny watching a group of EXC riders 5 minutes into the road section on Sunday doing some weird dances as they rode along. Might be the next dance craze. The EXC shuffle.

I hear ya, the stock seat is a killer :eek5: - the EXC shuffle go something like - left cheek, right cheek, middle, stand and repeat often?
I did miss the old girl on the highway with the couch seat, lack of rim locks and the heated grips!

I did miss the old girl on the highway with the couch seat, lack of rim locks and the heated grips! I sent my 625SXC seat to McDonald Trimmers at Tauranga to be lowered as much as possible and made comfortable. They did my Transalp seat previously. The SXC with the modified seat was as comfortable as for the two days of the DB just starting to feel it a bit on the home stretch after Black Forest. I usually wear a pair of padded bum bike shorts for multi day rides but forgot to pack them  but as it turned out didn't need them fortunately. Highly recommend McDonald Trimmers. Excellent to deal with and excellent product. Cheers.
